[Pre Order, PS4] The Last of Us Part II $69 Delivered @ Amazon AU

Amazon are already undercutting/matching their competitors and currently have TLOU2 available for pre-order cheaper than anywhere else. Usually I'd always be cautious with pre-orders but considering this is a AAA Naughty Dog game it would surely live up to expectations (otherwise there's still Amazon's 30day return policy).

Stack this with a Macca's Monopoly voucher and throw in a price protection card for good measure and surely you can't lose.

My final checkout price ended up being $49 for the game that made me want to get a PS4 in the first place, can't complain about that.

Prices at other stores for comparison:

  • JB $79
  • The Gamesmen $78
  • Big W $69 (credit aja12)

    Snuh? Maccas Monopoly voucher?

    • +4

Yeah one of them you can claim is $20 off an order over $79 on Amazon. However, it's only for new accounts ("new" "accounts" wink wink)

        • -1

Eh, I don't eat it, my partner does.

@theguyrules: Dude, you don't need to defend yourself to a random kid on the internet.

              • +1

                @cnut: Yeh, but nobody asked.

              • +1

@cnut: I may eat trash, but I don't fight it.

                • -1

@NeggerOfDeals: Forgot to mention I eat it and I’m a fat bitch too.

              • @cnut: I love a good maccas every now and then

        • Username checks out

      • +19

The real "wink wink" here is the fact you don't actually need a new account for it. Just simply contact the live chat and give them your code and they'll apply $20 credit to your account. Also means there's no min spend requirement as it's now just a standard Amazon promo credit. That's how my final checkout price is $49

        • oh nice!!

        • nice,

sorry for the noob question, how do you get to live chat on the amazon website? Im gonna try the same. cheers.

        • +1

Not sure how you got this to work, I was talking to customer service support via web chat just now and they are privy to the Amazon Macca's promo. There is no "wink wink" here

          • @Ema000: I tried twice and no luck either.

          • @Ema000: Well… I tried chat, the lady said she would offer me the 20 dollar credit, but then said my account was acutally an account on amazon.jp and couldnt add the credit? after 10 minutes of telling her i had numerous orders through amazon au, she said i should just call.

SO, I called, and the new lady said that she couldnt do anything about the actual code, but she could add a 20 dollar credit to my account.

She made me do an order on the spot though, to confirm i was going over 79 dollars. However i was taking too long on the phone call to find another product from amazon au to get it past 79 she just added the credit to my account and let me go.

So maybe try the calling option, she didnt even ask me for the code.

TLDR: got it through calling them instead of chat. explained i wanted to use code but didnt want to make a new account, they offered 20 dollars off next purchase.

            • +1

@glennmoir: Yeah that's fair enough, BUT the outcome is entirely circumstantial and you got lucky haha. It's much easier to just make a new account and apply the code that way

              • @Ema000: Not really actually, the whole reason I ended up claiming it on my current account was because I made a brand new account and fulfilled the requirements and it still didn't allow me to use the code, which was why I contacted the chat, and discovered they were aware of this and for whatever reason were applying the credit almost no questions asked (the only question I was asked was "have you shared this code with someone else perhaps?"). However don't bother trying to game this as they will only apply it once per account, even if you have multiple voucher codes.

        • +1

Thanks for the hint Shekster! Worked a charm

        • I went onto chat and got rejected

        • Got rejected too… have caught on maybe?

        • Worked for me too, thanks! Anyone know if they stack on one transaction?

        • +2

Thanks!, I also had $40 in credit because amazon sent out the wrong dlc codes for my Fifa 20 orders, so final price of $9!

If anyone else is interested, they sent out a message that claimed 12 gold packs over 12 weeks but it was actually 3 over 3 weeks. To buy those 9 aditional packs would be about $20. Just contacted support and they were happy to issue a $20 refund for each order of the game.

