The hole in the ozone is mending. I read somewhere that it's because hairspray companies were forced to change ingredients.

For sunscreen, 50+ is 50+, but 30+ is enough (limited benefit of going beyond that). And we still need to wear it despite no ozone layer hole.

        • Ah that's good to know

So there was a global problem that affected everyone, people mentioned it, companies changed and things got better.

I don't get how that makes sense

        • +3

Yeah, CFCs (and others) were banned in the late 80s due to the concern of ozone depletion in the Montreal Protocol. Ozone layer is still depleted, but has been recovering since the 2000s.

Similar thing with sulfur emissions. Governments saw a problem (acid rain) and scientist said it was caused by sulfur dioxide (and nitrogen oxide) emissions. Governments instituted a cap and trade system to limit emissions. Emissions dropped, and so acid rain is much more rare.

To be fair, these are somewhat more localised than climate change, but it shows that governments used to believe scientists and fix things if they wanted to.

Sky News - if you don't like it, you don't have to pay for it.

ABC - if you don't like it, you have to pay for it.

    • +1

It'd be nice if the ABC had the appropriate budget so they could attract talent from all walks of life at rates of pay similar to commercial broadcasters, rather than having to rely on lefties who are happy to take a pay cut to further advance the cause of public broadcasting and hence contributing to perceived bias.

      It's a self-fulfilling prophecy - cut the ABC's budget, talented centrist/right-wing staff leave = more left-wing opinion and analysis.

      • +2

TIL that 1.5 billion dollars a year isn't appropriate.

        • +1

$1.05 billion. I'm pretty sure they'd be happy with $1.5 billion though.

      • +5

Hahaha… lack of money is the reason for ABC's bias.

At least you admitted they were biased, which is more than most left-wing ABC supporters.

        • I don't watch much TV, which shows are biased?

Abc was always anti establishment wasn't it, but it was through their comedy programs.

          Is it all editorials now?

          • +2

@iamhurtin: All the political shows, but the bias has even seeped into straight news. The non-news programming is no better, lookup their 2020 show lineup.

The left are the establishment now, regardless of whether they hold government or not, they have a stranglehold on culture and its institutions.

            • +1

              @rokufan: I knew it!

Soon as as they put that "no right turn" sign at the end of my street
I knew the left had won the war.

              What can we do though?

              How do we fight back?

  • +5

You couldn't pay me to listen to the gasbags on Sky News. After Dark is slipping into the news bulletins - that's why many of their long-time newsreaders left recently. My god the opinion/analysis shows are hair-tearingly awful.

  • +4

Free propaganda is not a deal.

    • -2

How about the propaganda you pay for in the ABC? Is that a deal?

      • -2

To pay for something is voluntary, ie. choice.

The ABC is funded by legal compulsion, ie. taxes.

  • +4

Sky News - because opinions matter more than facts.

    • *corruption matters more than facts

    • Same can be said for most news organisations

  • +6

It's amazing that people hate on the ABC. The ABC is left leaning, not by design, but purely because they are well researched and fact based. When you take that approach often you end up on the left side.

Fyi I identify as balanced politically and I've voted for both major political parties

    • +2

It is left-wing by design (kudos for admitting the obvious left-wing bias, many don't). Not initially, but over time, like hires like. Read Gerald Henderson, who appears on the ABC, about his description of how the ABC operates with independent and unaccountable "soviets" (units) as he calls them.

"The truth is left-wing", is something a left-winger would say, not a centrist.

    • yeah….fact based is not left or right leaning.
      Facts are facts.

      • +1

Oh people can come up with statistics to prove anything puffy . Forfty percent of all people know that.

  • +3

the amount of anti-Murdoch, tin foil hat conspiracy comments in this deal is hilarious!

  • +3

I have a major problem with the misinformation broadcast on this "news" channel.

    • Then don't watch it. Problem solved.

    • +1

Least you're not forced to pay for it (at gunpoint mind you, which is what will eventually happen to you if you don't pay your taxes).

  • +2

I don't really read or watch the news very much, but a quick google indicates that ABC is "High Quality" and "Center", and Sky "Mixed Quality" and "Leans Right".

      According to who?

The Age, ABC, SBS are all clearly left leaning. As I posted earlier, just count the number of articles for/against the hot button topics. The Age had about 3-4 anti-Trump articles on their home page every day for his first 2 years in office.

      • +2

Um, but isn't that cause trump does bad things every day he is in office

        • That depends on your views and what news you read.

My point is - at least know which side you get your info from (see above post).

          • +1

@MementoMori: Seriously, it matters who covers what trump says and does?

It could be scribbled on the wall above the stall I found your sister's number in, he is what he is.

            • +2

              @iamhurtin:

stall I found your sister's number in

              That's not necessary.

            • +1

              @iamhurtin: Yes, that's what I said.

Read leftist news and you'll think he's a fool.

Read something like this and you might have a more balanced view - https://www.whitehouse.gov/trump-administration-accomplishme…

To see if you have a balanced view of a topic try to argue it's opposite. For example, see if you can thin of 5 positive qualities of Trump.

Surely there must be something considering he non-politician who was voted in as President on his first run. See if you can or if you have a emotionally childish NPC reaction like 'Nothing! Cheeto Hitler is a big bad meanie' and think that ~50% of the US are just not as 'educated' as you.

Love him or hate him he's smarter than you think considering he pulled that off.

              • -2

@MementoMori: Dude, if you're happy in your fantasy world that's cool.

But at least feel some guilt or something.

                • @iamhurtin: Actually trying to help you… but OK.

                  • -2

@MementoMori: Um, how are you. Helping me?

It's people like you who are making me want to commit suicide

      • According to who?

Come to think of it, I guess this is relative to whichever organization created this chart. I found it here:
        https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/8vgokb/australia…

just count the number of articles for/against the hot button topics

As I said, I don't really watch or read the news unless someone links me an article, but I'll take your word for it.

I've only seen Sky news at airport lounges, and it just seemed to be reporting facts about banks/businesses, didn't seem particularly biased to me.

        • middle of the day sky news is ok but their opinion pieces (bolt, kenny) are hard right which is mixed in with actual journalism.

The biggest issue is this partisan murdoch venture is being pushed into transit systems, replacing abc in regional areas due to libnat funding cuts. ABC is the most trusted news source in the country has had countless stats saying its unbias yet that is not good enough for the big end of corruption.

    • That chart would be accurate if you shifted everything in the center one column to the left. Of course such a matrix depends entirely on the bias of the author.

      • +1

Yes, I agree. Shift one left.

  • +6

Free propaganda is not a deal

  • -1

    Thanks OP

  • +3

Kenny and bolt and murdoch. yeah nah, all corrupt to the core.

    Aren't we suffering enough!
