  • Already using LG G6, is this better?

    • +2

I went from the g6 to this, but only because the g6 battery was getting tired. Was a good upgrade anyway. Better camera, wider screen and oled. $399 is the fair market price now though. You'd be crazy to pay any more.

    • +3

It has a better AMOLED screen than the IPS on the G6.
The Snapdragon 835 CPU is a fair bit faster than the previous generation 821 in the G6.
The camera in the v30 is higher resolution with better glass element optics.
The 128GB storage in the v30+ is more than the G6.

Finally, the more premium build of the v30 feels nicer in the hand, and less top heavy (I have owned both).

    • +2

@superforever - did you see this deal for the G7? Same price.

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/498264

      • Thanks, if not that much better I may just leave it. G6 so far OK just a bit slow sometime.

        • +1

If you want to upgrade, I would at least go G7 (Snapdragon 845) or better. The main benefit of V30+ over G7 is no notch, but honestly, you will get used to the notch quite quickly. V30+'s Snapdragon 835 lacks proper HDR decoding so when playback youTube HDR contents, you won't get smooth playback for 1080p HDR (720p HDR is okay). Also, despite it being 1440p display, youTube app seems to only allow it to go 1080p. You can download a different / customised youTube app which enables 1440p and gets rid of the HDR format (so 1440p playback is smooth, but you lose HDR). The OLED panel isn't that good (it seems to retain image a bit when you first power up the device or wake it up - it does go away).

        • I am in the same boat, have a G6 and need an upgrade due to it slowing down. Figured for around the same price I would at least try and get the G7 - although also looking at Google phones or OnePlus.

    • Yes it is.

    • -2

Ignore anyone praising the v30+ screen. They must be wearing tinted glasses. The screen usually has issues of too much yellow. One of the worst screens I've ever seen, despite being IPS!

There is an element of screen lotto, but the yellow problem is insanely common.

  • -7

It is slow and the battery is not that great.

    • Why the neg?!

    Still loving my v30+
I temporarily tried a s10e with the JBHiFi Telstra deal, but apart from the camera which was better (especially the selfie which is bad on the v30), the CPU was supposed to be faster, but it ran hot. Everything else seemed a step down/sideways, so sprung for a new battery and returned to the v30+ after a day or so.

My almost 2yo phone now rocking a new battery from LG for $88 means unfortunately I wont be buying this time (I think).

Wide and normal rear cameras (Improve with GCam)
    Wireless charging
    Fast fingerprint on back
    Great quality haptic/vibration system
    Weight less than 160g
    Fast UFS storage
Audio jack with DAC for outstanding clarity on good quality headphones
    Band 28
    NFC
    Australian warranty
    Unlockable bootloader
    Good battery life
.. For $399 is still a bargain IMO.

    • Was that price of just the battery? Or the price plus installation

      • The $88 was all up, for the battery installed by LG service in Auburn, and they said it would keep its water resistance.
It took about an hour and $88 included GST on the invoice.

    • I have both phones and S10e is better (my S10e is Snapdragon 855 version with dual SIMs).

The screen is better on S10e. Not only that, SD835 struggles with youTube HDR playback on V30+. Try playing a 1080p HDR youTube video. Not only that, the default youTube app only allows up to 1080p on V30+ for some reason (V30+ has a 1440p screen). You need a hacked version of youTube to do 1440p. The OLED screen quality is not as good as S10e and it seems to have longer than usual image retention (initially I thought the OLED screen suffered from burn-in issue). It annoys me because it happens regularly (every cold boot or wake up from deep sleep) and I can see the residual retained old image for a second or so before it disappears.

The front facing camera needs gcam, otherwise the default camera app for front cam is subpar. Snapdragon 855 is definitely faster. There is no contest there. S10e's WiFi 6 support could be handy later on.

I get the stylish curve edges of V30+ and it is good that the screen portion is flat. However, due to the curves, you need a screen protector that has the curve bits. I tried PET ones - they don't cover the entire screen portion. Currently using a tempered glass one, but not that good. S10e - Samsung put the screen protector in already and it is a flat screen.

