Nokia 9 Pureview $524.25 @ JB Hi-Fi (Limited Stock)

120

Best I've seen was $699, been watching this handy for a while. Might be the right time to strike! My closest store didn't have but the one down the road had 4 units.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2019

Such a shame, instead of putting 5 cameras this should have a very large single sensor low MP count (say a full 1" 12-16MP). That would make it much easier to polish software processing side of it and yield exceptional photo quality.

    • How would they fit a lens for a 1" sensor in a device the thickness of a phone?

      • How would they not? Xiaomi fits a 1/1.33" sensor which equates to around 0.75" and a bunch of other sensors on the Redmi Note 10, and the phone isn't thick. The lens is not that thick. Won't surprised at this rate in 2021 we get 1" phone camera sensors.

        • I dont know, there is a pretty big jump between 1/1.33 and a straight 1" sensor. The former being only ~60% the size of the later.

        • OK I should have said, how would they fit a good lens for a 1" sensor in a device the thickness of a phone? It's possible to make a lens that works, but making a lens to produce a sharp imaging circle over a large area with a very short back focal distance isn't the easiest thing to do. Not surprisingly, DxOMark had this to say about the Xiaomi CC9 Pro (with the same size 1/1.33 sensor):

Images from the Mi CC9 Pro Premium Edition showed more artifacts than our other top-scoring phones, which is likely due to using a large, ultra-high-resolution sensor. In particular, along with some geometric distortion, there is a noticeable falloff in sharpness towards the edges of images, as you can see in the following example:

Then, looking at the hordes of people showing disappointment that the Pixel 4 didn't have an ultrawide camera when all the other flagships do, there'll be plenty of people who'll say Nokia shouldn't have gone with a 1" sensor and instead gone with a 3-camera setup. :)

          • @eug: You haven't read that DXOmark sentence clearly, do you? The downfall to Note 10 Pro is ultra high resolution. 27MP Quad Bayer is still too much for the SoC to process, hence artifacts. Nowhere did they say anything about LENS.

            • @Bigboomboom:

Nowhere did they say anything about LENS.

It looks like you're unaware as to what causes geometric distortion and a falloff in sharpness in the edges.

              It's the lens.

              • @eug: Yes and no. It's also the image processing as well, as there are more pixels to process. This is also just the first of many 1/1.33" phone, more like a prototype. Starts with S11 they will get refined as time goes on. Won't surprised by 2021 we gets closer to 1" sensor size.

Also Nokia Preview 808 has 1/1.2" or 0.83" sensor and does not suffer like Xiaomi.

You can use processing to reduce lens distortion, which is the exact problem I was talking about - it isn't easy to make a good lens in that form factor. Software correction sticks to the garbage in garbage out principle - if your lens isn't good, software can only do so much.

With sharpness falloff on the other hand, there isn't much that software processing can do. You cannot sharpen detail that is not there. Once again, you need a good lens to avoid sharpness falloff.

Won't surprised by 2021 we gets closer to 1" sensor size.

I had a phone with a 1" sensor 4-5 years ago. Look at how thick it was, thanks to that large lens.

Guess why the Pureview 808's camera section is just about double the thickness of the Xiaomi Note 10. :)

                  • @eug: Nokia Pureview 808 overall thickness is almost 14mm, the Xiaomi Note 10 is 9.7mm. That's nowhere near double, and that's partly due to Nokia Pureview 808 older tech which made a lot of things thicker as well.

I specifically said the camera section, which is 17.95mm. That just shows you how hard it is to make a good thin lens - the lens area is so much thicker than the rest of the phone. It's 1.85x thicker than the Xiaomi Note 10, and more than double the thickness of a current flagship like the Galaxy S10.

The rest of the phone is nothing special, and just about every other phone back in 2012 (the Galaxy S3 era) was far slimmer. The S3 was 8.6mm. Tech wasn't so primitive back then that all phones had to be 14mm thick.

      • The 2014 Panasonic CM1 had a 1" sensor. But yeah, the camera section was very thick, at 21mm. Looked like an amazing camera though. Add some of today's software wizardry & it would be an awesome snapper. Not so good for other things though.

        • Yup, I had one. It really was a phone built into a camera rather than the other way round.

I'm actually more impressed with the software magic that can be done with small sensors today.

Add some of today's software wizardry & it would be an awesome snapper.

Yeah, that's really what it was lacking. That sensor with today's processing would be quite amazing. I don't see a large market for a 21mm-thick phone nowadays though! In daylight today's small sensors probably shoot better photos than the CM1 ever did.

  • my nokia 7.1 is due to get android 10, and gets monthly security updates already, probably no real driver for an upgrade.

  • Excellent deal on offer here. Secured the final one available by phone reservation today at JB HI-FI Caringbah. Amazingly it also came bundle/sealed with Nokia True Wireless Earbuds (RRP~$199) which came as a total surprise.

  • How is this vs the S10e?
