[VIC] Free Recycle Right Fridge Magnet and/or Bin Sticker for City of Melbourne Residents from City of Melbourne

180

Was just doing some cleaning up, had to look up where old broken trainers should go… And on the bottom of the page, there's a form to fill in to get a fridge magnet for what goes into the recycle bin. Presumably it's one of those with a bunch of ticks and crosses. Thought this might be handy for some of you. Maybe check your local council for similar offers if you are not in the city.

    All goes to landfill anyway

    • About to say the same

    • so then what's the point of recycling?

There's a theory, but it's not being put into practise.
I suggest continuing to recycle. They have to fix it eventually but currently our recycling isn't getting recycled.
I've heard we normally export recycling materials but China doesn't want them anymore.
Meanwhile places that do use recycled materials buy the stock from overseas. So we have our own warehouses filled products to be recycled and we purchase plastic pellets, paper pulp, etc from Malaysia. We're the weak link in the recycling chain. Surely the government should substidise recycling costs for environmental sake, sell our recycling to the factories in Malaysia we're buying from. /rant

From a recent article in The Age:

Doesn’t it all go to landfill anyway?

No. Fourteen councils were still sending some recycling to landfill at the end of November, but many affected by the downfall of recycler SKM – which forced thousands of tonnes to the tip earlier this year – have negotiated contracts with new recyclers.

  • So…where should old trainers go? Landfill right?

Does it have where to dispose of the magnet?

    • "Refuse, reuse, recycle." Don't take it in the first place if it isn't going to be used.
