Thanks Op. I'm not travelling anytime soon to Indonesia but will keep in mind for next time. What kinds of speeds do people actually get with these as everytime I'm in Jakarta, I get shocking speeds even on 4G (I'm talking 1-2Mbps tops) and have tried various networks.

    • Same experience with my starhub. Indonesia 4G speed is poor. Maybe due to overcrowded. Though their home line internet (I suspect it's cable internet) is twice the speed of my ADSL here in Australia which come with twice the price (still waiting for my NBN rollout).

      • Keep in mind Starhub routes all data back through Singapore so that creates an inherent reduction in speeds which unfortunately makes it nearly unusable in some parts of Jakarta. (I used to live in Singapore and tried both my Singtel and Starhub sim cards in Jakarta)

    No sex though.

    • +1

      That's nuts!

      • you be careful

    • Only for unmarried couples. The Islamic norm there is to get young girls married off asap, which kinda explains this new law.

      • +4

The law has now been postponed btw! haha

      • what new law?

      • Its also illegal to have sex with goat or sheep, and dogs too.

    • you can , just don't show off or tell them before. or make loud noise

  • +6

I don't know if this is a good deal or not, but it's about $12 for 12gb on Telkomsel when you land in Indonesia. Locals say Telkomsel has the best coverage in Indonesia.

    • +5

Hey BM, firstly we offer convenience as the sim card will be ready to use when you land in Indonesia once activated from here (so no running around to find one)

Secondly airports in Indonesia is known to charge excessive amount for sim cards (around Rp 200,000 ++), not sure if there is any seller selling for $12. Please also be mindful as Indonesian operator usually tricks customer by inflating the data inclusion, in your example the 12gb may consists of:
      - 2gb Anytime data
      - 5gb midnight data (00:00 - 06:00)
      - 5gb streaming data (only to be used via their dedicated apps)

Our sim (whilst the coverage is not on par as Telkomsel) comes with 5gb ANYTIME data + 1gb Local data (Jakarta surrounding areas only).

      Hope this explain things :)

      • +1

You're right - I mean once you've left the airport.

Eg for Denpasar, just walk 10 minutes out of the terminal and exit the airport - there are multiple SIM sellers there who aren't scammers. It's a double bonus because you won't get scammed by the Taxi mafia and can just get a Bluebird or Grab or GoJek.

Jakarta is a little more difficult so use an offline maps app like Maps.Me and buy a SIM anywhere in the city.

        • +3

          Hi BM

That's right obviously it is cheaper to buy In Indonesia (apart from airport sellers).

But most people would prefer the convenience of having the sim card ready to be use once they land.

          • @TravelKon: Absolutely - I think this is reasonable value for a first time traveller to have data in a country they're unfamiliar with.

        • You can get Grab directly from DPS airport, use the Wi-Fi (or this SIM) and they'll msg you which floor of the car park they can pick you up from. :)

          • @slikstick: really, i didnt know that, will they let every grab in? or if you just get lucky

    • +3

I've lived in Indonesia. Tri is the 4th in terms of coverage: 1. Telkmosel 2. XL Axiata 3. Indosat 4. Tri.

      • where's the best nasi goreng kambing ?

        • Kebon Sirih.

          • @[Deactivated]: Bullshit, that place is a hype. Go to Taman Lawang if you want to eat the best Nasi Goreng Kambing. It's where all the bencong aka transgenders hang around at night.

            • @Gorodemon: nah, seriously boys … where is the best place for nasi goreng kambing ? i am due for a visit in a month time.

              • @tempura: Nasi goreng is vegans meal.

Ever wonder why many vegans are still big? yes rice consumption…vegans will kill our corps sooner or later because of their heavy consumption.

                • @Taro Milk Tea: hang on … isn't kambing goat? lamb …

                  • -1

@tempura: Did I mention the kambing, whatever it is???

I just spoke nasi goreng as in general nasi goreng dish brah

  • Does it really take 9 days for delivery to Metro brisbane?

