The same question could have been asked when the CC GSR Lancer lobbed.
Dunno mitsubishi I think Evo, subaru, I think WRX. Toyota I don't think Yaris. I don't mind the vehicle, was a genuine question. ( I drive a corolla and a ford transit so I doubt it impacts me) I just don't think a car with the Yaris name at the price point is gonna move numbers
Corolla AE86
What about the overseas versions, the GRMN was a pretty tasty Yaris.
@[Deactivated]: I was a pretty big fan of my imported Toyota starlet GT Turbo. Car was a beast!
If the price is right and they're fun to drive it could go alright.
@Soluble: Knowing the way carmakers price higher spec cars it’ll be $50K plus On roads
@[Deactivated]: It all comes down to price! I'll be interested if they're good value (probably 2nd hand).
Great to see Toyota re-recognising the importance of sports cars for direct consumers and elevating the brand! The formula sounds fantastic. Glad they didn't cheap out with FWD, hope they don't still. 1,300 kg seems a little fat for a 3 cylinder 3 door even if it has AWD. I hope it comes in significantly under that. 1.6 L is big for a 3 cylinder, fingers crossed for it sounding good.
@Scrooge McDuck: And now for a new MR2…
@Scrooge McDuck: There's been some teaser videos of it driving around, has some nice pops and crackles ;)
My first thought too… give it a new name! :)
Give me a EVO X or WRX STI
Nah, light and agile > powerful but heavy. This is honestly closer to the legendary AE86 than the 86.
Why not the 9 or lower? 4G63 was always the better engine. Plus Evo 6 weighs nearly the same as this with more power and 10x more potential with that cast iron block.
Yep, 4G63T was the beast, also Galant came with the same non turbo 4G63 as I know, That was my dream car for a long time
Had 2 galants but unfortunately the NA ones - 2L 4cyl and 2L V6. Was gonna get a 2001 VR4 but then didn't, though they don't seem to have held up well
throbby three-cylinder?
But yeah. Looks interesting.
I bet it comes in appliance white, ready to sticker it up
.
Yes all those throbbing pistons thrashing away
(In, suck, explode, blow, out) x 3
At least you will be able to find in the car park at your local shopping centre.
How much?
Article mentions $35k, but apparently local pricing not yet set.
35k for a Yaris, it is expensive
Lol more like 40-50k
I read that is the reviewer hoping that would be the price in base spec. Toyota were very non commital.
Tell them dreaming
I like it.
I imagine it is inspired by the WRC Yaris.
A lawn mower on steroids

Any car that describes itself as 'throbby'……best avoided
Past ‘throbby’ experiences you would like to share ?
Best not.,….
Must be a rev monster. No low down torque for sure. Very fun indeed if stripped
Sorry, I didn't list the fact it's turboed ;) I wouldn't think it would have a big turbo, so hopefully turbo lag isn't crazy
It will be a big turbo with a lot of lag for a 1.6l to make the claimed power.
Don't rev above 4000
It's ok, it's not a Mustang
Have a read of the article. It apparently has "oodles of low-down oomph with great willingness to rev all the way to its 7000rpm redline".
These turbo engines have a surprisingly good amount of torque low down.
I did but what are they comparing it to?
Oodles is very subjective. From experience the only thing it can be compared to is the late model fiesta 3.
An unbalanced 3 will not produce much torque low down. It would have a larger turbo to reach those rated KW meaning anti lag (which it won’t ) is required to produce power low down or very small turbos.
Would be interesting to see the powerband of the vehicle and chassis performace
"Oodles" may be subjective, but it is objectively much much better than "no low down torque".
These car journalists know what they're talking about, and they've actually experienced this engine, unlike you and I. So whatever magic the Toyota engineers have weaved, you have to acknowledge it looks like they've created a 3-pot with good torque early on. Certainly not "no low down torque". Not even "not produce much torque low down". It's "oodles of low-down oomph".
@deek: Yeah, it’s also just propaganda for the new car.
Do you know what happens to a turbocharged car during our summer?
Do you understand the mechanics of a 3 cylinder?
Do you understand the complexities of pairing a 3 cyl with an heavy 4 wheel drivetrain?
It will be a high rev, low gear ratio vehicle for sure- unless it ends up being a diesel.
Depending on how it’s tuned, I’m hoping for a good usable powerband.
You don’t want a street car which needs 4200rpm to start getting expected performance.
Time will tell when more people get to experience it for themselves
Unless the gear ratios are a complete mess, how does an AWD with 185kw/350Nm lunch box take ~6s to 100kmph?
Also, how much is being crammed into a Yaris to make it 1300kg?!
A lot of tech and safety these days.
The Corolla ZR Hybrid has a kerb weight of 1400kg
Oh, and article says less than 6 seconds, not approx 6 seconds
My time with cars have taught me that "under 6s" means 5.9s in the best possible scenario, never to be repeated again.
It’s also the awd in it. Hybrids are heavy because it contains electric and petrol motors as well as battery packs
0-100 times don’t mean everything. AWD and a turbo should be enough fun once it’s up and going.
I'm in two minds about AWD.
It's made me a much lazier driver and you do lose a lot of raw power through the extra drive shaft.
Best comparison I had was a GTI vs R. Same car, bigger turbo and AWD on the R. GTI always feels faster.
I’ve never been a front wheel drive fan, and not much is rear wheel drive anymore.
@Euphemistic: Heh. I keep one of each. As much as AWD feels "soft", it's still the one I tend to drive.
@[Deactivated]: Cars feel more powerful in the wet. Same same.
Special thing about this and system is the adjustable power bias to front and rears! That’s pretty neat. Apparently we lose the lsd which is kind of shit
Import a 2nd hand model from Japan?