The audio DAC on V30+ definitely is great. However, any phone with OLED should playback HDR video smoothly. It is just disappointing that V30+ can only play 720p HDR smoothly. Snapdragon 845 based phones don't have youTube HDR playback issue.

Not on mine. HDR 1080p plays fine. I can playback at 1440p60 no problem. I don’t know what to tell you. Maybe you have some kind of glitch or firmware conflict?

        • Same. Dunno what he's on about, has to be some kind of app conflict somewhere.

      • Mine also plays 1440p no problem. Did you set the display resolution to max? I noticed when I first got my V30 it was default to a mid point, probably 1080p in the interest of longer battery life but since I put it to max it's stayed there.

  • Amazing phone, got it a few months ago. Camera is incredible and if you are into high fidelity music then the Quad-DAC makes listening through good headphones even better :)

    • +2

I've got one and for me the camera leaves much to be desired. Apart from that, it's a pretty solid phone.

      • with Gcam ?

        • +1

Gcam helps, but the front cam lens is simply subpar. Back camera lenses, while the wide angle lens is handy, both lenses and sensors are 2017 based so when you compared them to 2018 and 2019, obviously you can see a gap in quality.

  • +1

Using one for 1 yr still going strong with battery and apps recently got updated

  • +4

JB is reluctant to drop the price to sub $350 which in theory it should be as the new year is approaching.
I will wait a little bit longer for a better bargain then.

    • +1

I'd wait a bit until it drops to $299 at the end of this year, or buy note 10 if it's on special

      • Yeah true. Let's wait for the deal to pop up then.

  • +3

Waiting for the day it drops even lower than 399 at JB.

  • +2

Love mine from the last sale. I'm using gcam with it, which improves the photo quality alot. Also works well with dual sims too.

  • +6

I feel this should be cheaper than $399 now … I own the phone and it is great but I bought it for this price in the beginning of the year. Phones don't change that much anymore and the differences getting smaller and smaller … so they hold value longer. Maybe not a bad thing.

  • +3

THE best bang for buck phone under 500 period.

    • wouldn't that be the xiaomi 9t pro?????

      • +2

You have a link to the sub 500 Xiaomi 9t pro?

        • +1

Probably thinking of the AE deal that never was.

      • Where can I get the 9T pro for under 500?

        • -1

At the moment you can't, but they are regularly $530 or so.

      • -1

arguably this is better but the xiaomi is very close, not to mention this is 400 hundy the xiaomi is like 530

        • +1

Released in 2017, can only upgrade to oreo 8.0.. worse camera, cpu, memory. Has some advantages, but not sure it's better than the xiaomi.

          • +2

@xmail: I have a V30+. I'm running Pie 9.0 . The camera is great, photos look fantastic (bar the selfie, which is not a problem for me). Internal storage is 80% free. The apps I run work nicely and are responsive.

I don't know if it's better than the xiaomi, but I'm certain that I don't care.

  • Just be aware the power/screen lock button is on the back face of the phone.
I find this first world problem a slight nuisance as you have to flip the phone to have access to it or takes that little bit longer to lock the phone.

    • +3

Can unlock by double tapping the screen. Needs pin/etc this way as no fingerprint scanner on screen.
Can lock by double tapping the top status bar.

      • +1

        Yep, it's called KnockON.

You can also turn off the screen by double tapping an empty part of the home screen. Super useful! I use it all the time.

      • Can also use face unlock so you don't have to put in a pin/pattern etc.

I think a lot of the "problems" people have with LG's comes from their lack of experience with them. Ive used them for 7-8 years now and find them a lot more user friendly than say a Samsung.

    • +1

This feature is what i will miss if i ever do upgrade to the V40 from my V20.

    • Yep - where my finger is when I pick it up or hold it. I can pick up and unlock my phone on one motion, rather than stabbing at the screen. I'd find a front based scanner annoying as I'd have to use both hands to unlock it, one to hold the phone and the other to use the sensor.

