Not sure if I want to go… my friend had been walking home (2 hrs) for the last couple of Sunday night after she finished her shift 8pm.. No public transport and no taxi..

  • +9

Haha. It's so easy to spot the rabid PRC supporter…

  • Need to pack my gas mask and umbrella.

  • Fight-or-flight response never ring so relevant to this deal, more so in the comments :P

I was there in July and it was ok. Most tourists hang out on HK island which is where a lot of the protestor action is (that being where legco is) but honestly, I don't think HK island is worth more than 1 or 2 days of sightseeing. Not to mention stuff is expensive on that side of the harbour. Kowloon is much more interesting and there's always the outlying islands. Even New Territories is worth a peek but no tourist ever makes it "out there" (it's not even that far really).

If you're Asian, young and wear a black t shirt you WILL get preferential police treatment. Source: a friend that visited recently who doesn't even speak any form of Chinese.

    • +3

True, if you have got an asian face, don't wear any kind of black, otherwise you would definitely get unreasonable strip searches

      • +2

There must be reasons for the search.

        • +6

          yes unreasonable reasons

with them there's no such thing as probable cause i've seen a video where a guy was just walking and the cops asked to search his bag, initially the cops couldn't think of a reason and then one of them said 'i suspect you have drugs on you' but he could not answer what lead to the suspicion and just kept on saying ' i suspect you have drugs'

      • Asian face, don't speak any form of Chinese and live in Melbourne (home of black)…. I'm doomed.

  • +3

Is it ok to walk around with a "Liberate Hong Kong" tshirt as a white person?

    • Probably. Just don't do the opposite.

Show any kind of support (including humanitarian) towards the anti-protestors and you are in serious trouble.

Ask Robert Ovadia channel 7 reporter. He has since been doxxed, trolled viciously and received death threats.

      • +5

Everyone knows C.7 is a pro-china media, didn't you know that they have been smearing and planting on the protestors using undercover cops, this is what C.7 will never tell you

Still not guarantied though, you will probably attracting lots of attentions from those $20 “front-line yellow jacket journalists” then you will either portrayed as "foreign supporter for HK freedom" or "Foreign agent that leading the HK rioters"

not sure which one is worse. No, I will rather not to be the later. Just don't go there, not now.

    • You would be absolutely alright to wear this kind of t-shirt. Most of the police are not courageous enough to f**k with a foreigner.

      • Maybe in Mainland China.

Most of the HK police speak good English and aren't scared of foreigners.

    • +1

Try and report back to us.

  • I don't know mate, I heard they are start making those IED, after stabbing the policeman in his neck, and after trying to kill some policemen. So maybe it is not really a great time to have a trip there.

just got back from 2.5 weeks in HK with family and kids, only saw protesters twice and easy to avoid. Otherwise perfectly safe and i encourage u to visit with these deals. Disneyland and Ocean Park are very quiet, we barely had to wait more than 10min on the rides, but the downside is that some of rides in both parks are shut for maintenance (low numbers of tourist….). Hotel prices are cheap as too. Ul find most of HK is just business as usual, maybe just quieter than usual. be aware though that from August most insurance companies have changed their updates so if u buy now u wont be covered if u get hurt during a protest i think….. but then most tourist wouldn't be in one anyway. make your own risk assessment and be smart and informed if u do end up going. im def tempted to go again with these prices.

My family in Hk and they can go out every day to buy take away and play sport. Try to live close to the area you dine and spend time. Don’t wear a mask and wear black clothing, as that sends as wrong message. Use taxi or Uber not MTR for transport. Whenever you see police whispers I am going back and I love xxxxx then you are safe.

    • +1

Presumably xxxxx is not the beer we talking about here?

      • It is xxxna or chxxx or xxixx not xxxan or jaxxx or xxpxx.

  • 500 bucks super deal from Qantas and 1 million insurance in future

  • I don't see the problem. People travel all over for music festivals… But can anyone say they've traveled for a riot?!

  • hows my favourite spot these days, LKF?

  • Smarttraveller still treats HK is high caution. I would think twice before you bargain this ticket.

    • Smart traveller seems to be changing in Nov to ‘we will only rego you in a crisis’. Not sure how you’re supposed to rego when in a crisis of an emergency.

  • The protests have died down in size now however important to avoid protest areas just to be safe even though for the most part it’s very peaceful

  • Full respect for this old lady who actually does good: https://twitter.com/RobertOvadia/status/1181478202897645568
I personally don't recommend going to Hong Kong considering current circumstances.
