Disgusting Racism by Australian Youfoodz CEO and Actress Fiancée

https://youtu.be/wbnegyPAZd0

Who knew the makers of pre-packaged, overpriced crap are actually closet racists.

YouFoodz needs to fire the CEO, even if he is the founder.

Lance Giles, CEO and founder of meal delivery business Youfoodz, and his fiancée Jordana Stott were caught on video mocking Asian people while in Singapore for the Global Restaurant Leadership summit.

The second clip, which is even more expletive-laden, captures a group of Asian guests posing for a picture in a swimming pool, as Stott mockingly comments, “Get it cts, fing get the photo, oh f**ing yeah she-shing.” A male voice, presumably belonging to Giles, can also be heard repeating Stott’s last words “she-shing,” attempting to mimic an Asian language.

So if I go out and say 'white power! all those non-whites are (profanity) lol' It's ok, I'm not actually hurting anyone, right? Nobody was physically harmed by my racist words, so you can't say i did anything wrong, right?

The difference is that your statement actually very clearly makes a judgement call against non-white people.

No-one thinks we should ban what she said, but I can sure as hell judge her for it and consequently not give any money to her husband's company.

This is a complete strawman, I'm not saying that you should or should not judge her for saying what she did. I think we can all agree that what she said was tasteless and stupid, but tasteless and stupid is not discrimination.

            • @p1 ama: The problem is that, as you have noted yourself, discrimination is incredibly difficult to prove. If someone is racist, like these two are, it's silly to think they don't discriminate. They definitely don't deserve the benefit of the doubt. Beyond that, explicit discrimination isn't necessary for someone to be offended. Racially attacking people for no reason is enough.

              • +2

Racially attacking people for no reason is enough.

Oh come on… we're going to call this a "racial attack"?

It was crass, poor form and immature. But to call it a racial attack is beyond a stretch of the imagination, and frankly insulting to those who have experienced genuine racial discrimination.

          • +1

@Autonomic: Don't worry. This p1 guy will go out of his way to defend blatant racism cause he loves licking boot. Racism is fine so long as you aren't beating people because of their race

    • +11

      It’s racist.
Mocking the Asian accent has a long history and has been used to put down Asians (as simple or stupid) for many decades. In particular it groups all Asians together as lesser; silly speakers.

It could be argued that mocking the way Asians speak can be a precursor to other more threatening behaviours….. perhaps.

I think it is important to call out such behaviours; and I would have if I was on their table. I would have pointed out that their rubbish talk was offensive to me (I am not Asian) and why.

      • It could be argued that mocking the way Asians speak can be a

It could be argued that ribbing/joking/teasing any body in any way can be a precursor to other more threatening behaviors….. perhaps(of course).

      • +7

What? I don't think people have ever thought of Asians as simple or stupid. Everyone makes fun of everyone else's language or accent, it's extremely common ribbing.

That's like saying I'm going to bash Canadians if I say "eh!".

        • +5

Exactly. Or saying fosh and chops when talking to a kiwi. Nothing more than mild ribbing.

          • +2

@HighAndDry: Except they are both predominantly white countries and therefore don't get discriminated against in Australia. Is it really that hard to understand that being non-white in Australia limits opportunities in a way being white doesn't, and therefore it's not the same when you pull the piss out of an already disadvantaged class?

And before you cry foul, ANU has found even having a foreign (non-european) sounding name gives you a significantly decreased chance of being given an interview. https://crawford.anu.edu.au/news-events/news/104/job-hunt-su…

Racism isn't helped when we decide that taking the piss out of non-white people for being foreign is ok because the people doing it aren't 'actually' racist, it just smoke-screens the actually harmful consequences of racist beliefs. Beliefs which have very real negative consequences like not being considered for a job because of race.

Except go back a few years to when it was the Europeans who were migrating to Australia and realise that they weren't even considered 'white' back then and experienced significant amounts of racism.

And before you cry foul, ANU has found even having a foreign (non-european) sounding name gives you a significantly decreased chance of being given an interview.

