  • Fees Waived in Exchange for a Can of Food

What if you don't have any fees due?

    • +25

Then you can just give a can of food. A kind hearted person like you would do that just that.

        • +1

          I guess you are wrong

          • @[Deactivated]: read the posting rules.

            • +8

@jv: But it is a bargain for all those people who do have fees.

It would be ridiculous to expect all bargains to be relevant to all people.

Deals on android apps may be a bargain for people with android devices but not a bargain for those that exclusively use apple devices.

              • -6

                @chewbot:

But it is a bargain for all those people who do have fees.

                No it's not. A fine isn't a purchase.

                • @jv: It's not a fine. It's a service that takes away your fees in exchange for something much cheaper than your fees.

                • @jv: If you think it’s against the posting rules then go ahead and neg it.

                  • @SlappersOnly:

                    go ahead and neg it.

That would be against the voting rules…

                    • @jv: It’s against the rules to neg a post that’s not a bargain?

                      • @SlappersOnly:

It’s against the rules to neg a post that’s not a bargain?

You are only allowed to neg under certain conditions. You can't neg an 'alleged' deal just because it's against the rules.

                        Read the voting rules.

                        • @jv: I stand corrected. Please report this deal then.

Edit: If you feel like the report rules are too basic for this issue you can always bring up your concerns with a mod.

For more complex issues, use the Talk with a Moderator forum.

                • +1

@jv: Just looked up the rules because I was curious.

                  Charities/Donations

Freebie deal posts from charities targeted at specific groups where you receive a physical item in the mail are not permitted (with exception of a deal posted by a rep). See discussion.

Charity deals where the user receives nothing in return are not a bargain but feel free to post any charities or good causes on the forums.

You aren’t receiving a physical freebie or receiving nothing in return.

If your issue is giving more than you need to then maybe moderators should also consider removing all humble bundle deals.

                • +6

@jv: The library fee is not just fines. In Brisbane ,you need to pay 80 cents to book 1 book. You only need to pay it once it reaches 10 dollars.

Pay that with a can of food

                  • @sorasora:

In Brisbane ,you need to pay 80 cents to book 1 book.

                    That changes things then….

Don't your rates pay for the library?

                    • @jv: So everything is now settled and you believe this is a bargain?

                      • -1

                        @SlappersOnly:

and you believe this is a bargain?

                        No…

                        I see you didn't upvote it either…

                        • +1

@jv: Because I read the voting rules as you instructed.

                          No Vote

                          • If the deal doesn't apply to you, you don't like the company or you want to leave a warning for people about the business or deal, you can leave a comment and then not vote.

                          • If your reason is purely that you've been asked to vote by someone, do not vote.

I would still suggest you report it if you don’t believe this is a deal to help assist in quickly identifying inappropriate posts.

                          • @SlappersOnly: Though this could also be relevant.

                            No Vote

I would still suggest you report it if you don’t believe this is a deal

That isn't mandatory under the commenting rules.

                            • +1

                              @jv: That’s why I said it was a suggestion.

                              • +1

                                @SlappersOnly: Good point.

@jv: So you reported it and it wasn't removed so you are wrong…

Or you didnt report because you know you are wrong…

                                  😆

                                • +1

                                  @jv: You seem like a fun guy…. /s

                • +4

@jv: Also covers administration charges like holds (transfer item to your nearest library), which BCC charges 80c / item.

Otherwise would have to pay cost of transport to library with item on the shelf.

This amnesty covers my administration charges each year, for the cost of a can of food.

                  Definitely a bargain.

                  • @INFIDEL: I’ve never lived in a town with more than one library before but can you drop off books at a different library you got it from?

                    • +1

@SlappersOnly: Yes - no charge to return at a different BCC library.

Doing the opposite, picking up an item from a different library costs 80c!

Brisbane has the largest council in Australia by population & one of largest by area. Distance between libraries can be nearly 50km.
(Sandgate to Sunnybank Hills libraries = 40km - way too far to return a book!)

        • For clarification purposes, this deal does not violate deal posting guidelines as users who owe library fees will get something in return. This discussion about whether it is a deal or not has gone on for for a while now, and will be marked as off-topic as to not distract from discussion about the deal itself.

