  • Competing with their own Corrie hatch

  • I love the classic street sleeper, hopefully the production version doesn’t look too radical.

  • I know cars can’t think, but that car looks really angry.

  • +1

Just noticed the article this morning on news.com.au and I'm excited.

Maybe it's a step in the right direction and eventually the resurrection of the GT4. I can only dream.

This will make a great daily. That way I can work my wrx sti and have that as a weekend car.

The most exciting thing, it's not a collaboration.

  • +2

lmao its faster than the 86, that has like a 0 to 100 of around 8.6 seconds
very nice spec list tbh lets hope toyota aus doesnt get too crazy with the prices and does not demand 50k for it, if this thing sells for 30, they wouldnt be able to produce enough of them. if 35k still good, 40 not so good.

should call it the gt4 not yaris or anything, just gt4

My EV is 0-100 in 2.6s

    • i assume you are talking about the Porsche 918.. cool comparison bro

      • -1

        No, Tesla Model S.

      Thanks for sharing.

    • -1

Yeah but with no input from you.

    • +2

Cost is about the same, right?

  • That is way too much to pay for any type of Yaris and good luck not losing a heap when you sell.

  • +3

1000% i would own and buy one.

would probably buy second hand once prices are around 20k though, very expensive new for such a small car.

however i just love small, light sporty cars. this car would be loads of fun i feel.

    • Exactly my thoughts. Would be very tempting to get a second hand one once the prices drop a bit!

      • -1

It will drop $10k as soon as it drives off the floor.

        • no it would not, maybe in a years time after release that statement would be true

      • my prediction is 37-42k

price is the only factor to determine how successful this car will be

and i feel they usually get it wrong (thanks to australia tax)

  • Interesting

  • I suspect it will be priced like the outgoing Audi S1

    • The Audi S1 is a real ripper of a car. So much tuning potential left in it too.

  • I’m such a fan of the base model yaris for city driving. Spacious, great fuel economy and incredibly painless to drive and park + nothing ever goes wrong with them. Good for the $$$ as well.

This could be a fun sleeper around town (if it isn’t overtly obvious what it is)

Should be hybrid if its going to carry the GR name. Even WRC is going hybrid. That leaves the Dakar Hilux as the only GR racecar thats still non-hybrid. GR gave toyota their only lemans "win" with hybrid. Therefore a crappy GR road car should definitely be hybrid.

    • Supra wears the GR badge…

Looks ugly in that weird paint. Not for me thanks.

  • top marketing toy yoda

    • Me? I'm just a salesperson. Genuinely curious!

See, I find it interesting just how much Toyota is changing, particularly the perception of the brand too. Go to any comment section on Caradvice etc and primarily its all positive about the brand. Very rare to find that, given peoples' differing opinions and cars can be really subjective.

      • Ive always found most of the JDMs to be on the money.

        • -1

          This would be an ADM.

    • baby toy yoda

  • Betting it's going to be overpriced for what it is.

  • Looks like an awesomely fun daily.

  • A genuine sporty Toyota? I'm shocked. I didn't think it was possible anymore.

    • that new supra is dope. Too expensive, though.

  • Woah…thats like a Corolla had a threesome with a ford focus and a CHR…….

  • This looks a great fun car but they're hinting 40k+ pricing. Wont sell for that pricing. Like the "Supra" asking near $100k. You wont see them on the roads. Ask anyone choice between a Yaris and a WRX for the same price. Which is a shame because from what i seen looks awesome. Id rather this over the Supra as a fan of the old Celica GT4.

However I'm going to keep on eye out at auctions later on. Would be a good car to upgrade my Pro_ceed GT to.

180kw from a 3cyl with AWD with a manual, sounds like a really fun little car to rip around in as a daily, love a good hot hatch.

    • People would more likely be cross shopping this with other hatches Eg 308gti,cupra, fiesta, i30n or the polo gti

      • Quite possibly but GT4 is manual only and AWD. Thats suby market

  • This is gonna be an absolute ripper of a car. It looks wild from behind with those pumped out guards. If it’s a reasonable price i might consider buying one of these.

  • I'm sure it'll look better without that horrifying paint job (deliberate to hide the design somewhat?).

But I'm not interested in any hot hatches. The extra pep is pretty useless to me and the extra cost is wasted.

