  • I don't understand. I can see the 3 woofers and the tweeter. Where are they hiding the 13cm midrange speaker? How can the midrange be the same size as the woofer? Or did they prevent one woofer from having its midrange filtered out?
All the specs say it's there, but where?

  • $300 is budget?
Is it worth paying much more for something better?
$300 seems like a decent commitment to me but I'm new to the speaker market.

It's budget average price is between $700 to $1000

Yes it's worth it I purchased 2 floorstanding front wharfedale speakers back in 2009 for $1000 they have amazing sound and even until this day they sound like they did back in 2009 no loss of quality whatsoever

      • Thanks for the advice, I'll go for a higher end set of speakers.

      • may I know what model are your speakers?

$300 is very cheap for new floorstanding speakers.

Budget is $100 for the small Edifiers that get posted here all the time.

These are worth the $200 extra in my opinion, but keep in mind you'll still need an amp as well.

These speakers are designed by Andrew Jones a highly regarded speaker designer, known for excellent preforming speakers using cheaper build materials.

He now works for ELAC, IMO best bang for buck speaker is the Uni-Fi UB5, see all the reviews. They are a little pricey here at around $1200 but can be had for around $700 including shipping. Which makes amazing value as their quality is often compared with speakers costing $2-3k.

  • The towers, centre and bookshelves are all good but don't get the sub, you want something with more control.

Speakers make the biggest difference relative to any other audio component - and hence you'll want to buy the best speakers within your budget. I have the Pioneer bookshelves (BS22) - not great - but not bad either. They sound their price - I wouldn't pay more than what Kogan is selling them for. But if your budget extends further - Q acoustics is another brand to consider. If sound quality rather than slam is important - a Q acoustics bookshelf speaker might be preferable to the Pioneer tower - especially if using a subwoofer.

    • they used to sell on amazon US around 700 USD for the whole set of 5.1 speakers, don't know why is is so expensive in Australia. I have Pioneer BS22 bookshelves, and to be honest, they didn't make any impression to me. They're flat, and warm sound.

These are great budget floorstanders. For the price you won't find anything better unless you have the knowledge to find some quality bargains second hand (hint: Krix anything!)

For music they are quite good. You'll likely want a decent sub depending on your preferred genre (hint: SVS!)

You'll definitely want their (or better) centre speaker for movies. Movies are a bit lacking setup in stereo. Again, a sub is essential.

Rear speakers save your money and buy cheap. Movies will mainly only use them for basic surround effects and immersion. If you can just pick up cheap in wall/ceiling speakers from Selby Acoustics. Cheap way to get into ATMOS as well!

Receivers have reeeeally plummeted in price in recent years. Grab whatever name brand (I recommend Denon) you can find for $300-450. Make sure the HDMI supports 4K/60 Hz for futureproofing at a minimum.
