  • Damn, I need the 5 - 30 Enviro for my VW. Though I see it is discounted by $17. Not bad.

      Enviro?
Is it diesel? Enviro is designed for low sulphur fuels, and Australian fuels usually aren't.
      Summer's rolling around, being a (thin) 40w won't be a harm.

Less Zinc and Phosphorus, less sulfated ash, and a SIGNIFICANTLY lower TBN?
      Yuck.
In a diesel the TBN especially is a concern.

I can only assume they spec it for diesels to make the DPF do slightly less cycles.

18.75% thicker; most oil pumps will be fine with that.
Depends how long you spend at redline; I fyou just tap it occasionally, you're unlikely to cavitate the oil.
If you like to street race, and spend more than 5 (literal) second intervals at more than 75% of your revv range, I'd possibly think twice.

      • if they are both 5W, how come the viscosity of the 5W40 is much higher at 40C?

      • +1

Wow, thanks for spending the time to give me such a detailed reply. Unfortunately, most of the figures you gave me mean bugger all.

My car isn't a diesel, just the old (2011) super charged, turbo charged 1.4 dsg - yes it was replaced - Jetta. I was just going by what the VW website recommended to use.

More than happy for any other recommendations on what oil to use instead of the Penrite Enviro.

        Thanks again.

        • With that engine I would be sticking exactly to manufacturers specifications. My normally aspirated engine has over 200k on it so I have gone from the recommended 5w30 to 5w40 due to wear. The 5w40 burns less and is quieter (less tappity) than the 5w30 of other brands.

Wow good price. I've been meaning to move to a 40 weight oil (car is getting old) but never could wuite justify the price premium from 5-30 to 5-40.

  • Nearly pull the trigger before I realised it's 5L not 6L bottle which I normally get from SCA.

    • Buy 6.

      • Buy two 5L ones, still $2 cheaper than buying the 6L one lol

        • +1

I stocked 2 bottles of 6L at same price last time.

  • Cheap price!

  • this is a pretty good deal right now, I miss this deal from a couple of years ago,
fantastic deal of 6 litres for 29.99, (5 bux a litre) this time its ~37 for 5 (7.40 per litre) so almost 50% more!

but the times they are a changing!

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/375338
(30 bux for 5l, but more than a year ago as well.)

(just noting this is far more than CPI - as im sure you could go back to 2000 and get cheaper oil again!)

  • The 10L a few months back was a good deal!

  • I may be a bit ignorant but what do the numbers mean like 5W - 40

    • +1

weight/viscosity of the oil and how it performs hot/cold, higher numbers generally thicker, so doesn't leak or burn oil as much, but thinner oils allow the engine to work more efficiently as they don't as as much resistance.

cars are typically designed to run on an oil weight… though it can get thicker as they get older.