  • Seems to be some good information here;

    https://www.caradvice.com.au/814710/2020-toyota-yaris-gr-rev…

Unfortunately AUS buyers won’t have the option of the Performance pack, which amongst other things, gives it better diff options for hammer it to its maximum grip type driving ability.

The prospect of it coming into our market without the option of the top spec model and any where near $50 k would be a tough sell. If the non performance options are in the $35-40 k range it might get some traction with the hot hatch crowd.

Either way, I for one will be heading down to my local Toyota dealer when it’s released to take it for a spin for sure!!

  • You need to put a i would buy it and drive it…

0-100 in under 6 secs with a 3-cyliner 1.6? Sounds like when Samsung claims the new phone battery can last up to 3 full days of usage with enough leftover to power your lights in case the electricity goes out.

    • +1

Yes, this one has a turbo attached and is awd…

    • Definitely possible if pushed over 4000RPM. I can see why you're in disbelief seeing as you don't ever go over 4000RPM.

      • LOL - comparing 4000RPM in a 3 cylinder golf cart to a Mustang is just next level hysteria. My car literally has more than double the amount of shooting cylinders as this Toyota. So maybe before you comment with blanket assumptions that it's safe to go over 4000RPM, check your local road rules and perhaps get some experience in other cars first.

      • ^woosh

  • Put this engine 1.6t in the next gen 86 and you will get me excited.

    • Thing is, that would mean that Toyota would have to produce the 86 I guess, which they don't

      • next gen model has been confirmed right?

so get subaru or whoever to produce it ;)

  • I would consider it. Love small hot hatches although it will take a lot for me to get rid of my Abarth 595 Competizione.

  • If it's under 35k I'm in. Above 40k and I don't think this will be a long running model.

  • -1

I'm over the hot hatches. Over these try hard wannabes who can't afford a good car. Speeding around in these shopping trolleys like their in the F1.

    • -1

Over these try hard wannabes who can't afford a good car.

Sorry, I don't buy cars made in Nazi land. PRefer the reliable hatches from kamikaze land.

Over these try hard wannabes who can't afford a good car.

The only try hards are the cute little mums and dads who think driving around in a $150k luxury makes them cool. At the end of the day, they're just mums and dads in their shitty suburban lifestyles. The only people who are worthy of envy are those in super cars driving past their mansions in the inner-city and eastern suburbs of Sydney and Melb.

      • The hot hatch that actually comes to mind mostly is the "German" VW Golf. And conversely the real car that comes to mind is the Asian Kia Stinger.

  • Trying to take fiesta St sales? Plus that of the rumoured i20n

  • im keen depending on price. would make a wicked city car.

  • If Toyota released an awd turbo corolla, I would definitely consider it.

    • If Toyota released an awd turbo corolla, I would definitely consider it.

That's a dumb idea. Corolla is associated with longevity, fuel economy, reliability and the most purchased car in history. Putting a turbo in it will just hurt its brand.

They should just create a new hatch altogether instead of modding these already great cars.

  • Yeh Maybe. Do they have a hybrid version?

    • No, not of the GR. The new Yaris will have a hybrid option though

  • It's Yaris with a 3 pot engine
    And horsepower isn't everything

    Nuff said

  • As a bloke who has owned bunch of the potential competitors it will be good to see another model in the micro/small hot hatch mix. I can't see them selling big numbers though.

  • Do what makes YOU happy. I've grown to the hot hatch segment myself. To think, this puts out the same power as a 5L VS Commodore 185i (or equivalent Ford of the day) and faster 0-100. Who'd have thought we'd ever be talking about a 3 cylinder achieving that. Amazing tune by Toyota.

My only gripe is not getting the performance pack, price is the reason it won't arrive and our AUD won't help but I really think we should be given the option, even if only a limited number arrived.

  • Another article on the car, a bit more specific about the mechanicals and the driving

  • Official pricing for the base model: 3.96 million yen. converts to $52k aud without taxes.

I can’t see them selling many at that price.

    • The idea wouldn't be for it to be a volume seller

More power than a Golf GTi 😁

      • +1

yeah I read on the media release that it has its own special line for manufacture with experienced builders. So it’s definitely a bit special and probably hand built to large degree. In addition to components like the carbon fibre roof and aluminium panels it was never going to be cheap. Hopefully it’s not priced out of the market making it a unicorn.

