  • Been eyeing this and the a70. Coming form an ancient 6S.
Apart from battery difference and slight memory difference, can anyone recommend one over the other?

    • I was researching about A70 - apparently the fingerprint sensor is so bad that people find the face recognition faster , it is also inaccurate it seems , not sure if the same plagues A80

      • +1

I have an A70, bought from the good guys.

Original software had a poor fingerprint sensor, software updates have fixed it (Currently on the Sep 2019 software version)

I'd recommend the A70 over the A80 for the following reasons:

        https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9646&idPhone2…

Slightly smaller and lighter. The A70 is already a big phone, and because of its size holding it in the hand makes it a bit uncomfortable one handed.

An actual front-facing camera instead of a motorized pop-up rotating main camera module. For me it's moving parts which can attract dust and possible break. May be an unfounded concern, but that's just me.

Bigger battery. 4500 vs 3700 = more longevity down the road.

        A70 has headphone jack

The A80 has a better processor (Snapdragon 730 vs 675 in the A70) but I don't think the difference would relate to any real-world usage unless you're playing super intensive games.

        • Interesting, I was following the fingerprint sensor issue for sometime as I want a large phone without the costs associated with it

          • @otter-raptor: Not going to lie, the fingerprint recognition was terrible on the initial version I had, and being in Australia we get slower software updates than overseas.

But now, it's reliable, it's quick (for me, I haven't used other phones with fingerprint readers regularly)

It's a great large phone, great for media consumption. I don't do hardcore gaming.

The battery and the OLED screen sold it for me. With 128GB I can imagine keeping this phone for 4 years.

Another thing is originally it didn't have a 'night mode' for photography, which it does now. So a lot of the launch reviews criticise the camera for its low light performance. The criticism was valid at the time, but now it has night mode, it's not really. It's not as quick or as good as my partners S10E, but it's still pretty decent.

            • @pernunz: Thank you for the feedback mate, I think that makes it a good buy

      • So it’s a70s slower memory but with sd card slot and better battery or a80s faster memory and metal body also..

        • Slower or lower?

6GB vs 8GB RAM on a phone doesn't really make much difference (to me) but it's all about your usage patterns, and what you want. Either will be a huge upgrade on what you have already.

          • @pernunz: Sorry, poor wording. Lower memory but as it’s marginal it won’t make a difference from where I’m upgrading from.

  • Great for most but lack of expandable storage is a dealbreaker for me…

  • Are there any other phones that have a rotating main camera?

    • +1

ASUS ZenFone 6 is another one I'm aware of, high-end phone & price though.

      • That looks really really good! Damn I want a deal on it now!

  • is it AU stock or import? Samsung doesn't even list A80 on its AU site.

    • Kogan lists it as AU/NZ model although I think its the Global version. Can't find the model number anywhere on Kogan :/

  • How about A70 / A80 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 pro $329?