          • @Vinodra: Oh what no way I didn't even think I could actually get compensation for that…

Definitely going to give this a try when I get home

        • Was able to use this wink wink method twice for two different accounts. One for TLoU2 and one for Death Stranding. $49 and $48 a piece. Thanks for the heads up!!

          • @[Deactivated]: What do you actually say in the chat to make them want to add $20 credit? For me it went… A: How can we help? M: Can you add this credit onto my account.. <voucher number>? A: What item are you trying to buy? Can you send link? M: <Link for something over $79> A: Where did you get this code? M: McDonalds. A: Yeah that's only for new accounts. M: Ah damn. Thanks A: Can we help you with anything else?

Maybe because I tried twice its like… noted on my account now or something.

            • +2

@Lister55: I asked something along the lines of

"Hey, I have recieved a $20 off voucher of mcdonalds monopoly promotion, however it requires a new account to be used. I don't want to have to create a new account to use the voucher, is there a way I can use it on my current account?

              • +1

@glennmoir: Okay I tried going back to the chat and it actually worked this time, I used your example and the customer service guy said no sorry new accounts only, but I told him I was that I was a loyal Amazon customer and he made an exception for me ! Thanks for the tip

                • @Ema000: So I've got three of these gift cards, how do you guys use them? Don't really want to spend $79 on a new account each time.
Also spoke to them on chat and they gave me a credit without taking the gift card number.

                  • @Luke o: Sorry for the late response, I'm just seeing that you've replied to this message. I have a few of those vouchers as well, the Amazon customer service person will most likely just credit one of the $20 vouchers if you tell them that you're a loyal Amazon customer. For the other vouchers, you're probably just going to have to make a new Amazon account, it's not difficult to do, you just need to use a different email and I noticed that you can use the same payment method. Unfortunately from my experience, you will need to spend the minimum $79 to get the discount code which is fair enough.

              • @glennmoir: I went on saying what you said too… and they rejected me!!!! I can't believe it! I guess its who you speak with.

      • Easy to win, got 6 so far.

      • Ahhh yes, new accounts.

        I don't get it.

  • +16

Amazon doesn’t undercut, they price match. If it’s $69 at Amazon, It’s only because it was $69 somewhere else first.

Edit: We can thank Big W for Amazon dropping their price.

    • +2

BigW/HN/JB are always to thank for low intro prices.

    • +1

Good spot, fair play to big W as they tend to always be competitively priced for new releases.

If I didn't already have the voucher and there was a store reasonably close to me I'd definitely want to support them.

    • +23

How about we actually thank Big W by purchasing it from them instead of amazon?

      • +1

You're not wrong…. but this is also OzBargain…

      • because they put stickers directly on the ps4 case

      • +1

if you limit your thanks to the originator, they are not going to have enough stock to go around for everyone who wants it. That's why you have to always thank price matchers for increasing the availability of stock. It's a win-win for everyone when a competitor price matches. Big W also isn't going to do free shipping, and if you're going to pick up, hot things are low in stock for any store.

      • Because they won't deliver it to my doorstep..

  • +3

Also, Cash Rewards doesn’t apply to preorders placed more than 60 days before dispatch.

    • Forgot about that, thanks. Have edited the post.

  • Now to wait for the $68 JB price beat.
I'm taking no chances and will pick this up in store on release. Amazon screwed up my Borderlands 3 order on release date.

    • +5

I only trust JB for pre orders. I'm happy to pay a few bucks more with JB. I often get the games the day before it's released or 2 days before. Also last time I didn't pre order, the prices went up the day of release.

      • +1

I wish JB would allow instore pick up for all preorders. I can’t understand the why you can only select pick up for a very few select games.

        • Oh interesting, why do you need to pick it up? I would imagine getting it delivered to your house/work/etc the day or 2 days before release would be better right?

Also noticed this on their terms:
          Pre-order Click & Collect

Click & Collect Pre-orders placed and paid for prior to the official release date will be available for collection at your selected store from opening time on the official release date.

You will receive a notification from us when your order is ready to be collected.

        • Just tried pre ordering this game, I can click and collect.