  • For $52k I would take a Golf R over it any day because:
    1. It's German (ahem);
    2. The DSG allow my cousin never driven a manual before to downshift right before the red light to make it sound cool with auto rev match:
    3. When the light turns green, only one pedal to take off;
    4. Has all the bells and whistles;
    5. It's a sports car that is practical (more like a shopping trolley wanting to be a sports car);
    6. It's an Audi S3 under the VW skin;
    7. It is reliable.

Feel free to add more to this list.

    • +1

I couldn't take you seriously from point 2 onwards 😂
Nek minnit you'll say the Golf has lower emissions 😉

  • Hopefully we get some more news over the next few months. The wait to the end of the year is just too long!

I have half decided to wait at least until the facelift i30N comes out… the Yaris might be out at the same time so it would be good to drive both and see. Of course this will probably be 5-10k more expensive.

    • New model Yaris comes out mid-may, hopefully the GR isn't far behind

      • Hopefully we get an idea of a price around then too. Also… knowing Toyota there will be a big waiting list so could possibly be waiting until next year for one :(

  • If they make it around $45k drive away Im down

    • Most places (online) say that its gonna be around 60k AUS yeah thats pass, there are other options like the STi or the Golf R. That said I'll wait for the release "Surprise me Toyota"

  • Anymore news on this?

Currently holding off buying a STI.

    • +1

9th November is when it will be available.

There's pics and engine info all over the interwebz now, but pricing won't come out till October or so.

    • Great price. Would love one. I wonder how long it will take to sell 1000 at that price.

      • I really think that'll really get the pre-orders going. Only need each dealership to sell 3-4

        • +1

You have to be pretty keen to order even before the press reviews.

          • @Brick Tamland: There's already been first drives of it, as there was with Supra.

As the article says, you're spending only $3k more than a Yaris ZR…! Different markets etc yes, but in terms of value for money it's pretty strong.

Would certainly make for a fun track day car for that price, and yay for a manual gearbox!

I mean, it's cheaper than an 86 GTS, not much more than a GT, and we all know how little power that car has

            • @spackbace: Can you explain how to pre order next Wednesday? Is it via the my Toyota app?

              • @Circly: Sure is. $1,000 deposit, and probably pick your best dealer, who will take care of it from there

                • @spackbace: Cool thanks. I downloaded the app and it wasn't clear what to do once you click on a dealer.

I suppose there will be clearer instructions on the app once the deal go live!

    • I'm speechless. Even the $50k normal price is surprising. The fact they giving a $10k discount must mean there hasn't been much interest in pre orders.

I need a 4 door but I'm tempted. $10k is your first year of depreciation on a $50k car. So keep for a year and sell for what you paid.

      • Given the limited production of this little car it may keep its value better

        • I just re read the article, Toyota thinks it'll take 18 months to sell the discounted 1000 so won't be selling for the buy price in 12 months time after all. There really mustn't be much interest in it.

          • @apsilon: I think the market is quite limited for this car with it being firstly a manual. Then the size will reduce it again, it may be to small for most people.

            • @Brick Tamland: Many people buy the 86 without needing the back seats (which are useless anyway), and Supra/MX5 etc etc are 2-seat cars

              • @spackbace: Thats fine for coupes but with a hot hatch I feel that they should be somewhat practical.

                • @Brick Tamland: But why? If the same money buys an 86 or Yaris GR, you still can't put people on the back seat. If anything, you'll have more usable space in the Yaris compared to the 86

                  • +1

@spackbace: I've owned a lot of 2 door cars over the year, though most have also been 2 seaters, but those that did have rear seats, they were never really all that useful. They were better off folded down to make room to carry stuff. Anyone looking to buy a 2 door should know, even if it has 4 or 5 seats, you should really primarily view it as a 2 seater.

                  • @spackbace: Are the back seats in these more usable than the 86?

The ones in the 86 are just for show.. After 5 Mins I wanted out.

                    • @Circly: Unlikely

Buy it to use as a 2-door, 2-seat car. Same as the 86, the rear seats wouldn't be usable

                      • @spackbace: That's a shame.. I was hoping for a bit more room.

I've watched one Japanese review and the host (a Japanese woman) went and sat at the back. She fit fine but then she was probably 5 ft tall.

  • -1

Watching the carwow hot hatch race and seeing the new mini gp destroy them all, yet gp is already sold out in aus due to limited numbers.
Lets hope real world results make this a decent car.
