Very Basic configuration, for that price, but a good deal if you like Dell laptops.

At a glance:
Intel Pentium Processor T4500
Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
Anti Glare 15" screen - 1366 x 768
Onboard Graphics
DVD burner
6-cell battery
Webcam and Mic
Wireless-N, Bluetooth, Card Reader.

I think this is a good price looking at basic day to day needs.

  • nice find…

The deal also includes Dell Express services, which means you can get it in 2 to 3 business days.

thx mods for updating the title!

  • Isn't Pentium really really slow?

    • +2

not if you're stuck in 1999

    • All Intel CPUs are more or less Pentiums. Even a Core i7 is essentialy 4 really fast and advanced Pentium Pros. We would be well beyond 7 GHz CPUs by now if Intel went down the Tejas road instead of continuing to rehash the old PPro!

      • [insert number here] Ghz

        ninja edit? :P

The Lenovo G560 with Core i3 was a much much better deal at $409.

    • +2

agreed, not much of a deal here, i3 is much better in terms of power and battery life

      • +1

agreed no deal here. Can't always trust what the infamous jv says LOL

        • Nope, plus you can't even use the RACV discount code to get 6% off.

    • where can you get that from? Couldnt get to it on lenovo australia (well, not a $409 one anyway)

    • +1

Maybe you underestimate the value of $10 to an OzBargainer? :P But yes the other laptop is definitely the better pick considering the small price difference unless you particularly like Dell and dislike Lenovo

  • +3

hmm…. These Pentium dual core processors are stripped down (less L2 cache) versions of the core2 duo (which by now is 2 generations ago). Performance-wise, this is 4 years ago. Not convinced it is a good investment.

    • +1

agreed the T4500 is very poor compared to the new i3 processors. Lenovo G560 is a much better deal.

      • +1

        Is it cheaper ????

This was posted as a "very basic" machine…

It's fine for browsing, email, word processing etc…

        • +1

$10 difference for a much better machine? is this ozcheaper or ozbargain?

"very basic" doesn't mean any ol processor is still good. It will affect performance and battery life even if it is for "browsing, email, word processing etc."

    • Of course, if you're thinking of purchasing a current Atom, a T4500 is an awful lot faster.

      • 15" atom, don't think they exist chap

not everyone wants a big screen. I myself prefer a smaller screen if it has the same res as the bigger one, but haven't found too many 1080p 13inchers

this is not a great deal

    • +3

Not sure if you deserve to be negged for this comment. Yes, it is cheap, but it is poor value and not a bargain. My employer has been writing off laptops significantly faster than this one for over a year. I think many companies are targetting people who are not well-informed about how different processors compare. I know plenty of people who would look at a laptop like this and conclude "hey, that looks nice and modern, it must be good", while being negative about a less fancy-looking model with much higher specs.

      • +2

        Send me a write off!

  • -1

    the price looks good.
    is it an old model?
    how old is it ?

  • I think this is cheap, if your only going to use skype, emails and web on win7 your not going to need anything faster. I know JB has a computer with only 2 gig of ram and slower Processor for $449 that is on front page of there catalog.

    • +2

But that's JB. They tend to be quite expensive (their target audience includes many people who do not know how to interpret specs). Yes, today this laptop will suit basic needs. But if in half a year from now some new technology is released, you may find yourself unable to take advantage of it because your laptop can't handle it. If you buy something which is obsolete the day you buy it, it means you will not be able to enjoy it as long. Better off spending a tiny bit more, knowing you will be able to use it for several years longer.

  • Not a bad deal.

  • Anyone have any coupon to further reduce the price?

    • +1

The usual 6% discount coupons will actually make the price increase as they remove the $80 discount that is already present on this system.

      But here's one if you're a member of RAC/RACQ/NRMA : SZ8288HQ5RZCLH

  • What's battery life like with this thing, I'm guessing abysmal.

    • It might be abysmal, but anyone who needs it for basic use probably won't be away from a power socket for more than an hour.

The laptops in my house stay plugged in rather than on battery.

get an i3 people, it has good integrated graphics

    • "good" being debatable ;) the lenovo linked above has a 1st gen i3 which is inferior to the HD2000/3000 in the 2nd gen i series. (which are in turn beaten badly by AMD's latest attempt)

    • If you want good integrated graphics you'd be looking at the AMD LLano series, although clock for clock, they are significantly worse than Sandy Bridge.

  • +1 - most onboard graphics and all PCI graphics cards ($30 +) out do the inbuilt i3 graphics.

  • Dell has lost their way. Remember when you used to be able to customize every aspect of the computer, from the CPU to RAM to video card. Now they're all pre-configured. :( Dell also used to be pretty much the cheapest PC maker (because you bought direct and avoided the "middle man"). Now, this is no longer the case.

    • They still offer that level of customization on a lot of their computers. :) And they're still decent value when you make good use of specials such as this. :)
