Hello all, first post here.

I have been trying to buy one at a decent price for quite a while now but always missed out on the deals that get posted here like the expired OzBargain deal at $636.65 that sold out.

On a whim, I checked Amazon AU and came across the monitor for $674.10, shipped and fulfilled by Amazon Australia. The free standard shipping option arrives by Christmas, maybe Prime members might have improved shipping benefits but I am not a member.

Note: It says that the item is in stock for now though I do not know when it expires.

Lastly, don't forget Cashrewards to get back $21.45, effectively bringing this monitor down to $652.65.

Thanks!

I bought one a few days ago for $749. Won't even receive it until Wednesday.

That's a price protection claim for me. TYVM.

If Shopback pays the $50 cashback, I will have paid $624.10.

    • Oh nice! Hope there are no issues getting your claim.

      • There's rarely any problems with 28D. Sometimes they ask for proof of the price reduction, sometimes they don't.

I'm glad I missed out on the Wireless1 ebay deal now, because I will end up getting this cheaper through Amazon.

If I bought it today instead of Thursday I would have missed out on the $50 cashback. So I got the best deal possible.. for now.

I'll have to continue monitoring the price of this thing.

    • Bought this as well at $749…bummer. Can't even claim price protection.

      • ah, you don't have a CC with PP?

        It's essential to bargain hunting.

Just this month I got $160 back from one claim, $8 from another, and I'm expecting $75 from this one.

        • Unfortunately not. Is there any way I can go through Amazon directly?

          • @Notoriousbird: has it shipped yet? If not, cancel it and rebuy. I remember that day I got the last one in stock, and you preordered. So mine would have shipped before you (mine shipped Friday arvo) so maybe they haven't shipped yours yet?

They stopped doing price protection of their own long ago.

Theoretically back then you could have double dipped on price protection.

            • @lostn: Yes it shipped on Friday as well. I just checked their site, they don't even have a partial refund category, just a returns section.

              • @Notoriousbird: Bugger.

Amazon prices fluctuate very rapidly and frequently. It would lead to tons of refunds if they continued offering price guarantees.

          • @Notoriousbird: Contact Amazon support and ask for the price difference. People have had success simply through that

            • @aragornelessar: I contacted them and it didn't work. They don't offer any refunds until you return the product. Doesn't matter anyways because the monitor is sold out and it isn't worth the hassle. I had a feeling the monitor had limited stock anyways as it sold out in about an hour.

Got one during Black Friday sales, eBay (Futu I think)
Great screen. Was a little concerned at quality control, but on opening it, was perfect.
No dead pixels, no Backlight Bleed, just some IPS glow.
Great monitor, this is a pretty great price too.

I note though there’s no swivel. But rotate to portrait orientation, and lift are all fine.

    • +4

As someone OCD about the screen being centered exactly, the less adjustment the better. I hate when I accidentally touch the screen and swivel it slightly. Then I gotta take out the ruler and readjust until it's centered correctly.

No u. Hopefully it does come down to a similar price to the Wireless1 deal even though this deal is decent.

  • The one time that I finally catch one of these deals I can't get one because I'm on the brink of moving and the shipping will complicate things…
Just gonna have to wait till 2020 for a good deal.

  • Spent all weekend comparing 1440p 144hz monitors this weekend. This was the Victor. I'm going to see if I can pick it up with a price starting with 5 over the next month.

    • that might be ambitious.

What were your other options? I ended up going with this one because it was cheapest. The one I wanted most was the ASUS TUF Gaming but it isn't released in AU so has to be imported.

      • Not too ambitious.
It was $636 delivered last week.

Others were Msi or the new Gigabyte

        • It's only twice been $636 and sold out quickly. The last time it was that price it was sold out less than an hour after it was posted here. I kicked myself.

I don't think it drops that low any time soon. It's a recent release. There would need to be a model that supercedes it first.

          • +1

@lostn: It didn't sell out quickly last time at all. The code has been active every time they've had stock too.

Hopefully other new 144Hz and 240Hz monitors start showing up here so there's a little more price pressure on this, as it might make the 27GL83A available here too.

            • @jasswolf: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/504567

              Read the comments.

I eyeballed that listing every day since it came out. Within an hour of posting there was 0 stock left, with 75 sold.

There are still 75 sold. Which means it never got restocked.

