I came to comment the exact same thing - chickens have done very well for themselves in earning a discriminatory adjective of Free Range. We don't really give two shits about other animal products and the quality of their animal treatment.
Working in the chicken industry, I have been told that chickens generally don't even like going outside - they generally just stick to the shed where they are comfortable. It's only the arbitrary classification that requires giving them space.
Not saying it's not available, I'm saying people don't care as much.
@pdtmathieson: I do. Free range or not at all.
@try2bhelpful: What about their brothers who are minced up or gassed at a day old?
What about the fact that all the hens will become nuggets when they're 2 years old, never having the freedom of a natural social setting, being denied sexual and maternal opportunity, cooped up with 10000 other females? That all egg laying hens today are the product of selection processes that make them depleted and frail by the time they're only a couple of years old?
@fantombloo: What about them?
I'll add to weeeel…
They like to roam, but they are smart. Why would they roam in this climate where at any corner a bushfire can fry them in a jiffy and summer heat make them look like prunes.
If they prayed and opposed same sex marriage, then they will be safe from the bushfires, my mate Israel Folou told me…
@pdtmathieson: Nah, they learned from german penguins
@pdtmathieson: He’s priceless isn’t he. The gift that just keeps giving to atheists.

Free-range chickens are no better than barn chickens.
Your linked article doesn't really say that.
Also, you are the only one here talking about barn chickens.
They don't like to roam in open areas. They much prefer cover. I think the article appropriately reflected my comment. Wheeeel idiot.
A real idiot would one someone making wild extrapolations based on a single metric.
You might have other data but that article is only about measuring stress via hormones found in eggs and no broad conclusion similar to yours was drawn.
@bargainpersona: Well done you've looked into it. The free-range hype is bizarre.
You had me at "bacon"
No I'll be getting the cheap caged eggs :)
Good price for a good breakfast :D
hmm a range of free eggs ? sounds legit.
Is this Australian Bacon?
Bacon is rarely "Australian", especially cheap bacon.
At best it'll say 10-20% Australian ingredients - which means foreign meat but cured with true blue Australian salt water.
or just buy both like my self, I dont think you'd be buying bacon in the first place if you cared about animal treament. Pigs are not only smart, but get treatment just as bad as chickens and cows in industrial farming
