I don't give Google enough data, I think I should get these to make sure they get everything. 😬

    • Or to keep your YouTube account.

Saw the new version in a catalogue.
    Google Nest WiFi:

  • Any deal for Orbi?

I'm an absolute Dumbo when it comes to networking but I have a WiFi router with 4G SIM in it at moment from Huawei.

Can I use the new Nest WiFi with it, or do I need an actual wired broadband modem to connect to it rather than WiFi only

    • +1

This is a mesh system which is designed to extend your network coverage. You’ll still need your modem that you put your 4G sim into, and connect this to the modem.

  • What range does a single one have?

I grabbed a 3 pack for pickup to go with the three I have already also from Good Guys, need to go upstairs and out to media room instead of 3 wifi networks I have
Great units for horizontal range and mesh networking, not so good as they make out floor to floor (through concrete)
Recently found out they do LAN backhaul (which new Nest does not)
If you don’t have voice control and poor wifi get the Nest, otherwise save a few $$$

Backhaul is great. I have a switch connected to each of mine, makes a noticeable difference when copying large files.

      • I used to live in an apartment with wired ethernet in each room, and then when I moved, I was left wondering how to connect all my devices and switches in a way which kept things stable/reliable without hogging the wireless (eg my TV/streaming device/NAS) and then using Google Wifi pucks and switches, I've managed to make my network feel almost entirely wired. Unfortunately the one puck next to the horribly located telephone/NBN connection is on it's own, the rest of my key devices are all on the one puck so they feel great for local transfers.

        • Since you are entirely on WiFi, why not just use wifi in all the devices?

          • @onlinepred: More devices on wifi slows it down as they take the limited bandwidth. And some devices have crap (slow and or unstable) wifi either due to the modules they have or just their placement eg in my home entertainment unit. Using a network switch seems to alleviate a lot of this.

            • @jace88: It's just the main purpose of the Google mesh system is to deal with many devices over WiFi. Literally the purpose. You would have to have loads of decided streaming 4k on a single pick to hit any issues. In the end you are still relying on WiFi, just missing or on devices management through Google.

              I do understand though.

              • @onlinepred: My issue is more the reach (hence why I wanted mesh) and the wifi in the other devices. Even the Apple TV isn’t stable all the time and by using Ethernet I avoid all those potential issues with wifi. I’m sure it’ll work fine if I use wifi for most of the time but this alleviates it.
