Yes, you can do all of that. Set up a routine which turns off specific devices in the Google Home app, and another to turn them back on. You choose the devices that it happens to. Also gives you the ability to turn off and on whenever you want.

Might be worth a look at this one if there is multiples in the same area: https://www.amazon.com.au/Protector-Charging-Smartphone-Comp…

I have one for my bedside table for my lamp, speakers, and then USB for charging other things.

  • Good price. No deal

    energy monitor?

    • +1

      Not this one, no.

  • Can we still use the other powerpoint once plug it in on a double powerpoint? (as not clear from the bunnings video)
    My guess is NO?

    • +3

They're pretty skinny. If you have a standard sized plug for the other powerpoint then you should be okay. I was able to fit 2 of these plus 2 normal plugs on a 4 plug board, like this: [Brilliant][standard][Brilliant][Standard]
Probably wont' be able to fit an adapter next to it though

      https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/118506/72636/photopict…

My double powerpoint has 1x Smart plug and 1 x power lead with no issues.

      • how do you upload a pic to ozb?

        • +1

First log in to Ozbargain, then go to MY ACCOUNT, then select FILES, then UPLOAD NEW FILE, then browse and select your photo you want to upload. When uploaded, it should appear as a small thumbnail in the bottom half of the screen. Click on the photo to make it larger. COPY the address of the photo from the address bar. Then PASTE the photo address into any ozbargain comment. There might be a better way to upload photos, but thats the way I do it.

The only minus (other th asn it being made in China) is that the USB charger only outputs 1,500 mAh (1.5 Ah) which is not enough to fast charge new devices with the fast charging feature (which requires 2.4 or 2.5 Ah for the "slowest" Samsung fast charger).

I'm not sure why they did that, since the whole device uses 10 Amps ( maximum output from a standard power socket), do they need 7.5 Ah (1,800 Watts) for the WiFi?

    Btw that's one power-hungry gadget!

hmm what other plugs are NOT made in China?

mAh/Ah is a measure of charge, ie used when rating batteries. In this instance it being a USB charger you use mA/A which is a measure of electrical current.

I'm not sure why they did that

Well to shave a few cents off the BOM. Multiply that by a gazillion and it translates to more profit. Plus once the sales slow down, they can always come up with an 'improved' 2.4A output version and follow that up by QC2/3/4 and so on. It's just how manufacturers milk the market.

since the whole device uses 10 Amps

It doesn't actually uses 10A it's just rated/beefy enough so you can use it with devices up to 10A.

do they need 7.5 Ah (1,800 Watts) for the WiFi?

Not sure where you got that figure from. Did you take 10A (from outlet) minus 2.5A (from USB)? Assuming the USB does outputs 2.5A, you can't calculate it like that as the outlet is rated at 240V vs 5V for the USB.

      Btw that's one power-hungry gadget!

It's not. I don't have one to measure the idle/standby current draw but it's definitely not considered power hungry.

Some interesting uses. I don't have this one specifically, but use one to shutoff the 3D printer once it's finished. have also used it to control the Christmas lights.

    • Christmas lights is going to be an excellent use, I never trust the timers and things built in.

Pretty sure these can be flashed with Tasmota. A custom firmware which greatly extends capabilities and removes reliance on cloud services. Haven't tried myself, but I'd like to try.

They sure can. Bought/flashed 5, working via MQTT with HA - they're Brilliant :)

      • +1

        Excellent!!!

      • what extra capabilites does it offer?

    • I've tried flashing one of these with Tasmota, with no luck. I tried the over-the-air method (tuya convert), and it didn't work. Then tried hard-wired flashing it and it flashed, but doesn't work. Just a warning.

      • Err yes it does… Hold down the button till it flashes red, then do your normal tuya-convert steps…

        • How recently did you purchase your plugs and did you do the OTA method?

  • Don’t think any of the Bunnings have them in stock.i tried brand new Local Bunnings opened last Friday and they didn’t have that in stock either.
Managed to get few from last promo and can confirm they works great with both Alexa and google home.

    • Has anyone got these running with Telstra's NBN Gen 2 modem?
I tried to install them at my daughter's place (using Telstra's Gen2 NBN modem) and they wouldn't connect.
      Thanks

    • From what I remember these plugs only run on 2.4GHz wifi rather than 5GHz. Not sure how your modem is configured, but I've got 2.4 and 5GHz both setup at my home for comparability and better coverage with 2.4GHz.

      • Yes both 2.4 & 5 GHz on.

    • +1

The problem might not be caused by the modem or wifi. Are you trying with Brilliant's own Brilliant Smart app? If so, try Smart Life app by Tuya instead. I couldn't get it to connect using Brilliant's own app after a fair bit of playing around. From other people's comments, I tried Tuya's app and it connected first go.

    • I couldn’t connect to my Gen2 modem either.

Ended up setting another network just for these plugs.

  • Has anyone used Tasker to command these units?

  • Are there hardwired smart outlets available?

  • No stock of these at my local Bunnings (Port Macquarie) unfortunately. I grabbed some of the Shopping Square 2 for $25.95 deal but Tuya-Convert doesn't want to run on them. :-(

  • How does it compare to the arlec smart home starter kit for $49 (has two led globes and two wifi GPOs

  • Says stock at Box Hill VIC but NONE there on the weekend :(

Now $10 if you can find any..
