I would recommend getting the 3rd gen iPad Air 64GB instead: double the memory and a much better device overall for an extra $163 (@Wireless1, based on eBay’s 15% off). Shipping was free for me (space grey) although I’m not an eBay plus member.
How is it a much better device?
Just in case your Google doesn’t work: they’re pretty much the same size yet the Air has a bigger screen (smaller bezels) and it’s lighter. Speaking of the Air’s screen, it’s a True Tone laminated display which gives you better colours. It has a better FaceTime camera (7 vs 1.2Mp, huge difference) and Bluetooth 5.0. Then it’s the chip, A12 vs A10 (should give you 2 more years of iPadOS support). Did I mention you also get double the storage?

@massafiri: It’s how marketing works. They can say there are iPads ‘from’ $499 whereas most people will be going for the next model up. Having said that, it’s still a perfectly fine device, but just not that future proof in my opinion.