Anyway, good luck. If you can find it for under $600 in the next month, post the deal so I can make another price protection claim.

              • +1

@lostn: I'm in the market for a TN QHD 240Hz, just saying there's a difference between getting them on your eBay watch list and them being OzBargained.

                • @jasswolf:

just saying there's a difference between getting them on your eBay watch list and them being OzBargained.

If you're the one finding the deals, sure. This will require you to check multiple sources every day.

If you're only seeing them when everyone else sees them too, they will get Ozbargained at this price. Even faster if it's under $600.

EDIT: Amazon have already sold out current stock at this price. It now says "Usually dispatched within 1 to 2 months."

                • @jasswolf: Isn't there only like one available with those specs? There's plenty of 240Hz at 1080p but don't think there is many at QHD.. Anyways, semi off topic; I'm considering selling my 27" QHD 144Hz Asus MG 278Q so I can buy this monitor. I don't do as much fps as I used to so I would prefer the color over the fast response of 1ms on my current panel. I bought this monitor for $670 just over a year ago so I don't wanna let it go for much less than $500, it's in mint condition with the box and rated as one of the best tn panels in it's class from memory. I know it was one of the few that got immediate Gsync compatibility from Nvidia as soon as they announced it. Anyone in southern QLD interested?

            • +1

@jasswolf: Agreed, hope they release the 27GL83A on Amazon AU.
Easily one of the best valued 1440p 144hz screen available outside of AU

    • have a look at the viewsonic vx2758-2kp-mhd went to $400 with ebay code

      • Hey mate, what code did you use?

        • expired now but have a look at the ozb history, will say that shipping took ages so i think not much in stock in aus

  • The wise screen equivalent one is not our in Australia yet right?

    • +1

I think it only just hit the market now in the US, so you're looking at a 4-8 week wait for AU typically.

    Bought it! Thanks OP!!

  • been dying to grab a deal on one of these. cheers op

  • This thing HDR or ?

Edit - LG says HDR10. Ok
    Buy it is

    • +1

      that doesn't mean much.

      The HDR isn't real HDR.

It doesn't even have enough brightness to meet the HDR400 standard which is already a lax standard.

All it can do is accept the signal and then convert it to SDR.

Its contrast ratio and lack of local dimming makes it not worth much as an HDR display.

      • oh really?
I've been wanting a "For everything" monitor. HDR for movies, decent DCI-P3 color gamut for photo editing AND fast response time and refresh rates for my twitch FPS that I play.
Looked up the new Asus TUF monitors that aren't avail here yet, still reading on them right now.

        • +2

The TUF also claims to be HDR, but it only has an 8 bit display which doesn't even meet the requirements of HDR10.

I don't think the monitor you are after exists yet. You'd be looking at a TV for that.

There are true HDR monitors, but they won't be 144hz or gsync. They're both aimed at different markets. If you're after an everything in one, it's going to be ultra expensive, more expensive than a big OLED TV.

        • The TUF is available now. Scorptec has it for $689.

  • Now says "Get it Thu, Jan. 9 - Tue, Feb. 11 with FREE delivery. Get it Wed, Jan. 8 - Mon, Feb. 10 if you choose faster delivery at checkout."

    • Thanks for that, I have updated the post.

  • Just bought one during black friday sales for about $700. Only downsides I've come across are a relatively poor contrast ratio of 800:1 and no HDR (can accept an HDR signal but doesn't have the hardware to actually meet any HDR spec). Otherwise fantastic monitor which I think I'll be able to use for a while yet.

An alternative to consider is the Asus TUF VG27AQ - missing DCI-P3 and also doesn't meet HDR spec, but comes with fancy new backlight strobing tech which works with VRR and better contrast ratios. Unfortunately not out in Australia yet, which is why I ended up going for the LG monitor instead.

    • Not many monitors can meet the HDR spec. Most of them are 350 nits.

You'd need a peak brightness of 600 nits for HDR600 or 1000 nits for HDR1000 as well as local dimming. This will not be cheap. And to combine it with 144hz would make it even more expensive.

      • If you're serious about HDR gaming, you don't want anything less than a 10,000 zone FALD, otherwise you tend to get noticeable halo effects in games that will annoy you endlessly.

In truth, you'll just want an OLED monitor, despite the caveats for a typical monitor use case.