          • @onlinepred: Yes, thats because they've changed it in the last couple of hours. Itd be nice if they updated the price too. But C&C is still not an option for games like Death Stranding, FFVII Remake, Grid, Outer Worlds.

      • Have to disagree, still waiting on FIFA 20 to be delivered even though I pre ordered it last month, and it came out on Friday

        • Wow that sucks! What happened there?

          Delivery

Pre-orders for delivery that are placed and paid for more than 3 business days prior to the official release date will be dispatched from our Victoria warehouse no later than one day prior to the official release date.

Our Express Delivery service is generally delivered within 1-2 business days, and is often the quickest delivery service available for Pre-Order releases. We suggest you deliver to a residential address to avoid delays.

Please note: Express service is not available for PO Box or Parcel Locker address types. Courier Delivery and 3 hour Rush Deliveries are not eligible services for pre-order releases.

          Last minute delivery pre-orders

Pre-orders for delivery placed and paid for in the last 3 business days before the official release date your pre-order may not be dispatched until after the official release date

          • @onlinepred: Why do I need to pick it up? Two words - Australia Post. If I wanted to put my faith in our delivery services, I’d go with Amazon. Free express shipping, as opposed to $3.50 with JB. Also, JB now takes full payment immediately for preorders, Amazon doesn’t charge until dispatch.

            • @aja12: I've pre ordered 3 games through amazon, they all arrived on the day of release or a day after. In one case the release date was Friday, so I didn't get the game till Monday. That and I just don't support Amazon really, I'll but if I save loads of money, but a few bucks I would buy from local stores anyday. I've never had issues with Aus Post, although I live in a major city so perhaps that's it?

          • @onlinepred: My only guess is because the release was Friday, people who pre ordered through Amazon got theirs on release- I don't want to stop using JB as they were the ones that set the best price in the first place, but their delivery game for preorders has to be better. Aja12 is right, click and collect should be an option

            • @toblerone21: I can click and collect pre orders? I just choose it at the end. When you pre ordered it through JB, as it greater than 3 days before release?

              • +1

@onlinepred: didn't know that, will probably do it next preorder, thanks

                • -1

@toblerone21: He's wrong mate, it's only (very) select games that you can pre-order and choose C&C.

              • @onlinepred: You missed what I wrote earlier- it's an option for SOME pre-order, it's not all pre-orders. They even mention this fact in the pre-order FAQ.

        • +2

Amazon stuffed up my FIFA 20 order too. I preordered it 2 months before release.

They ended up getting me to reorder it yesterday and gave me free priority delivery and $19.99 credit, so it cost me $48.01 and arrived today.

  • +1

I was happy to spend $99 on this one, I think I'll wait for jb to lower then preorder!

    • The game will be worth every dollar you drop. It is going to be a masterpiece

  • Gotta love 10% staff discount. $63 for me at bigw

    • You could just trade in some old games to EB and get it dirt cheap. I got Breakpoint preorder for $19 after trading in two really old games.

      • Some = 20 games? I know how generous is EB with games trade in value.

        • If they do a deal, which they often do like the breakpoint deal (min value $10 per game, 2 trade ins, get prorder for $19 etc) it's worthit. Otherwise it really depends. A mate gave me 20 used PS4 games as he was moving overseas, I was able to trade in 12 of them as the other 8 were below the $10 trade in value, so I have loads of credit with EB. I often trade in my really old games that are mostly worthless, also some games people just don't want to buy anymore can sometimes still be traded with EB.

      • Breakpoint is rubbish full of bugs

        • Breakpoint isn't out. If you are talking about the beta, then yes it's full of bugs lol, its a BETA

    • +5

      Just like RDR2 eh

      • -5

RDR2 is a special case, Rockstar know how to keep demand high on their games (look at GTA) whereas Sony exclusives (eg God of War) do not hold their value. Other examples inc AC series and Shadow of War.

