If you want more data for 6 months, you better off getting few discounted starter pack

  • Whats the cheapest data sim 12 month deal on the telstra network?

Its for an emergency/backup phone only

    Any clues appreciated

    • +4

I recommend boost 12moths sim for $150($135 frequently miscounted).
Is in include 80GB of data and unlimited calls and some international calls.

      • +1

Just wonder if this kit can be activated on a prepaid broadband plan, under which the $150 will give you 40GB over 12 months (less data but valid for longer).

    • +4

Buy an Aldi sim for $5 if its only for backup. Lasts a year. That's what I do.

      • +1

Hard to beat that. Do you turn data off?

        • +3

Yep, good call. In a smartphone if the Auto Update is on for play store, your $5 is gone in seconds as soon as you update a few Apps, true, happened to me some years ago when still new to smartphones lol.

Is there any way to take advantage of these kind of deals if you already have a telstra number? Or do you have say port to another provider and then port back.

    • I did this last week.
      1. Buy this sim and call telstra
      2. they'll ask you to activate this new sim and then
      3. they'll port your number to this sim

      • Never heard of this before till now. The only time you can go from Telstra to this Telstra Sim Starter Pack is if you are on a Telstra Postpaid plan switching over to Telstra Prepaid?

Edit: I read below that's exactly what you did,….twice lol.

  • Would it be possible to purchase two of these and use them back to back for a year?
I imagine there would be some kind of expiry or possibly 'new customer' rule in place.

    • +1

      You can't.
These are only for new/porting numbers.

For any Telstra rep in the house - Would be great if Telstra will allow for that in the future..

      • Thanks for clarifying!

        • +1

No worries. Also see the thread below.

I still think it's impossible to use the starter kit as a straight forward recharge for an existing number. However, you may be able to do what's written below, though I would guess YMMV..

  • +1

Can you transfer your existing Telstra number across? Sorry for the noob question.

    • +1

Best practice is to port out and then port back with this $100 Sim card

    • +2

Yes you can. I've done that no need to port out and port in. Buy this sim and call telstra and ask them to port your number to this sim. They'll ask you to activate this first

      • +1

You can't recharge an existing one, you will need to go through several processes (which I guess will not be as easy) to do that, see here:

Manojkbanga, could you explain exactly how it worked, as it seems as if you were either lucky or you found a loophole in their system?

        • +3

          excuse my English

i made it work 2 times, me and gf.
so i bought 2 of these pack at 120 p/p.
then i called telstra (we were on postpaid plan 59 and 49 per month) told them want to move to this new sim.

for me the guy did everything on his side ( he said what he did is converted my number from post paid to prepaid and using my new sim number he recharged my number with $120 and disabled my new sim )

for my gf they told her to put new sim card in her phone and then give them call to transfer her old telstra postpaid number to new prepaid with new sim (make sure you call them and tell them that you've bought sim kit of this value not just a sim )

hope this make sense, for me it was way easier that how i was able to wright here.

@Manojkbanga: Got the SIM, will try this first. We are doing similar going from postpaid to prepaid.

          • @Manojkbanga: Thanks for proving this info!

Great that it worked for you. I think they might be more lenient when moving from post to pre paid, as you had to buy some sort of kit from them for that. I'm still under the impression that this might be different from trying to top-up an existing Telstra pre-paid number with a pre-paid kit.

It would be great if someone who's affiliated with Telstra could clarify that.

            • @reg401: Why not call telstra and ask them that you bought this sim kit online.(but don't buy it) It's 120 at telstra website.
And ask it's on the way so how can you move to that. They'll never tell you to port out and port in. 99% they'll ask you to give them the call when you get the sim kit. Ask them explain what will happen then. And if you agree then go buy from anywhere and call them back :)

              • @Manojkbanga: I'll probably do that when I get closer to the end of my current package. They'll have more sales, so no rush for me. At this point, it's just pure interest, and perhaps, if someone does answer, it could help others.

i just popped into woolworths to buy - they didnt have it - i also checked woolworths current catalogue - couldnt find it

op where did you see this?

    • +2

      it was in Telco Catalogue

      • thanks praveenars

      • What is "Telco Catalogue" ? Is it from Woolworths?

  • my current plan doesn't run out for another 5 months. what is the activation time for this sim?

    • +3

      • +1

        Awesome, thanks for the info

  • +1

here is the link to the catalogue for those who will need instore

    • It says NSW Telco, does that exclude other states ?

      • +3

Bought mine from Woollies QV in Melbourne CBD. No price on it, you just had to know. Scanned OK at the till.

        • Hahaha,…OzBargainers usually "know" lol.

$95 if purchased with 5% off Wish gift card

    • Getting Wish gift card from AGL Rewards for this!

    • Does Cashrewards still do 5% off Wish gift cards?
      Would make this under $16/month.

      • +1

        Yep!

  • I assume those international calls dont include calls to mobiles?

Calls to Philippines is great, but almost no-one has a land line there.

    • +2

It include mobile numbers. I know since I have the same plan.

      • +1

And with that user name you like their favorite chicken dish,…so do I lol

  • Original poster characterises this as "10 Gb data per month" but is this not a little misleading, wouldn't it be possible to blow/burn through that data in a shorter time, then being left with zero data for the remaining months, i.e. it is not actually rationed out in monthly parcels, or am I wrong?

    • You are right, you could gorge on the first month and famine for the rest. However, unless I'm mistaken, you can top these things up with additional data packs. Someone want to jump in here?

  • +2

I think it is more than reasonable to take a 6th month plan and divide the total data by 6. You could make your argument for monthly pre-paid plans too. If you are on a 10GB monthly prepaid plan and use all of the data in 2 days etc.

  • Can I transfer my current Telstra number to this?

    • If you are on Telstra Postpaid, then call Telstra after you buy this pack and they will help you through process step by step,…see comments above by "Manojkbanger."

If your on Telstra Prepaid, out of luck, unless you call Telstra before you buy this pack and get lucky.

  • +1

    Is it Nepal call unlimited?

    • +1

      Yes.

      • Link?

        • +1

I've checked with Telstra and have been using a SIM for a while.

  • Can we change to esim ?

  • $100 is the normal price for Boost and it’s currently $90. Boost includes 600 minutes to an additional 35 countries. Telstra has data rollover. Boost usee the same Telstra Retail network.

  • Just to confirm that you can top this up even if your on Telstra Pre paid.

I tried it and worked. They just told me to give the sim number of the starter pack , activated it and transferred credit onto my current Telstra pre paid number.

I basically called them on Telstra pre paid customer service number and got it done and you could also chat to them from the Telstra app.

  • anyone lese having massive problems porting their number to telstra? ive been trying since the 28th nov - no luck - have tried online and on the phone - have previously ported a few times with other carriers without a problem so i'm at a loss as to what's wrong here

does anyone know if there is a way of cancelling this and getting a refund???

  • We managed to port from Telstra postpaid to Telstra prepaid with this. They moved us on to a $5 prepaid SIM, (at no cost) then ported our number to this and applied the 6 month card amount. It was a bit of a palaver but they got there in the end. It took us two phone calls, one to get the prepaid setup and the other to apply the card, once the prepaid was in place.
