    Says $150 per bottle?

Place in cart & -$429 discount makes it $150 total… wine good enough to serve to the pope?:) Good price but I have a $8/bott intoxication limit.

    • When added to cart it is $150

Does Sam Kim get kickbacks from Dans? His scores seem to be consistently higher than the other well known critics…

  • Guessing Uncle Dan comes up with his deal after getting higher than expected hits on the Martins Vineyard Shiraz from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/492234

  • Note - its a six pack not a dozen.
    Cheers

Sam Kim is worse than JH for giving higher points, more like their best of best is 110/105
Dan Murphy's panel is attrocious, they dont just miss the point(s), misleading at the best

    • Who's your go to Wine reviewer?

      • +1

The wine front are pretty good group of 3 reviewers In my opinion). JH usually scores on the high side, but I think he has a vast wealth of knowledge, also he has taken a giant step back with his reviews and now most tastings are done by the 'Halliday' team rather than James himself.
Wine tasting is completely subjective, your style and taste might align to a certain critic.
        James Halliday 96-68 = 94-96 for others.
The 100 point system means that bad wines can end up with 80+

      • If you take his ratings in isolation, James Halliday is generally seen to be the best. Even if the ratings are consistently high, they generally come off a similar base line, so are comparable. You are also unlikely to find another reviewer (treating his team as one reviewer) that has the breadth and depth of ratings.

I ran a wine focussed bottleshop for a number of years and always referred to Halliday. I would usually put any decent reviews on tags on the shelves, and customers are usually pretty aware of who he is and happy to use him as an authority.

        • +1

Firstly, it's rare these days that Halliday ever reviews a wine himself. There are a team of people who do it. The corruption with halliday is in the way his reviews are monetised. Wine producers and retailers must pay to advertise his score so it incentivises higher and higher scores. 13.6% of wines in the 1998 Wine Companion received 94 and above. In 2012, 33% of wines scored above 94. I am fundamentally suspicious of any wine reviews however, oddly they still have a reputation to hang onto and if they score something 96, it needs to be drinkable. Just don't hedge your cellar on it. I would trust Wine Front the most out of any and in particular Gary Walsh's reviews. They also tend to do a lot more international wines which is good. Keep in mind they mark them harsher. I have been a wine buyer for some years now and i know of a number of producers and importers who are friendly with Gary Walsh had their wines given mediocre ratings.

@BrokenRiedel: All true, but as I said my favourite thing with Halliday is that everything is relatively comparable - his 96s will be better than his 89s as a rule. I recall reading or being told about the process that they go through to standardise scores across testers.

The consistency is the only thing you can truly rely on in a subjective test.

A while ago Dan's had some great value mix packs (Henske mount edelstone, st henri, maurice o'shea) now they seem to be flogging inflated RRP wines (curtis, which seems to be always on 50%)

    • surprised to see this stuff being sold here

  • Thanks OP, picked up a six pack. Christmas presents for my parents sorted! Hopefully they are actually decent wines and not just Dan's brands…

    • Always a risk with Dan's - usually I would look at the 'bottled for' company on the back of the label, if the address is Mulgrave VIC it's usually one of Dan's group brands. You might still get good wines, but I would never trust the RRP they stick in you.

  • This Curtis Martins Vineyard has been in 3 deals recently. Are they closing down?

    • +1

They've gone for the model of 'Let us price our $25 wine as $100 and discount it to $25' so buyers are fooled into a big discount. Obviously demand is not high

Allegiance Wines is a "virtual vinyard". i.e. they buy by the 44-gallon drum or cleanskins, stick on a fancy label, and export to China.

So many spot on comments here.

I see this as 2 good bottles of Curtis and 4 fillers to pad it out.

Dan Murphy panel reviews - they are usually about 5 points over the mark. If "relying" solely on a Dans panel review I want at least 95 points.

So many of the Dans mega special are as manic says "virtual vineyards". I have been burnt once by the never heard of before Dans brands and will not be caught again.

Curtis wines are truly good wines but with bizarre retail pricing that no-one in their right mind would pay. I buy the Curtis range through winedirect.com.au.

  • Wow, for whatever reason Cashrewards gives you $20 on a $150 purchase. It thinks you paid the full retail price ($540+).. not complaining.. . So it’s $130!! don’t forget to use woolies 5% gift card!