        • +5

God of War took over a year to drop to $29. It got to $50 in 3 months so I guess you could wait for that?
Certainly will not be 3 weeks. You can check out the price history of games here on Ozbargain very easily.

    • +2

      3 weeks? lol?

      • +1

Hoping EB will do another $29 if trade in 2 games worth $10+ each like what they did for RDR2 pre-order.

    • cool beans :) while your prediction orb is in full gear.. any chance of lotto numbers or something bit better than saving $40 on one of the most anticipated games ever ?

    • That's going to be a long 3 weeks!

    • tightm8 where are you getting historical evidence of AAA first party games dropping to $29 within 3 weeks?

    • What do you mean by 'these type of games'? For me this game will have more FOMO than any release ever - I'm pretty sure TLOU1 had some weird spiritual effect on my life.

  • Last big title for PS4? Surely they'll release a PS5 launch title for this. Want to avoid having to double dip

    • Ghost of Tsushima is another possible big title for PS4 though both titles could be cross gen titles.

    • Hmm. We don't really know what the nature of re-releases on PS5 will be like yet. If there's full backwards-compatibility with PS4 games, then 're-releases' might be as simple as a PS5 patch for the game (much like we got Pro patches for some games when the PS4 Pro released).

I know devs/publishers will be keen to get that sweet sweet re-release money (PS3 to PS4 re-releases were big business), but I feel like people only put up with that because it was a different architecture. If you can put a PS4 game into a PS5 and get it to work perfectly well, repurchasing a game just for the graphical upgrades is a harder pill to swallow.

      • +4

They said it is backwards compatible already

      • +1

I'd expect (or at least hope) that PS5 being BC with PS4 means a PS5 enhanced version would be a patch for the PS4 version, similar to the way older games got updated for PS4Pro when that was released.

Otherwise, there's also the possibility of cross-buy. There was a bit of that around during the PS3-PS4 transition ie buy a game on PS3 and you got the PS4 version free when that came out. Journey is one that comes to mind immediately, and also Battlefield 4.

      • The PS4 version (disc) should work on PS5 through a version update. However, Sony will probably cater for PS5 owners not owning the PS4 version and release essentially the same game but with a disc that has a newer version / pre-patched so it will run on PS5 without any download (and probably a different cover art).

Or, we could be wrong and there is/are other PS5 launch titles in the works. Hard to think of any first party studios doing them right now. Guerrilla Games could be… Sony Santa Monica generally don't release games that quick. ND and SP still have those two titles to release. We know Microsoft is going with Halo Infinite and that's going to be a console selling title (and with it in GamePass and XB2 would at least have a trial GamePass code, it will not be easy for Sony)….

        • +1

Guerilla have 2 teams, presumably working on Horizaon Zero Dawn 2 and a new Killzone (although they were also involved with making Death Stranding so maybe that kept one team busy). You'd assume they'd have a title ready for launch or close to it. Naughty Dog also have 2 teams so I guess they'd have something else in the works in addition to TLOU2.

Polyphony would have been working on a new GT for a couple of years now, so they'd presumably have something to show when PS5 is officially announced, although whether it would be ready for launch is another matter.

Insomniac (who are now owned by Sony) would have something in the works, too, whether that's another Spider Man or something else. That will be 2 years between games by the time PS5 comes along, so you'd think they could have something ready to go pretty close to launch.

  • As someone who prefers digital copies I am very disappointed that the physical copy is $30 cheaper than digital.

Uncharted 4 digital at release was $80, I was expecting TLOU2 to be the same price, not $100

    • +6

I was going to go digital this generation, but physical copies still have a lot of advantages, with price being a major factor. The fact that they can be resold later is another.

If you go digital, you unfortunately then deal with only one store (PlayStation store in this case) having a monopoly and ability to keep prices high for longer.

    • +1

Digital is convenience, but much more costly. Physical copies are for those that want to save money.

