Printer ink, false advertising?

i use this for my inkjet https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/hp-21-ink-…, it's advertised at 190 pages yet i estimate it's empty at 50 pages at most. how do they calculate this? i've had some of these catridges which probably lasted 20-25 pages, more than $1 per page.

most lasted ~40-50 pages. but some crapped out after 20-25, i know from experience. though it was over a long time, i didn't print all those pages in 1 day. does it dry that quickly? i never print pages with large black spots, only words and some very small logos occasionally.

Inkjet cartridges certainly do not last only 20-25 pages. You're mistaken unless it's the small sample ones that come with printers.

    Here's how it's calculated: http://www.hp.com/pageyield/en-150/articles/inkjetPageYields…

The manufacturer capacity is based on 5% of the page being covered in ink or toner, but if you are printing large shaded areas or more than 4 paragraphs of text, we generally print at more like 10 – 15% coverage.

    Just get a laser

I think I'm still on my starter toner on my Brother laser, a few years after purchase 😂

Can't beat a Brother laser, simple to use and bullet proof.

Mine cost me less than the replacement ink cartridge the OP buys.

        Yep!

        OP see here
Quite often around $40-50 but even for $77 that's 2x inkjet refills and I guarantee you'll get more prints out of its starter toner

        • thanks!!!

    • Yep have had two brother lasers so far, only issue is genuine replacement colour toners cost more than the printer, and I didn't have a good experience with non genuine toner I got off eBay.

  • I noticed my Lexmark toner actually states , that I agree that I understand that the Toner may not last the estimated pages and if I'm not happy about that then send it back before opening.. All ink and toners are based on coverage, you may actually find somewhere where the printer tells you your estimated coverage (usage). Id stick with non genuine Ink and do you research prior to your next purchase. Toner cartridges last longer , but then you have to factor, Drums and Maintenance kits after about 40k and can be expensive

    • except my ink last at most 1/4 of the stated value. i didn't print everything in 1 day, i very rarely print but every 5-6 month i need to replace and it feels like 50c per page at least, sometimes $1 per page.

i turn off my printer, does that dry ink faster? i cant imagine ink drying has more than 70% contribution towards how fast it empties. also hear my printer make "squirt" sounds every time i turn it on, like the sound of water coming out of a doctor's needle, is it squirting ink for some reason?

      • I had an inkjet which often did stupid checks every time it was turned on. This, coupled with the length of time it's sitting and drying could be affecting your result

Most inkjet printers go through a cleaning cycle each time you turn them on. This cleaning cycle wastes a lot of ink, and if you're not printing much, you're probably using more ink in the cleaning cycle than the printing.

    • right. do laser printers do that?

      • +2

        No.

    • This is why you should leave your printer on. You can't turn it off because when you turn it back on it will more than make up for the ink it would have used if it were just left on, even months later. The longer it's left on the less frequent the cleaning cycles are, usually. if you're using generic ink though it won't really matter, but the cleaning cycles are good for the printer.

  • it's advertised at 190 pages

    Well thats what HP claims

    https://store.hp.com/my-en/default/hp-21-black-original-ink-…

  • If you printer more then this ISO standard accounts for you will get less of a yield

    https://www.iso.org/obp/ui/#iso:std:iso-iec:24712:ed-2:v1:en

  • it will have the rated pages at 5% coverage. This is what 5% coverage looks like https://stinkyink-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/content/troublesho…

  • 50 pages seem a little low.

Maybe your printer is the issue?

  • Buy a laser

  • Are you trying to say that sometimes companies lie about how good their products are? Perish the thought!!

Use the printer at work instead.

  • What are you printing…. the transit of Venus with complete black and void A4 pages with a spec of white.
Tell them, show them proof, ring the cartridge people.

It's only an "estimated" yield, they can always fall back on that word "estimated." OEM Inkjet Cartridges have always been a ripoff, dare I say a 'scam'. Not sure about the HP, but before I buy any inkjet printer I check eBay for the availability of cheap bulk third party cartridges. Certain Canon and Brother models usually have a good aftermarket ecosystem. Usually target about $15-$20 for 10 cartridges, buy them in bulk and am set for a couple years. Don't care what the OEM says about voiding warranty or quality or whatever, no way I am paying $38 for 7 ml of ink.

  • Have you tried the ones they sell at harvey norman instead of officeworks? Maybe you will do this next and claim their products are more superior?
