  • Got my Dad one of these. He loves it.

  • Amazing how prices have come down. My D3100 twin lens kit cost 800 something dollars back in 2010. I guess we can blame the gap between smartphone and SLR picture quality narrowing over the years.

  • That's amazing. I was looking at this a year ago and it was around $500-$550ish on OzBargain… but I ended up with a Canon EOS 200d instead.

    • 200d is better for video.

Good price, though i'd still choose mirrorless for not much more $. DSLR is on the way out.

mirror less with 4mp EVF electronic view finder are still over $2000, and dslr ovf optical view finder is the resolution at the back of your eye , and in bright conditions you want the view finder not the back lcd screen ….same problem as phone screen in bright light.

will be a while before we see 4mp evf mirrorless at entry level dslr prices.

  • Great beginners camera and that price is incredible. Huge bargain

  • Any recommendations on a camera bag in Melbourne?

SanDisk Extreme V30 UHS-I 256gb is $85 from msy which seems pretty reasonable.

Target had DSLR camera bags for $1
Looked surprisingly decent for that price

Work out what you plan to carry (including what lens you will be carrying) and then choose a bag.

Also have this camera and bought this one from eBay and quite happy with it. Reasonably well padded and sufficient pockets at a good price. Good value IMO.

    • Save your money for lenses and buy those $20 128gb Samsung cards. Low end cameras like this won’t have fast write speeds.

      • +2

Given the maximum of 30 minutes for video on the 3X00 models 128GB would be a bit of overkill. I've never got close to filling a 64GB on a 5300 or 3400 before basically having too many shots to jump to the ones I want without having tansfered them to a system with the ability to make directories and sub-directories. That includes 12 hour long time-lapse sequences with the help of battery packs…

        • Pretty much all cameras have a 30-minute video limit. Its because an EU rule that classifies devices that can do over 30-min recordings as video cameras and it attracts more taxes. Doesn't stop you from doing multiple clips to fill up the SD card of course.

Nikon D3500 only does 1080p at a fairly low bitrate… so generally won't consume that much space.

  • $397 currently. Lens is basically useless. An external flash which bends in the middle is also recommended.

    • It's the standard VR kit lense and works well. The 3300 came with a non-VR lense which I didn't mind, as it is lighter and if I needed VR on that one, I'd be giving up my driving license. There are ~ 60 years worth of lenses available for the nikons, with only the earliest and some early macro lenses unsuitable.

My main go-to is a 35 year old 105mm macro AI-s which is full manual on the 3300 and manual with apature control on the 5400, but my 18-200G VR for when I'm feeling lazy is most often in the 18-55 range anyway. I accept a little barrel distortion over the sharp " basically useless" kit lens for convenience.

Then again, I learned on a Kodak Brownie. For those wanting a DLSR, the main choices are Canon or Nikon - both with an adequate and acceptable 18-55 kit lens.