      • +4

That's my annoyance, it shouldn't be that way. Digital comes with no associated production/distribution cost, and as suggested by Skittlebrau it has less advantages like resale value. It should be on-par or better value than physical prices but it isn't and hasn't been for a long time. I remember when Steam prices used to be significantly better than retail prices but B&M stores complained to distributors who complained to publishers who raised the digital prices to not undercut retail stores.

As I mentioned, when Uncharted 4 came out it was $80 digital and $69 retail. I was expecting a similar price and I'm happy paying the extra for the convenience (plus I never resell or lend games), but this price difference is nearly 50% more for a "lesser" value product.

I really do not want a physical copy, and this isn't just a physical vs digital preference. I've adopted a very minimalist lifestyle, I do not like objects cluttering up my home.

        • They have to keep servers up for huge amounts of data with massive upload speeds, so there is costs to it.

But yes, I 100% agree digital should be much cheaper, especially if you are paying for ps plus as an example.

I've adopted a very minimalist lifestyle

There's a difference between being OCD, and minimalist ;-) Minimalist lifestyle wouldn't have a gaming console.

Yea I don't keep the game long anyway, I finish them then sell them, makes gaming much cheaper in the long run, and they don't clutter up my home as I have a tiny draw to keep them in.

          • +1

            @onlinepred:

They have to keep servers up for huge amounts of data with massive upload speeds, so there is costs to it.

Sony/Microsoft utilise CDN's (Content Delivery Networks) for downloading of digital releases, these are generally much lower cost compared to dedicated services for multiplayer. In addition, these CDN's would exist regardless of digital copies due to the large patches and DLC's that are typically only available direct from Sony/Microsoft networks.

        • +1

The problem is they have to keep the physical retailers onside because they still depend on them to sell the consoles, controllers, VR headsets and all the other physical merchandise, as well as physical games which are still a significant (if shrinking) portion of the market. I'd be curious to know just how much of a profit margin these retailers have if they're selling the game for $69, though - I'd suggest very little, if any.

So yeah, it tends to be full RRP for the digital copy at launch to give the physical retailers a look in during the peak sales period, but then the sale prices tend to be better for digital when it goes on sale later on. The solution which I've settled on is basically that I hardly buy anything at launch these days. I've got a big enough backlog that even if I buy a game for $99, by the time I get around to playing it, it would have already been on sale for half that if not less. So I just wait until the price comes down and add it to my backlog then. The only real exceptions to this are multiplayer focused stuff where you really want to get in on the ground floor (eg a new Battlefield or COD), or stuff that I really just view as essential. TLOU2 fits into this latter category, so I'll be buying that day 1, $99 or not :P

          • +1

@AngusD: I'm the same as you. I only buy on day 1 if there is a limited edition that won't be available again if not preordered.

I personally hate when they do that.

    • Unfortunately they have to do so due to needing retailer support for selling the console itself and all its accessories.

Look what happened to the PSP Go, Sony's digital-only console which eventually led to retailers literally refusing to stock it as there was no potential for stores to make any other profit off it.

      • I think they refused to stock it because it was unpopular. You buy a handheld with no UMD drive and a smaller screen for the same price as as the full unit which can play digital and UMD games? Why would you want that? You're just limiting your options then.

Microsoft has been so quiet about their Xbox One SAD edition that I forgot it existed until now. I know MS doesn't talk figures, but they usually give some vague "we are very pleased with its sales" or "its sales have exceeded our expectations". They haven't said a thing about it because I think it flopped hard.

        • I also suspect it flopped hard, but at least the retailers are selling it (it's on the EB and JB websites at least). So maybe they're OK with it if they can still sell controllers etc, which they couldn't with PSPGo. Or maybe they're just still giving it a chance and will give it the chop later if it isn't selling.

That digital-only XB1 is utterly pointless though - the only way it makes sense is if it's significantly cheaper. But the difference from a regular XB1S is like $30, and why wouldn't you pay $30 extra for a 4K movie player. Even if you don't use it, it's not much money to have the option and flexibility. It really needed to undercut the standard XB1S by somewhere between $50 and $100 to be worthwhile.
