But to answer your question, outside of the negative environmental impact of plastics and synthetic fabrics, there is nothing wrong with polyester for certain applications.
For sportswear, certain types of polyester are actually desirable. In this case, Nike Dri-FIT fabric is all polyester, but made in a way that breathes and wicks away sweat way better than other fabrics while still being really soft and comfortable. Most high-grade sportswear is polyester or polyester blend.

I usually run a M to L jumper. But I can fit into a S with Nike jumpers. I guess it depends on how loose you want the fitting to be.
I normally wear L on jumpers but it looks too loose on the picture.
