  • if my Telstra post-paid contract ends on Nov 21, I can't really use this offer right? since it needs to be activated by 12 Nov.
have to change it to prepaid and then port it after the 21st.

  • Has anyone with an existing kogan plan tried this offer? Does it work or do you actually have to be a new customer?

    • Yes it works, you can't use for existing plan with kogan.
You just need to start with a new number from kogan or port in from other provider.

      • Damn this! So I cant use this voucher as a recharge?

        • I guess not then, I was gonna recharge mine too :(

          • @joeydesu1: "New customers" equals "new account" and/or "new number" with Kogan. That said, due to their contradictory wording on the previous page, I expect Kogan will allow quite a few existing Kogan customers activate it anyway. Either that or they'll be arranging refunds for irate buyers.

    • I bought the voucher and called up Kogan mobile to check if I can use it later for my current number with Kogan.
      - result: No. so I cancelled the order and am waiting for the refund to come through. (this was done with Kogan Mobile as Kogan.com won't help.)

      • Even after you received the voucher code, you can still cancel that? I don't mind just to pay $3.3 for 20gb/mth as a second sim.

  • If you don't top up your credit when the 90 days ends, how long do you continue to own your number before it becomes available for someone else to take?

    • +1

If you do not recharge your account after your plan expires, you will still be able to receive incoming calls and text messages for 20 days, and make calls to emergency services for 90 days.

      https://help.koganmobile.com.au/hc/en-au/articles/216814378-…

      • Yeah but once you lose access to calls, does your number go straight into the pool of available numbers someone can take as a new number?

Or is there a grace period where your service is inactive, but you still own the number and can port the number out?

I don't care about losing access to calls. I just wanted to know how much time I have to port out before I lose the number. I wanted to "park" it there until the next good deal presents itself.

        • 90 days is your grace period.

    • +1

Well, I expect you would want to port out if you wanted to keep your number. But to directly answer your question, the number remains yours for 90 days from the first day of the SIM's last active 30 day block.

i.e. Say you ported into Kogan on a 30-day SIM, didn't recharge, and didn't port out - then you would 'lose' that number 90 days after day 1. And if it were a 3x 30 days SIM like this deal instead, then you'd lose your number 90 days after day 1 of the THIRD block (30+30+90).

But As the conversation just above shows, you would have lost the ability to make calls on day 31 or 91, and lost the ability to receive calls on day 50 (30+20) or 150 (30+30+30+20=110).

In other words, even though you couldn't make calls, you could recharge up to day 110 - at midnight of day 110 your number is 'thrown back into the pool' to be randomly allocated to anyone.

      • That's very informative, thank you.

I don't port out as soon as I'm out of credit because it's a secondary number, not my primary and it's not critical to do so. I wait for a good deal before I port again. But I still want to keep the number because I don't want to have 20 numbers from telco bargains. Some telcos restrict you if you own more than 4 mobile services. So I port one number around constantly in order to keep my mobile services low and not hit any restrictions.

Kogan's grace period is relatively reasonable. Amaysim is still my preferred place to "land" on if it's going to be inactive for a while. I used to use their PAYG to keep a number connected to me, but now they have a minimum $10 charge so I only go there when they have a deal on, and then I keep it there.

When your number has landed in the public pool open to new services, can you still port it out (if no one else has taken it yet), or do you no longer have any claim to it?

        • Ah, I see.

No, the number becomes detached from you. It may or may not be allocated to someone else immediately, but the only way to get it back would be to expect someone at a telco to scroll through literally thousands of numbers trying to find it again, to make it yours again. However…

Not sure if this suits your use, but Aldi (Telstra wholesale) has a $5/365 day SIM. It comes with $5 credit. Calls are deducted from that $5 at $0.12 per min, SMS $0.12 each, MMS $0.35 each, and data = $0.05 per MB (so $5 = 100MB).

I'm thinking about getting one to have a permanent number for $5 per year. So that's the number I'd give out for incoming calls. (Two phones or a dual SIM phone.) And I'd use cheap deals from wherever for outgoing calls. (Everyone I call knows to expect me phoning on numbers they don't recognise. And if they reject it, I send an SMS saying it's me.)

Oh, and with the 4x services 'limit', I now just say I don't have more than 4. I've had about 8 SIMs activated at the same time with no problems. I recall reading someone on here in a Kogan thread saying something like: if you say you don't have more than 4 active SIMs the oldest one 'drops off' the end. Something like that anyway. I think he meant they 'turn the oldest SIM off'!? All that matters though is I never tick yes, LOL.

People have done this to me before. I find it annoying that every month a person calling me is on a new number and I have to wonder if it's someone dialing the wrong number or if it's them, or if it's a salesperson, or someone working at an institution I am a client of. I just don't like not knowing who's calling.

My primary phone number is on a contract so I don't have a problem with dialing people on it. I mainly only use the secondary number for data or to sign up for things without giving my real number out. I don't give out fake numbers when signing up because they sometimes send verification codes. Or sometimes if someone asks for my number and I don't want to give them calling me, I just give them the secondary. Sales people, and people I am acquainted with but not too close to.

I can understand why your strategy could be good for bargaining. I think Amaysim PAYG lets you keep your number longer without using it.

The problem when you text people on temporary numbers is, the person's chat history won't be kept in one continuous place. They could add your number to their existing contact, but when you change your number again and they delete it, those text messages could get decoupled.

And if you keep getting new numbers, you could reach some kind of limit. Some telcos actually check this.

Oh, and with the 4x services 'limit', I now just say I don't have more than 4.

I have tried this before and they called my bluff. It stopped my signup process until I got it resolved. Since then I just let all the numbers expire and stick to 2 or 3.

They better not check on me then… I've burned through several dozen SIMs in recent months. ;-D

              • @GregMonarch: I lied to yomojo about my services and they busted me.

It's just easier to manage a single number in any case.

  • Didnt think of this, but I assume you can Port from Vodafone to Kogan??

    • i think so

  • Only just got my SIM an waiting for activation. Where do I go to switch OFF auto recharge?

    • Log in to your account and disable it.

      • Can't find it.

        • +1

You have to log in to your Kogan account and on the left hand side you can choose I think is called payment system, something. Just log in and you'll see it on the left, click on it and delete your cc details. If you haven't logged in before, you have to log in using your mobile number that you got with the sim and your birthday will be used to make a new pin so you can sign in.

          • @bargainparker: Sweet thanks mate. Was logged in but didn't realise removing card was way to do it.

  • Will Kogan allow me to activate 2 different sims under the same name for this offer?