I read your link. That is not what it concludes at all. "The names we used were from five broad ethnicities: Anglo-Saxon, Indigenous, Italian, Chinese and Middle Eastern"

Unless you believe that all Europeans are either Anglo-Saxon or Italian? I guess all Asians are just Chinese in that case too.

              • -1

Absolutely. but we're not talking about back then, we're talking about now. Unless you think being italian in Australia poses any significant racial disadvantage, then my point still stands.

                • @[Deactivated]:

Unless you think being italian in Australia poses any significant racial disadvantage, then my point still stands.

Your point doesn't stand because you're basing it entirely on a white vs non-white thing when it isn't. All migrant populations and minorities have experienced racism - "white" or not.

And seeing as you conveniently chose to ignore the second part of my comment, I'll repeat it again. The research made absolutely no conclusions about having a European name vs a non-European name. The ethnic make up of Europe consists of more than Anglo-Saxons and Italians - but well done generalizing an entire continent of people when arguing a point about race.

Here's a direct quote from the actual research paper: "we have found clear evidence of discrimination against ethnic minorities – especially the more recently admitted groups–at the initial stage of the job-finding process"

You're saying it's about white vs non-white. The research you linked is stating that the relationship lies within being an ethnic minority and the recency of migration - not about the colour of one's skin. Italians face less prejudice now because they are no longer the minority.

Here's the link to the actual research paper

                  http://andrewleigh.org/pdf/auditdiscrimination.pdf

                  • +1

                    @Harold Halfprice:

Italians face less prejudice now because they are no longer the minority.

Italians make up 5% of the population of Australia. they aren't a majority. They immigrated in the 1960's and as you say, no longer suffer any form of discrimination, although they did initially. I fully agree that every major group of foreigners who come to australia suffer an initial backlash of xenophobia fairly evenly.

Chinese immigrants first started moving to Australia in considerable numbers in the 1850's gold rush era and make up 5.6% of the population of Australia and yet still suffer a considerable amount of the anti-asian sentiment which pervades Australia today. (exhibit a - the video in question)

Are you really saying this has nothing to do with colour? I think you're being intentionally obtuse if you don't see a difference between Australian society's ability to 'accept and assimilate' white immigrants compared to other ethnicities.

                    • @[Deactivated]: Chinese have been here a long time, you are right. But Chinese immigration had stopped for a very long time before only recently starting. Since 2001 the population of foreign born Chinese has more than tripled, where as foreign born population from most European countries has decreased. When Europeans were migrating here in large numbers, they copped large amounts of discrimination and weren't even considered 'white'. Now that they've stopped coming and mostly assimilated, discrimination has reduced significantly.

That is what the article you linked to concluded. That they found "evidence of discrimination against ethnic minorities – especially the more recently admitted groups". They drew no conclusions about skin colour.

It is clear to see that a large population of Chinese have not yet assimilated due to their recency of migration. Go to an area that is predominately Chinese here in Melbourne (e.g. Box Hill) and storefronts will contain very little or no English at all, and it's not uncommon to find an employee/waiter that speaks almost no English.

Besides, if you're saying the video exhibits "anti-Asian" sentiment - have you never heard someone put on a funny Italian accent? Would you equally describe that as "anti-Italian" sentiment?

Anyway, lets just leave it at that and agree to disagree because this has dragged on long enough.

        • Stupid and simple No, but perceived inability to communicate gives racists a reason not to hire certain races. White skinned accents with similar cultural traits however get treated as a comic relief that makes up for the apparent poor communication. This is more historical and Australia is far less racist than it used to be.

      • I heard Aussie accents most of the way through, except for the xi xing part, but then again she is saying something in Chinese. the yi ba xi xing part sounds wierdly upbeat. The video is also heavily edited.

Big deal , don’t see the drama !

Secondly really shows OP person of interest it could be anyone ?

    OP motives ?