    • +1

The eBay estimate is just a very conservative approach, minus handling time, Australia post quotes 3-4 business days to post these to metro areas around Australia

  • Reasonable deal. But please don't say you are doing it to "give back to the community." Be honest and say it's business. It's so annoying to be blatantly lied to.

    • +7

Hi tightwad if you see our eBay history, we sold it for $15 previously and we are only reducing it since we post on Ozbargain.

  • -2

You dont need passport to get there.. just bring your marriage cert

    • and dotherightthing…

    • just don't go on Tinder, or you might get into trouble…

  • -3

better go Thailand, no corrupt police officers / islamic law

    • +5

Yeah, the Thai tourist police are the benchmark for integrity.

Except when they're not. Just don't crash a motorbike, or ride a jetski or not pay a scammer or need the police in any way and you'll be fine!

    • +1

I disagree. I travel to both countries frequently.
In Thailand, you are required to carry passport on you at all times (although I never do). I've seen Police hassle / fine people for not having passport on them.
Bali police in my experience are very nice, and don't look for trouble. Bali police are more likely to pull you over if your are on a scooter and ask you for your international licence. Both countries are my top destinations for a holiday.

      • in my conclusion, you've travelled lots.

  • +1

Do you really need people to email their passport details? That's a crazy security risk for people to provide to an eBay store…

    • +1

The OP is complying with the law by doing so. Many countries require a photo of your passport to activate a SIM card for security reasons.

However, whether the OP is legit or not is out of scope of this reply.

      • Hi Fever4shakin,

The email [email protected] is Three Indoensia's customer service. Please refer to their website at https://tri.co.id/contact.

      • It's entirely possible to activate it by yourself on the tri Indonesia website. I would trust Tri over an eBay seller, considering their parent company also owns half of Vodafone AU.

        • +3

Please note that you cannot activate the sim card online UNLESS you are an Indonesian citizen using KTP and KK, foreigners MUST register using passport, as BM said we are only complying with the law. If you proof me wrong I will be glad as it saves the customer of needing to send their passport.

Also please remember we are in no way affiliated with Tri, customer will need to send their passport data to TRI not to US.

          • @TravelKon: Fair point. I forgot how annoying Indonesia's new laws are now. You are correct.

I wonder if you would get better uptake if you sold those China Unicom SIMs (that also cover Indonesia but without registration).

            https://www.cuniq.com/au/data-card/asia/southeast-asia-8days…

I imagine some people would be hesitant to send passport photos to Tri.

Edit: yeah I see what you mean by email. Works also in store but that would be a terrible awful experience just getting there.

  • -2

Might be slightly convenient to have your phone between the airplane and going through customs. But it’s far cheaper to simply pick one up at the airport on the other side of customs. Takes under 5 minutes. Last time I paid IDR500,000 (~$5) for 8GB on telkomcel.

oh yeah and no passport required…

    • +1

Telkomsel has much better coverage. Completely different tier.

      • Yeah, not sure about the Tri coverage, but everyone seems to say Telkomsel is the best. The only other one I've used is Indosat and it was crap.

        • Where was Indosat crap? In densely populated cities I found it fine.

          • @bm: Riau, Sumatra

            • @ChickenTalon: Both places I haven't used Indosat. Ignoring that I haven't used them in either city, I've had no problem in my dual SIM phone with XL Axiata and Telcomsel anywhere in Indonesia I've travelled.

              • @bm: Riau isn't a city, it's a state within the island of Sumatra (also not a city). There is one major-ish city there, Pekanbaru, although it's pretty small.

          • @bm: Indosat was probably the best speeds on a carrier where I lived (Depok), but Telkomsel had easily superior coverage in buildings.

Indosat really showed lack of coverage as soon as I went to Jogja and couldn't make a call in the city centre.

As with all things in life the answer is "it depends", but there are entire regions where the only viable option is Telkomsel because they have the only coverage.