If HDR isn't an issue, the only interesting features are wider colour gamuts (assuming games eventually attempt to support them) and 10-bit colour (or higher). I suppose those are guaranteed with HDR600, but there's HDR400 and non-spec monitors that provide them as well.

        • OLED monitors don't exist, unless you count huge 55" ones which are basically a TV without a tuner. There is also a portable OLED screen from Asus that costs about $13k right now.

          • -2

@lostn: You might want to take a look at JOELD-based professional models, and also the laptop OLEDs that are now commonplace.

FHD 120Hz OLEDs should be a thing next year, ramping up to 4K over time.

            • @jasswolf:

You might want to take a look at JOELD-based professional models, and also the laptop OLEDs that are now commonplace.

I think "professional" models is outside the spirit of comparison. I simply can't afford one. We are talking about consumer monitors here, the type and size you would find on a desk. When will they available and how much do they cost?

According to JOLED the monitor is "soon" to be delivered - for several thousand euros, the professional model. This monitor is not intended for PC gamers.

Yeah I don't think this changes anything. I said OLED monitors don't exist, and you refute that claim by citing a several thousand euros monitor for professionals and not intended for gaming? No one here is going to buy one. It's not even in the same class of product we are discussing here. It would be cheaper to buy a 55" Dell OLED monitor which was intended for presentations in a board room. Or just buy an LG OLED 65" TV.

The guy wanted an OLED monitor with HDR and 144hz for gaming, and your suggestion was to look into a professional monitor costing thousands and specifically not intended for gaming. Good suggestion.

And being that I said OLED monitors don't exist, I don't know why you bring up laptops screens as though they count as monitors. You can't plug something into a laptop and borrow its screen as a display. And even if you could, it's 15". Also, none of the laptop OLED screens have enough brightness to meet HDR1000.

FHD 120Hz OLEDs should be a thing next year

Where did you hear about this? Even laptop OLED screens are at least 4K. The only manufacturer of laptop OLED panels is Samsung and they are not making FHD OLEDs. 120hz would be new. I would totally buy a 120hz FHD OLED laptop. They just don't think the market for it is there.

              • @lostn: … none of the OLED TVs hit 1000 nits either, and such a metric matters less for OLED due to the depth of its dark contrast.

JOLED showed 21" FHD 120Hz panels at CES 2019, and their manufacturing plants have been ramping this year. The 'professional' monitor is a 4k 60Hz variant of the same panel dimensions.

In 3 weeks we should have more information from CES 2020, and I suspect more affordable FALD HDR and OLED options to discuss release dates for.

                • @jasswolf: OLED TVs do not require 1000 nits to reach HDR1000.

It only needs 500 nits to meet the HDR1000 spec due to its near infinite contrast ratio with per pixel dimming.

JOLED showed 21" FHD 120Hz panels at CES 2019, and their manufacturing plants have been ramping this year. The 'professional' monitor is a 4k 60Hz variant of the same panel dimensions.

I can't imagine they'd be within the budget of someone looking for a gaming monitor. Would be cheaper to buy a 55" B9 OLED TV.

                  • @lostn: The early panels we're talking about were before the HVM ramp for JOLED. They were professionally-tuned prototypes, in effect.

I don't think they'll be super affordable, but I think you'll see 4k120Hz 27" and 32" panels that are within reach of FALD competitors.

Innolux also seem to be set to release a 4k120Hz IPS panel that will be backlit by a FHD panel (i.e. 2 million FALD). Power consumption will likely be high, but it'll be interesting to see how it fairs (take a look at Hisense's ULED XD tech for an early preview of similar technologies).

    • The TUF is now available in Australia.

      https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/Monitors/25plus-inch/796…

      $689.

  • Damn, just missed the current batch. Really wanted it before New Year's for my new build. Tossing up between ordering now and hoping another batch becomes available, or just buying locally.

    • Is that what the 1 - 2 month shipping is about?

      • Yeah. They've sold out of the stock they have 'on hand' but I believe if they make another order from their supplier another batch of stock would become available for faster delivery. The current shipping times of 1-2 months would probably reflect the next routine order from the supplier barring any extra top ups.

Bit of guesswork on my part though, someone who works in retail might know more.

  • Bugger, missed this one. Too busy packing to move house.