  • +19

Just a couple of yobs. I am sure the Asians around them are talking shit about them too. And that's just how the world works. Especially with obnoxious drunk tourists.
It wont ever change. Its just worse now that everyone has a phone with a camera and is trying to get a platform.

Welcome to 2019. Where everyone is up in each others business and wants to keep them there.

  • +13

I lost some brain cells listening to her speak.

It's racist and a reflection of the Grade A Muppet she is… But if you expected more from these muppets, you have a higher expectation of eff wits than I do.

  • +3

    Cancel culture needs to stop.

  • +10

Yeah you shouldn't mock people's language, or swear at them, or be an ugly visitor in some else's country.

But no joke Asian people take a lot of photos.
    So do teenage white girls.
But Asians do take a lot of photos.

    Negs incoming?

    • +1

Yep, I'm on the Gold coast. Asian tourists taking photos of everything everywhere constantly. Same as teen/ early 20s white instaidiots. The truth isn't racism.

      • +6

There is also the irony of these people taking videos of Asians taking photos, mocking them for documenting their experiences… That isn't lost on me either.

But yeah, the Instagram generation does my freaking head in.

        • +3

Yes, and needing to post it social media as well, she/they are just attention seekers. Facebook, Instagram etc have made the world worse off.

    • They do indeed take a lot of photos of themselves.

    • +6

Every race takes heaps of photos of everything. It's modern phone and social media culture for ya, it's not magically limited to asians.

It's odd to rag on asians for doing it like they're the only ones doing it.

      • Yes yes every race takes photos, but who started the trend?

Alright I'm out of here, don't throw food at me, I'm regaining enough weight as it is.

  • -4

Harmless banter. Nothing to see here.

  • -1

I no longer understand whats classified as racist or not. How is it just using particular set of words make someone a racist and worthy of getting sacked of deported…

    • If I say that Asians are smart and hard workers is it racist? It's generalising a group after all?

      • Yes it is racist because it’s really a slagging off on the Aussie race and making us feel lesser human beings than Asians when all we’re trying to do is put in a fair day’s work to earn a fair quid to look after the missus and feed the kids and buy them a nice car when they turn eighteen and squeeze in a holiday here and there and hopefully pay off the mortgage before we roll into our graves. What’s wrong with that? Why does that make all us Aussies inferior? Maybe one or two Aussies do think the world owes them a living and wouldn’t know which end of a shovel or broom to hang onto and wouldn’t know what two times seven equals but you can’t paint us all with that same brush. So yeah of course it’s racist what you said.

        • Yes it is racist because it’s really a slagging off on the Aussie race and making us feel lesser human beings than Asians

          The Aussie race? 🤔

          • @sobes: They call them Aborigines.

            • @RolandWaites: Who is ‘they’?

‘First Nations People’ is the preferred term today when referring to descendants of the first inhabitants of this country. Some find the term ‘Aborigines’ offensive.

However, as with all things in life, context is everything. For a comprehensive rundown on how to refer to descendants of this country’s first inhabitants, you may like to read:

The problem is she was stupid enough to be caught doing it obviously…bogans aren't very bright creatures.

    • +12

      all white people are

It's just ignorant people. They are everywhere. Why do people always make a huge ruckus about it and escalated it to racism? Yeah I have no respect for the person in the video, but I hate the fact that people who post or comment on these videos always target an entire race and wanna raise a fight.

Being ethnically Chinese, I have to say the level of discrimination among Chinese people is way worse. It's just a fact that some people feel superior to others (regardless of race) because of their background, wealth, status etc.

    • +1

Why do people always make a huge ruckus about it and escalated it to racism?

Because it was racism and people don't like racism? Also, people are free to not want to patronise a company whose CEO is racist. No one is calling for them to be arrested or anything, they're just saying 'don't give money to this ignorant bogan'.

Yeah I have no respect for the person in the video, but I hate the fact that people who post or comment on these videos always target an entire race and wanna raise a fight.

I don't think anyone here was even remotely suggested that due to this video, we should target all white people?

