This is a great deal.
Even when a stopover is permitted I've never been able to get the website to make it happen at the sale price. Maybe you need to go to a travel agent for that?

Flying the other way (same seats on same planes, but starting in LAX going to SYD return) the price is US$2300 (approx AU$2130)

To be fair that is over christmas/new year and you'll be hard pushed to find any good price during that time.
Maybe they will actually provide good service for once and that is why they are calling it a sale :)

If it's Premium Economy, jump on it. Economy to LA at the moment, depending on dates, can be as much as $1600/1700 return.

Very happy booking my Sydney/Dallas flight for $997 return during their real sale at the start of the year. The Sydney/New York price is not bad considering what the oil price has been doing this year.