Tri was consistently craptastic wherever I went. Calls were fine but data was non existent outside of main roads and places. XL was a lot better than Indosat and Tri but for whatever reason it had no reception where I lived, same as Tri.

My Indonesian professors who do fieldwork around the remote areas all use Telkomsel. I ended up using Telkomsel + Indosat because Indosat usually had less congestion + Telkomsel's better coverage.

        • We would not disagree that Telkomsel has better coverage, but we did a test run in Bali and Jakarta, we found that Tri network is sufficient.

We would love to offer Telkomsel but unfortunately they do not allow foreigners to register via email, the only way to register is by going to their official store (which is not in the airport AFAIK).

          • @TravelKon: There is no need to go to an official store to get a working Telkomsel sim.
You can use one of the 5000 sim card sellers you will meet every 10 metres in Bali or Jakarta.

    • +2

There's free wifi at Denpasar and Jakarta once you land. If you can't go without data for 500m between the airport and buying a SIM card….

    • -1

And replying to myself because I can't edit. It was IDR50,000 , not 500,000

      • To convert to Aussie d̶o̶l̶l̶a̶r̶s̶ pesos, take off four zeros and a couple'a percent.

        10,000 is a bit over a buck

        50,000 is nearly $5.50

        100,000 is almost $11

    • +1

      500,000 IDR is $50

doubt you could get 8gb for $5 aud

  • +1

I travel to Indonesia often. I only would recommend Telkomsel. In Bali coverage is excellent. In Jakarta it can be good and bad, depending where you are.
It's easy to buy these sims there without passports or ID's. They will charge your a few dollars more, but really, if you give them a $2 tip its ok.

As for the sex ban, riding a motorbike without a valid international licence, without a helmet, while your are drunk, going wrong way up a one way street, is illegal too. But if you get caught, you will pay the police a negotiated sum of money, hop back on your bike and keep going. Try doing that in Australia.

    • I travel to Indonesia often

do you know which hawkers places to go in Jakarta? can you recommend?

  • +4

I recommend SIMPATI tourist pack (Telkomsel carrier) for AU$10 (IDR 100,000)
Worked everywhere for me 10GB valid 14 days.
    Link here

    • Hi, going to Bali in November and looking for a SIM. This looks good, is it available in the airport on arrival?

    • Great, this looks perfect… where can we buy them ?

  • $10 for 6gb of data for Bali.

3G/4G SIM Card (DPS Airport Pick Up) for Bali from XL https://www.klook.com/activity/16711

    • Yeah nah that's shit.

    • I've tried XL. Not good.

    • For $2 extra you are supporting Aussie business and have the convenience of having the sim card delivered in Australia :)

      • +1

But you need Passports, ID etc. Why the hassle? Easier give the guy $2 more, no need passport or ID.
He will also show you how to use the Sim card to check for balances etc.
And Telkomsel actually works really well in Bali.

  • Indo/bali!! one of the things i loved about it no one could contact you unless they knew your hotel. those days are gone.

  • I don't trust indonesian with my passport detail.

    • +1

Same. Except hotels, I never give my passport out to anyone.

    • why?

      • -2

Do you trust indonesian…?? I don't, have a few mates from Indo, very unreliable..ALL OF THEM.

        • +1

You probably shouldn't visit Indonesia/Bali then mate. I hate to break it to you but Indonesians are all over Indonesia.

          • -2

            @DonWilson: no shit

          • +1

@DonWilson: Bali is a country right?

            • +3

@Taro Milk Tea: Nah matey, Bali is an island somewhere north of Darwin, its actually part of New Guinea, ruled by King Bogan the 3rd.

        • They tend to stick together, those unreliable bunch… wink2…

          • @kolorijo: I agree with your statement until…

            wink2…

What was that supposed to mean?…are you flirting with me?

          • @kolorijo: how am I not surprised to see you in this conversation …

  • Hi, you mention Jakarta, will these work in Bali?