Being ethnically Chinese, I have to say the level of discrimination among Chinese people is way worse.

True, but I'm not sure that Australia competing with China in "who can be a bigger racism hellhole" is a good competition. Maybe we should try to be less prejudiced? what have we got to lose?

      • +1

No one is calling for them to be arrested or anything, they're just saying 'don't give money to this ignorant bogan'.

OP is calling for the CEO/founder to lose his business over his girlfriend's(?) stupid remarks.

        • OP can try as much as they want but Youfoodz is a private company..

      • I don't think anyone here was even remotely suggested that due to this video, we should target all white people?

Why is this not targeting a race? Eventually (if things go as planned) what happens is they raise a fight between two races. ;)

  • +3

The most annoying thing is i have never seen any bogan make fun of a Tongan or maori wearing a sarong in the street.. why dont they say to a few Tongans (male or female) looking at sarongs on the phone "sarong mateeeeeee..oh, shit shit shit shitttttttt…..(profanity) run…please oh please im sorry"

  • +10

No offense, but how come all Caucasians look the same?

    • due to array of hair colours and different shades of white skin

    • -4

Because all you see is our nostrils? Try again from a horizontal viewing angle.

    • +2

Maybe similar way how Caucasians see all the Asians same. I was told once by my co worker saying we all look same, We just had a good laugh.

  • +5

Look at me… look at me!

This all started with someone stating how beautiful the Asians all look.

I suspect this "Ozzie scrubber" felt intimidated and insecure. Exaggerating her accent is literally an act of trumpeting attention.

Acting like a scrubber, exposes her as a "tart" whilst debasing other women, is her simply saying I am better, look at me look at me.

The woman has the mind of a child. A child finds ways in order to seek attention. This is her cathexis and autarky taking control.

    • +3

This is what social media breeds. People who need to be the constant centre of attention, and needing constant praise from others.

      • +2

        its (profanity) cancer

  • +5

Shitty food made by shitty people. Explains alot

  • +15

Asian people are extremely racist. It is only in multicultural societies like ours that we are victimised for anything even remotely racist. Go to China as a black person and see how you are treated. The PC armchair warriors may not like this comment but it is the truth.

    • Oh, so you're saying that we shouldn't try to be better than China?

Or are you saying, since they harvest organs, we can do that to?

Or are you saying, if one country is racist, we should be allowed to be racist to all other people of that race and you're not allowed to judge me for it?

This didn't happen in china, this happened in singapore. Are you saying 'china, singapore, whatever, they're all asians so its not a problem cos china is like racist or whatever'?

I'm really not sure what you actual point is other than 'yeah, they're being racist, but I don't care and anyone that does is just being a PC whinger'. If this is your point, you're a bit of an arse. "This issue doesn't affect me so the rest of you are idiots for caring about it".

    • -6

Go to China (or Burwood, Chatswood, Eastwood, Epping, Haymarket, Rhodes etc) as a white person and you'll be treated like a dog also (and not like a dog in the nice way Caucasians treat dogs, but more like in the way a certain Asian culture chops the paws off dogs [refer recent viral video])

    • But we're supposed to be better than the Chinese are. We're the master race. It's our burden and manifest destiny to lead by example. ;)

Joking aside, two wrongs don't make a right.

Or should I say two Wongs don't make a Wright?

    • +1

We should tolerate racism in this country because in other countries, people are more racist. And I love how you think there's no racism against black people in this country.

    • i'm confused are you saying all asian people are racist?

  • -2

    Rude and childish and unfunny.
"YouFoodz needs to fire the CEO, even if he is the founder." This is taking it too far. Don't be like always offended millennials or maybe you are?!
A public apology and something like free coupon or whatever would be enough.

    • +2

it'd be really funny if the coupon is "sha-shing"

  • +13

My Chinese friends are the most racist people I know, towards everyone.

