Great deal on this head unit. Usually priced at $563 at JB Hifi. Note that this is fulfilled via Amazon US which can complicate Warranty. As far as I know you will only get the 1-year Sony Warranty as this won't be covered by Australian Consumer Law.

I'd probably add $40 and buy local stock. https://frankiesautoelectrics.com.au/sony-xav-ax5000-6-95-ap…

    • Frankies is great

  • Wasn't this $100 less on Black Friday? I'm personally hoping boxing day sales beat the current 'sales'.

    • That was for a different model, the XAV-AX3000.

      • So the 5000 never goes on sale? Either way, hoping sales come to it.

        • It does from time to time, this deal is a good example.

  • anyone have one of these units? i want to buy one but i dont know if this unit can output audio through a usb out into a DAC. similar to how a speaker dock works

  • Does anyone have experience with mirrorlink? I can't seem to find many units that are both android auto and mirrorlink compatible. I don't even know if mirrorlink is any good. Feels like android auto is good for voice control and mirrorlink is good for controlling phone through head unit.

It's definitely getting time to upgrade my head unit to something with a bit more hands free phone use as I am getting a bit frustrated by 'ok google' not doing what I actually ask.

    • Why would you need both? Android Auto includes all of the core apps that are required in your car (Phone, Maps, Spotify, etc.)

      • I would really like to be able to respond to facebook messages through the voice recognition on my android keyboard. I am being a bit picky here! But mirroring/mirrorlink might be better suited for that.

I probably should try and play with android auto first to see if this hangup over the feature is a silly one.

        • You can list and respond to facebook messages via voice, and it will reply using messenger. However, you can only start a new conversation via SMS. Shouldn't be using any sort of keyboard while driving.

          • @lucyrenegade: The keyboard is just the button with the mic on it for messages but that was based on the fact that android auto (the app) doesn't seem to let me open/read/reply to messages on facebook with voice which is incredibly annoying.

And yes, yes, it's not good to message in the car regardless. I usually restrict myself to hands free calling but I am a carer for someone with a speech impairment and if they give me instructions while driving it's a huge pain right now as she uses facebook messenger to communicate. If she wants me to pick something up from the shops on the way I have to touch my phone which I am desperately trying to avoid.

            • @krunchymoses: Oh I see. With android auto, you press the message received from facebook and it reads it out to you, and then asks whether you want to reply or not. It sounds like that may be insufficient for your needs though. You could go into supercheap and I am sure they would let you plug in your phone to test it out. In my experience mirrorlink is way more limited than android auto.

              • @lucyrenegade: I reckon that will do. I can talk, it's just that she can't! And I keep on getting messages from her while driving and feeling I need to pull over to read them. Which is not always feasible.

The android auto app was not including facebook messenger and it was really tricky to use for me. I might find it is different when it's on the actual head unit.

                • @krunchymoses: I would suggest that you get your boss to do a risk analysis and agree on some safer strategies, and to explain why the current strategy is dangerous to you and her, and illegal. She may be able to text you one of a set series of images for shops, fuel, food, cigarettes, McDonald's, whatever, so you have minimal distraction. Or hold up a picture card when you are stopped. You should not have to but a new radio for one client.

                  • @rygle: How about emojis? If you have google say your messages it says what emoji someone has used.

  • +1

Does it work for frequencies of broadcast in Aus?

  • Radio tuning frequency steps are different in North America - make sure this unit allows you to select Radio Region (because most don't…)

  • Reviews on JB hifi don’t look good, at least for the wireless aspect.

  • I bought one a year ago for my daughter to replace her older7 inch Sony head unit.

Likes: really clean simple user interface unlike most especially ebay cheapies. Carplay works seamlessly. Decent sound.

Dislikes: Sony annoy me by rarely supporting these units with firmware updates ( and most other things sony imo). Forced obsolescence I know but pathetic none the less