      • +2

Or you can just scan your thumb.

  • nice deal

  • I have a LG G7 waiting for me to pickup tomorrow.

Any advice on this vs LG G7. It's for my mum

    • +2

G7 is better as it’s LCD, don’t have to deal with burn in, this is a huge plus as old people tend to change phone less frequently and lcd display would ensure burn in would not appear especially for people whom are slow user with images that are static like keyboard and ensure longevity. Additionally don’t have screen flickering due to slow response by led which may cause headaches

      • Thank you friend!

      • I assume that'd be PWM flickering to control brightness. OLED have stupid fast pixel response compared to other screen tech.

        • Who told you that one? Lcd doesn’t have any, while oled does. you can see all the test done online showing this

          • @Toughcookie: If you're talking about flickering, as I said, it's due to the way the screens control brightness, by switching on and off. OLED pixel response is far beyond what any LCD based screen can achieve.

As an aside, the LCD in the G7 also uses PWM, but that's at over 1000Hz, while the V30 is in the order of 200-250Hz.

            • @TheContact: In my option oled pixel is better in terms of colour but response is a definite no for me oled also has black smear in low brightness, it’s most noticeable in reddit app dark mode it’s annoying and all panels have it.

              • @Toughcookie: https://www.blurbusters.com/faq/oled-motion-blur/

It's not actually a factor of response times. OLEDs are practically instantaneous.

                • @TheContact: Had a read and that article basically says lcd is better than oled in response. But then ehh

                  • +1

@Toughcookie: OLEDs have a much faster response time. However, response time and refresh rate aren't the same. An OLED display works without a backlight, more power efficient and thinner. An OLED display generally have picture quality.

While IPS doesn't suffer from colour shift like OLED, IPS does struggle with contrast ratio as it needs a strong backlight. Backlight uniformity varies from IPS panel to IPS panel. The G7's IPS is above average for an IPS display (whereas V30+ is below average for an OLED display). That said, when viewing HDR contents, V30+'s OLED display still shows more details (have better colour accuracy) than G7's IPS. IPS does suffer from contrast shift.

As much as I like IPS, when it comes to viewing videos and photos, OLED is still superior. Reading text, I might prefer IPS (as OLEDs often use pentile - somewhat cheating in resolution).

V30+'s OLED is disappointing (so much so that personally I prefer G7's IPS overall - partially because V30+ struggles with HDR decoding). However, if you looked at Samsung's OLED or Apple's OLED (which is also made by Samsung), those are definitely impressive.

    • It is mixed to be honest. The IPS on G7 is nice and does not suffer from colour shift and brighter. V30+'s screen has a bit of image retention issue (kinda like burn-in but does go away). G7's CPU is faster and you won't have issue with youTube with HDR or 1440p mode.

However, G7's screen width is narrower and I think it has a higher DPI. Higher DPI is good for young people, but not necessary better for older people. Texts appear bigger on V30+, but G7 you see a bit more vertical Web page / content. Also the V30+ has 128GB storage space (compared to 64GB for G7). G7's front cam is better (unlike V30+'s front cam - which is really subpar).

That's my dilemma. G7 is better overall and I actually prefer the screen on G7. However, for parents, larger texts help. You can adjust the text scaling, but at the same setting, the text is bigger on V30+.

I believe G7 is a better choice. I think the dedicated power button is easier for parents (rather than back button with fingerprint reader). You do have double taps on/off on both phones.

Honestly, ideally I prefer to get a phone that's even better than G7 for parents.

  • This or the V40…. Decisions decisions…

    • If you can afford V40, then V40 of course.

  • I’m looking this comparing to asus zenfone 5z. Is this much better deal being cheaper?

  • +1

I have this phone. Tip get cover ASAP, damn trackpants.
I wouldn't recommend it, phone gets slow and battery life poor after six months use.
Would think Samsung, Google or Xiaomi phone to be better.
NFC certainly handy for payments and myki fares. As well headphone jack.