      From the website:

"Residents without outstanding library fees are also welcome to provide donations of canned food/goods at their local library to help spread Christmas cheer to those in need."

    • What a hard question!

  • +2

You can add Eastern Regional Libraries (Eastern Melbourne) to that list.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eozptk5akPg&feature=youtu.be

Fines Amnesty from Monday December 2!

    It's the season of giving!
From December 2 til the end of the month, we will be waiving fines from your card. Drop into one of our branches and post your details in our letterbox to Santa and all charges will be removed from your account.
If you'd like to join in the giving spirit, you can donate non-perishable food items or any amount of money at your library and we'll ensure they go to families in need this Christmas.

    • +1

      Thanks, added to OP.

      • SOMEONE suggest me some good deals of food cans pls

    • If only that video had a list of actual libraries…

      • I thought people would know if they had a library that was an Eastern Regional library.

        Try https://www.facebook.com/EasternRegional/

Or.. how about the list of Eastern Regional libraries

        https://www.yourlibrary.com.au/locations-hours/

        • Yeah but if they were advertising this offer, then it would have made that video much better to have a list. To be honest I haven't been to a library in years, so I'm not sure of which suburbs in that area have a library. I'll be moving there soon so I don't know right now. I just want to donate some cans.

  • Maybe people should just pay their fees instead, they can probably buy alot more cans

  • do you think the council will do the same for parking and traffic fines?

    • +1

      Councils don't issue traffic fines.

  • +4

33 Libraries of Brisbane City Council can be added to the list. :)

This is OzBargain, you're supposed to give US free stuff…

    • +3

you're supposed to give US free stuff…

Donald Trump would agree with you…

    • +2

You mean like the opportunity to borrow a gazillion books, ebooks, cds, dvds, blurays, magazines, computers (whilst on the premises) for less than $1.

    • Consumerism "thrift" at its finest.

  • +1

Possible to get an amnesty on multiple cards?

  • Good find!

    • +1

It happens at this time each year.
Have been a few years of these Deals for BCC Library amnesty. 2017 2016 etc

jv's complaints are much the same

      • That explains this feeling of Déjà vu I've had this evening…

        • +1

          Never changes much…
How about this jv comment from a year ago This is a charity, not a bargain. It belongs in the forums. (20-)

But I love this reply to jv in 2016 best Looks as though Grinch has come early this year (26+)

        • Maybe it wouldn’t continue happening so much if you considered reporting posts that you believe aren’t a bargain to help moderators identify inappropriate posts?

          • @SlappersOnly: jv likes the attention😉

            • @INFIDEL: Then maybe he should be reported for yearly spam? Though interesting enough, spam is not an option in the commenting guidelines but is for the voting guidelines.

              • @SlappersOnly: I Hide jv's comments😉
And unHide them occasionally - for jv's traditional Christmas rants😂

  • +1

Juat saw it also applies to Fairfield libraries, Sydney

    • What about the Fairfield libraries, Melbourne?

  • I only have 1 fine outstanding. It's Bankstown Library and I lost the book. Late fees are $0.50 a day. Owed around $100 in 2005. Haven't checked since

  • Don't donate food it's a huge waste on resources. Donate money.

    • Don't donate the thing they are asking for?

      • Yes some charities will say donating canned food is better than donating nothing but in actual fact it's not.

      • +1

Food takes storage, distribution & administration - all a drain on their tight budget.
Funding cutbacks by the Federal Government have affected some organisations.
So directing donations to those charities should help most. They can quickly move that money to where it is needed, to have the greatest bebefit.

However Christmas is a time of great need for food to be distributed to those in need.

The council is involving this library patrons in sharing their food. Leaving cash could be a problem for them. It's a noble gesture - of community spirit. It can make their patrons happy & possibly more likely to donate in the future.

(I ran a small local food recovery operation feeding many)

  • I like this giving thing. I give 5c to charity, and the council waves my $5 fine. Giving isn't so bad. I like giving.

    • +1

It's part of an ancient tradition of forgiving small debts at the end of the year - wiping the slate clean.
Predates the Bible, in which it is mentioned. It was practiced in 6th Century BC Athens.
