In Middle-earth: Shadow of War, nothing will be forgotten!
The sequel to the critically-acclaimed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor – winner of more than 50 industry awards – launched this August, featuring an original story with the return of Talion and Celebrimbor, who must go behind enemy lines to forge an army and turn all of Mordor against the Dark Lord, Sauron.
Set between the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, experience an epic open world brought to life by the award-winning Nemesis System. Players have the now been opportunity to wield a new Ring of Power and confront the deadliest of enemies, including Sauron and his Nazgul, in a monumental battle for Middle-earth. The robust personalization tool used in Shadow of Mordor has been applied to the entire world! Environments and characters are all shaped by the player actions and decisions, creating a personal world unique to every gameplay experience.
GAMEPLAY
Middle-earth: Shadow of War follows from its predecessor, it is an action role-playing game set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. The player is once again given the chance to control the game's protagonist, Talion, who has several combat abilities from his training as a Ranger of Gondor - and also has unique abilities provided by the spirit of the elf lord Celebrimbor, with whom he shares his body. The player has the ability to complete various missions using their combines abilities, typically aimed to disrupt the armies of Sauron.
The game includes main quests that drive the game's narrative, and numerous optional quests that can help the player boost Talion's abilities and Followers via the game's "Nemesis System". In contrast to the previous game, which was more of a hack and slash, the sequel will have an action role-playing approach, creating a more personalized experience for each player. It will also feature dynamic weather system as well as day-night cycle which affects the gameplay and enemy behavior.
Overlords are in charge of Nemesis Fortresses; huge castles that players can lay siege to by using their own hierarchy of orc followers, allowing them to lead their army into battle in order to seize forts. By gathering intel or assassinating Warchiefs, players can breach the walls of even the most powerful fortresses. Once the walls of a fortress have been breached, there are a whole new set of obstacles for users to battle through – be it collecting ‘King of the Hill’ inspired victory points or pushing forwards to the ultimate showdown with the fortress’ overlord. Successful sieges bring their own special rewards!
EMBRACE THE NEMESIS
The Nemesis System expands upon its introduction in Shadow of Mordor to apply to a larger part of the world, including other characters called Followers that behave by how the player has interacted with them. Players will also be able to transfer their top Nemesis and their most loyal follower from Shadow of Mordor into Shadow of War.
Alongside the expanded Nemesis system, Shadow of War improves the RPG elements that provided a small-but-sturdy base for the original’s combat. Skill trees return, but they now offer more customization, and unlocked skills can be altered with a modifier.
TRAVEL IN STYLE
Talion isn't just restricted to the ground for his new adventure. Take to the skies on your very own Drake dragon and attack enemies in brutal aerial attacks, as well as the return of the Graugs and Caragors. Talion can even summon beasts to help him, including spiders and rodent-like Ghuls. Travelling through the open world is made more challenging with outposts and camps giving players the opportunity to battle lower-ranked orcs, preventing them from sounding the alarm and making your journey through Middle Earth much easier.
LOOT BOXES
Middle-earth: Shadow of War also features loot boxes, which are split into different categories including Loot Chests, War Chests, and Boosts. They contain weapons and armor, orcs, and XP boosts, respectively. In-game ‘Mirian’ currency can be obtained by killing Treasure Orcs, finding hidden stashes, or destroying specific items and the premium gold currency is awarded at specific story milestones.
Find valuable ‘Legendary’ warriors in your loot boxes to help conquer fortresses and, once they are in your control, defend them against fellow players.
PLAY ONLINE
The new Social Conquest mode allows players to use an orc army to maintain control of online fortresses. Players can battle it out with other users, assaulting forts and winning rewards based on the length of the siege. Social Conquest features both friendly and ranked modes, and any orcs lost during a ranked game will be permanently killed and unable to return to the main campaign – so choose your warriors wisely!