    • +4

I often wonder whether we do the battery a disservice by regularly using the rapid charger with it.
Generally, I've been slow charging the phone by using my laptop USB port. Very rarely use the rapid charger.
Will be interesting to see how well the battery holds up as a result. So far so good.

      • That's interesting but they give us the fast charge power point with phone.

I imagined best to use what comes with phone.

Though I guess if you wanna charge slowly over night and that sustains battery, another option.

I remember staff from Dick Smith informing me if the battery life falls within warranty you can bring the phone back. I haven't tried that yet. Have small crack on bottom of phone so unsure if they would progress with battery claim.

      • +1

I have done a lot of research on this and you are correct, fast charging does speed up degradation of the battery life. Heat is the biggest killer for modern phone batteries and fast charging causes the battery to heat up more than slow charging.

Basics tips to prolong battery life:
        1) use a slow charger whenever possible
        2) don't let battery drop below 20%
        3) only charge your battery to 80%
        4) remove the case while charging (to reduce heat build up)

Following these tips should ensure your battery lasts many years.

        • I'd like to see who's going to be that diligent to keep track of dropping battery to 20% and then recharging it to 80%. Those with ocd maybe, most others will do just like I do, whenever. My Huawei Y550 that was bought so many years ago is still holding fine. Sure the battery isn't good as it was when it was new, but still holding.

          • +1

@bargainparker: Maybe I do have a bit of OCD, haha. I know it's impossible to follow all those steps all the time, but if you understand the basic principles, you can at least try. I like to live by the motto "if you look after your stuff, it will look after you". But each to their own.

      • +2

Battery life has more to do with how often you use your phone to be honest.
Also, use the original charger and cable if you can.

Your laptop is doing rapid charge at a much higher voltage compared to the phone. If what you stated is true, then you are shortening your laptop's battery life to prolong your mobile phone's battery life.

      • +2

Just so you know, the V30, and the successive LG phone line have some new adaptive battery technology built-in. It’s called QNOVA. It improves longevity and also the health of the battery by 100x:

        https://qnovo.com/116-qnovo-adaptive-charging-lg-v30-smartph…

You can read the article yourself, but the important stuff is:

You, the consumer, do not have to worry whether your usage might hurt the battery. You don’t have to worry about fast charging because it might damage the battery. You don’t have to worry about charging to less than full because it helps the battery’s longevity. None of these should be your concerns and none should keep you thinking about the battery. Qnovo’s adaptive charging takes care of these battery issues in the background, and gives you a healthy battery with the best user experience.

I've stared to look at new phones and have got it down to three; the LG V30, LG G7 or a refurb Galaxy note 8 all can be got for $399. I am leaning toward the note 8, but think the V30 might be the better choice. Camera image quality is and large screen size are the two main considerations.
    Your opinions would be appreciated.

    • I've had a LG V30+ for the past 2 or so years and it's been amazing. I purchased it at launch and I've personally never had any issues. I also tossed up the Note 8 at the time, but the V30 has larger internal storage and finger print scanner is in the middle, which was a must for me. Rear wide angle camera is awesome, front facing though, is lacking a lot.

Currently on Android 9 (can't remember what it's name is) and is still working fine for me (no lag/slow downs).

      • Is lg still pushing out updates for this phone?

    • i have g7. dont get it

    • I'd probably take the G7 over the V30 if camera quality is the top of your list. Front cam on the V30 is pretty average at best.

  • Am I able to buy this online tomorrow, or is it an in-store only deal?

Bought this phone…Anybody knows where i can get a good case and screen protector?

Can't seem to find a physical store that sells the case for this model.

    • I don't have a screen protector myself, and so far, happy not to use one.

Definitely wanted a case, though. The phone is too thin, and the all glass body is a worry if the phone has a decent knock.

Bought this case from Amazon. Pretty happy with it.

      • That's the exact same case i bought back in July and it's great.
