I have one but still prefer the bottled sparkling mineral water from the shop.

    • Sodastream makes soda water, mineral water is sodawater plus minerals (mainly salt).

I know, just pointing out that it doesn't taste the same as some people wouldn't know until they purchased.

    • +1

Why do you prefer the purchased carbonated one?

  • +4

I gave up on my sodastream. Was too expensive versus buying pre-carbonated drinks, especially when on sale.

Got bored of the flavours too

You can use any cordial or condensed juice on the market. People seem to think they can only use Sodastream products. Try Bickfords Pink Grapefruit, better than any pre-bottled drink IMHO.

      • Bickfords bitter lemon +1!!

The purchased carbonated water last much longer than compared to sodastream , plus the cylinders aren’t cheap.

    • +1

I don't mind spending the extra on a big 6kg gas cylinder and the fitting but if it doesn't taste as good or last as long, that's a whole other problem.
      Better get researching

    • It is intended to be carbonated prior to drinking, not pre-carbonated and then stored for consumption at a later time.

      • So if one feels like drinking only one glass what should be done with the leftovers, down the sink maybe ?

        • +1

The Sodastream bottles are 500ml, considering a glass is ~250-300ml, it's not unreasonable to just finish the bottle or share it.

Clearly it's not for you if all you're interested in is convinience.

I've been doing the 6kg sodastream hack for about 3 years now. We drink about 6-8 litres a day in our family and a cylinder lasts approx 5-6 months. ($45 refill). The secret is to use filtered water (under sink filter) and gas when water is cold. Depending of the effervescence you prefer give it a lot or a little.

It's economical, healthy and good for the environment as we don't use or buy plastic soft drink or mineral or soda water bottles.

I think someone did the maths on this ages ago and I couldn't be bothered to work it our but it sits somewhere around 11c a bottle. Also if you buy the stainless steel lids they last forever and keep fizz in bottle.

    Good luck!

sits somewhere around 11c a bottle

      Sounds about right.

I did some calculations a few years back and worked out it was costing me 6 cents and 8 cents respectively for the 500/1000ml bottles using a 6kg cylinder.

Certainly beats 50/75cents a bottle I was getting using $20 refills from Sodastream.

    • Mate. Solid post.

  • Can anyone please make a recommendation for a store in the Hunter region for getting all the modding supplies to convert my SS to a big bottle system?

I went to a home brew store over near Islington and the dude had no idea what I was referring to.

Cheers in advance for any advice, r3b3l.

Best option is online. This delivered :

They also deliver the 2.6kg and 6kg bottles. I converted mine, simple no problems. They have videos showing you how as well.

        Brilliant. Thank you. 😊

        • So you'll have this (ugly) additional cylinder on your kitchen countertop along with the SS, with the missus being fine with it?

          • +1

@N1ghthawk: A) Stick with the Sodastream if you want, use their bottles
            B) Can buy an adaptor to 'refill' your SS cylinder from a larger CO2 cylinder
            C) I keep mine in the pantry cupboard - gas bottle sits behind the SS, no problem
            D) You can buy a longer adapter hose, feed it into a hole on your bench, and store the cylinder away under bench if you want.

    • Avoid that place, and any store in the Hunter. No idea. Try Kegking as well.
