Budget All-Rounder Laptop + Light 3D Modelling

Looking to get my dad a laptop for his retirement - would appreciate any recommendations and general advice as I'm lost.

Use case is general browsing, note taking, probably occasional light 3-D modelling applications (I understand this may make graphics a consideration but I'm not sure what to look for - think AutoCAD 3D). Will be used at home, in the garage, travelling.

I'm open to suggestions on budget but I'm initially thinking 500 to 1500 (big range I know). Am willing to spend more or less depending where the value lies.

Important
  • Graphics
  • Somewhat future-proof
  • Fast boot
  • Build quality
Less Important
  • Battery life
  • Storage
  • Screen size
Not Important
  • Touch screen
  • Screen specs
  • Ports (USB-C etc)
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Weight

There are currently 2 deals that look pretty good:
Dell Inspiron 15 5000
and
ThinkPad E595
Do either of these seem appropriate for me or should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks in advance!

Comments

  • the Dell is really well priced and will handle most things easily

    • Ok thanks - so that one stands out more to you?

      Will lean that way then.

  • If he’s getting older, maybe a 17” screen or one of those all-in-one - for the bigger screen? Assuming he doesn’t need it to be too mobile?

    • That's an interesting idea - I do think he'll need to be mobile though because he has some hobbies he'll need a computer out-of-house for. Thanks!