@Scrooge McDuck: I don’t think you would be able to import your own whole car if they sell it here. Maybe just the lsd
How much power? Nearly everyone's 4wd system does some sort of torque vectoring
@krisspy: User selectable 60:40, 50:50, 40:60.
It’s pretty nuts, must a heck of a transfer case knowing Toyota reliably requirements.
For comparison, gtr is variable 20:80 - if you must the front too much it will break. Wrx is fixed 50:50.
I suspect that’s why this thing is so heavy, disregarding confort and safety add ons.
A lot of manual Japanese cars tend to be geared short and require shifting to 3rd gear to reach 100 which hurts the 0-100 time a lot, compared to cars that can just make it to 100 before hitting redline in 2nd.
It's nice to see a new sports car coming out with a manual box though.
Yet an another bar fridge with bit more woof this time ?
Looks like a little SUV that hasn't grown up yet.
Looks fun and personally I would like to own one, but I don't want to be associated with soccer moms.
You must live in smallville because I've never seen anywhere that associates micro cars with soccer moms.
I was thinking that it looks like a wannabe SUV.
Will be associated to soccer moms by normal people and at the same time will not be deemed "worthy" by soccer moms because my SUV is so small lol
Lol it's a 3 door hatch. Very far removed from a family suv!
I have no problem with driving soccer mums.
@Scrooge McDuck: Front, rear or on all fours?
@krisspy: I don't mind, I'm adventurous after all.
Smaller Japanese models can't take as much to fill up at the pump.
On all fours handles well over speed humps, especially when there's junk in the trunk.
But when the river runs red, take the dirt track instead.
Seen what a rally looks like recently
Oh boy, this may convince me to change cars. Looks like a hot hatch done right: ridiculous specs and two doors.
a yaris that's faster than 86/brz ?
maybe toyota can plonk this engine into their 86
It's pretty cool.
Great, fun idea, but the price tag will kill it. No one is going to pay $50k+ for a Yaris, no matter what drivetrain they put in it.
Sounds like it’s just marketing malarkey to me…
PS: I still want one :D
PPS: it should have been the Corolla that got this treatment, to compete with the RS Focus and the i30N
Likely be a low volume thing, like Supra, but something to show what the brand is capable of.
No longer whitegoods on wheels 🙂
Gonna trade the 500? 😉
Estimated price is $40k.
I reckon it will be so. The Clio RS and Polo GTI is only mid 30s. Fair enough, no AWD but seeing as perception of Toyota is cheaper, I reckon it has to be within 15% price increase of said vehicles to compete.
Agree. It may have a niche life as a special class of race car, but otherwise I think it will price itself of the market. Particularly as it seems the desirable version with LSD etc won’t be coming here.
Also, young people just don’t seem that interested in really driving anymore. No rush to get a licence for example, happy with auto.
Ithis set up would have been better in the corolla.
Or more importantly, the 86.
Just get a Toyota Blade Master G
Holy shit, that's basically a Corolla with the Aurion V6 in it. Now that thing would haul. We never get any of the cool Toyota vehicles here…
@spackbace: Yeah, I saw that one. Not much good to me in NZ though. Would need to add GST, Freight, Compliance, Approval, Stamp Duty, etc… Can get something just as interesting, like a Caldina GT4, but for less, and already landed in Aus.
@pegaxs: Buy Yaris GR, swap everything between it and your Mrs Corolla Hybrid ;)
Nah, due to all the speed traps and whatnot, it's not worth buying something fun anymore. Even driving at 5 a.m with no traffic, there'll be cops where you least expect them.
Agree. I drive early mornings and usually gun it down certain roads.
The one time I was not there happened to be coppers waiting to nail someone so I haven't done it since :)
It sounds like hilarious fun. I think AWD is not a good move. A sporty suspension tune on front wheel drive is heaps of fun without the added ballast of AWD.
Where would I fit all of my kids Spack? So potato :p
Stop getting more kids then!
Or buy his n hers for the twins to learn in 😉
Stop getting more kids then!
Easier said than done.
I don't mind it in non-camo white actually. The Yaris badge is a bit of a turn-off though.
It needs a bright, out there colour to match it
Like how the Focus XR5 had the orange, Swift Sport has the yellow
@spackbace: Wouldn’t be a Yaris unless it was available in “Toyota White”
@pegaxs: What about senior citizen silver?
Potatoes gon' potate.
More like condoms bought off ozb gon' off…
It looks like plenty of fun. It's not something I'd buy new, but I'll pick one up a decade on as a car I can throw around on weekends.
Unfortunately for the early adopters (and fortunately for me), I don't see this particularly holding value well. The 86 is a unique case because even almost a decade after its initial launch, it's held value much better than almost any other car you could have bought at the time. It's got a cult following that I don't see this Yaris picking up.
I can see this becoming a cult classic, especially if it's a very limited production run. Seriously, AWD, Yaris size and weight, and apparently turbo'd to the gills. That's a great recipe.
Hard to say, it seems like just another hot hatch. Everyone is making them now and they're getting smaller and smaller.
The 86 is a really special car IMO. In an age where everyone cares about kW and 0-100 times, the 86 actually focuses more on the driving experience. It takes corners so well and you can really be aggressive at the track coming into the corners.
Drove both an 86 and an STi at track meet a while back. Sure the STi is much faster, but it never gave me as much confidence as the 86 in the corners.
The 86 has held its value well because supply was heavily restricted at launch and it has barely changed over its model cycle.
Once again Australia misses out on the top spec model. Why? Cost is a BS justification, it'd sell.
Funnily enough, with the new Fiesta ST, it's the other way around.
Australia gets the top spec model, and Ford Australia will discontinue all the lower cost versions.
86 owners on suicide watch after learning a yaris is quicker. What are Toyota thinking?
Do you think the Yaris name will hurt it?