    • Yes it will work nationwide including Bali, in Jakarta you get an extra 1GB on top of the 5GB allowance

  • Got unlimited data and calls from telkimknsel locally for $20 on my last trip to Bali
    5GB is nothing

  • I travel to Indonesia regularly (used to live there) and unfortunately other than the convenience of having the sim card by the time u land, this may not be for u.
Indonesian telco operators have different tier levels of service (e.g. telkomsel has halo, simpati, kartu as) and you get what u pay for each tier (e.g. halo is postpaid, most expensive but has the fastest and most reliable connection)
Three (Tri in indo) is the smallest operator and probably has the WORST network in my experience. It is very slow data wise (regardless of 3/3.5/4g). Phone connection can also sometimes be patchy.
As much as XL (3rd biggest operator) and Tri are cheap, u get what u pay for (reliability and speed wise), so if u are okay with that… Go for it.
My advice would be to go for telkomsel as they are far more reliable in my experience. Unfortunately, you do have to deal with all the hassle of registration and buying sim card in the city (if u want to avoid exorbitant costs)

You can use the following 2017 test as a guide on different operator:
    https://akcdn.detik.net.id/community/media/visual/2018/03/15…

    • We keep telling people to use Telkomsel as it is by far the best service provider in Indonesia. Yet at the time of writing, 41 people still disagree. Obviously, even with good intentions, you can't help all people. It's a crazy idea to send your passport details over the internet to people you don't know.
Another travel tip for Indonesia (including bali), use the Citibank Plus card. I always use Link Mandiri ATM's. Try use the ATM with the 100,000 sticker on it. On top of this, the cards get frequently blocked by Citibank due to fraud detection, even though there's no fraud taken place. I take 2 cards with me.

  • You would be nuts to email your passport number and photo page to this mob just for a sim card.
That is enough to get your identity stolen.
I have bought multiple sim cards through Telkomsel and XL as late as May this year and never needed to provide passport details.
If that has changed, go to a regular seller and watch the seller like a hawk to make sure your details are not recorded outside the registration process.

    • Please read the post carefully, we do not retrieve the passport details as they are to sent to the network provider (Tri). It is the law that all sim card has to be registered with an ID, foreigners can only use their passport.

      • -1

By "this mob" I was referring to Tri, the network provider.
Why take the risk of sending your passport photo page to anyone just for a sim you can buy anywhere in Bali?
Go to a local provider in Bali. They will insert the sim into your phone and enter the details on your phone as you watch over the counter.
They won't photocopy your passport page or even write down your details.
No need to have your photo page scanned and stored somewhere.

        • If that is your opinion that is fine, we have no comment on this as this is the official way to actually register the sim card.

        • I think op is just trying to offer a product in a way that is acceptable to Indonesian mobile operators and regulators.
Even if u r in indonesia, they are obliged to sight ur ID somehow. This may not be done by small vendors (and is indeed a silly regulation, like many other regulations), but everyone has to play by this silly rules.
Off course we can always go to get the sim card from a roadside somewhere and risk the scenario that the number is blocked from usage the next day.

          • @aussie bargain: The problem is sending your passport photo page like that is not acceptable to maintain basic identity security.
Even if the small vendors want to site your details, they don't write them down and they don't scan your passport photo page and save it, ready to be sent off to some Nigerian scammer.
I have registered these sim cards myself, entering all sorts of crap and never been blocked the next day.

  • Passport details, your mob, oz address and photo too? Might as well hand over your bank details & TFN!

Sorry OP, you got big data and cheap, but I rather pay more with Sims Direct, no question asked.

    • Passport details, your mob, oz address and photo too? Might as well hand over your bank details & TFN!

this is not something that should be addressed to the OP; perhaps to the Indonesian judiciary system?

      • I am in Straya atm.

  • I wonder if Tri will or have capability to verify passport details. I mean I could be Ned Kelly.

    • They can't. Just don't be Brenton Tarrant.