When I was in China, some of their friends wouldn't even shake my hand! You wanna see racism? Find a gorgeous Chinese girl, go to an Asian club with her! You'll feel the full weight of it 😂

Don't mention Vietnamese, Filipino, Thai around them either! Apparently their way beneath them.

    • Next time go to a cinema with her :D

    • +1

Is your point that Youfoodz is allowed to be racist towards singaporeans because chinese people are racist?

      • -1

Singaporeans are mostly Chinese (plus some Indians and Indo maids), so what's your point?

        • +1

Are you saying that being ethnically Chinese has some form of inbuilt racism or that being ethnically chinese means you deserve racism due to China being racist?

I find that when someone does an Asian accent that is spot on, people don’t find it racist. I guess it’s the effort to understand the difference between Asian accents makes it more acceptable like Russel Peters and this adds the humour to it. Have not seen the video, so is accent spot on?

    • +3

It's acceptable when Russel Peters does it because he's a comedian doing a stand up show. It's explicitly a joke.

    • Russell Peters is South Asian. You’re welcome to use American, British, Canadian and any other white accents as a white person. Unless you’re actually speaking the language.

    • did this CEO comedian?

  • +2

Racism and bias in any shape or form are simply unacceptable and need to be eradicated.

    • +2

      Intolerance will not be tolerated!

  • +3

I agree that their behaviour is rude and unacceptable in this day and age, but other than not buying their products, I don't see much else that you can do. Vote with your dollars.

  • +12

To anyone who suggests that because "this person/group of people" is more racist, does not make the original act of racsim any better, nor is it justified.

Isn't that the same as like saying a rapist is OK because a murderer did something worse.

  • +9

    Another day another "outrage"…

  • +2

Bullshit aside I’m really happy to see a large portion of people who identify as Chinese or ethnically Chinese not be overly offended or play the victim card here.

This isn’t a direct attack against him, her or ‘them’. This is just some broad spurting low brow humour that only a 10 year old would find funny.

  • Although posting a video about it does take it to the next level, it’s interesting that if this was a video of her mocking some English people in a fake English accent about drinking tea, it wouldn’t be seen as racist?

  • +1

Real racist say ching-chong not she-shing.

    • +2

      Can't even #racist properly. What a numpty.

  • just cancel my plan, bye

  • +23

I was born in Australia, but my parents are Japanese. So I guess 98% of people think I only speak Japanese or are a tourist or student.

I’ve had some pretty crappy things said to me in my life “get out of my way squishy nose”, “oh I wasn’t expecting you to be Asian” (I have an Anglo sounding name), “move it slanty eyes” etc etc

I don’t really take offence to those but for some reason I do take offence to people that think they can come up into my face and pretend to speak some version of an Asian language at me. Had it done in the bus, train, public space etc. they’re usually always bogans who think it’s hilarious. Unfortunately being on the small Asian side I’m not willing to say things back as the bogans are usually in groups or much larger than me.

I have bought youfoodz a few times from the local iga but no longer will. This CEO is just another bogan like the others I have come across.

    • a quick witted reply just as racist directly back at them without batting an eye 100% of the time they will get embarrassed and back down.

          Just walk away girl.

Western mentality is to face your fears, asian mentality taught from the roots is walk away and ignore them.

          • @luffyex2010: Thanks luffy - yeah it’s not worth it (standing up to them), just hurts somewhat.

          • @luffyex2010: im similar to OP, asian born here, im still alive and grew up in a time with a lot less asians around. I have had several grown ass women, mothers tell me to go back to where I came from when I was a kid.

I told them I was born here, where should I go?!

girl, boy, non gender doesnt matter, stand up for yourself

shoulders slumped forward, walking away and ignoring makes you seem weak and a target for bullying and easy prey. Not to mention the negative effects it has on your own self confidence.

  • +3

sure there is a lot of truth to the comments about other cultures and nations being more racist and non-accepting. But that is no excuse, and I am extremely proud that Australia as a whole strives to be accepting of everyone. This sort of behaviour is just immature and they should be ashamed that they are still behaving this way.
