[Switch] Damsel $6.79 (Was $16.99, 60% off) @ Nintendo eShop

1000

Hello!

We're Screwtape Studios, a small indie studio located in Brisbane, and would like to let you know our game 'Damsel' is currently on sale in the Nintendo eShop.

Damsel is a challenging fast-paced action platformer. Experience a dark cartoon world come to life as frenetic gameplay meets comic book visuals and storytelling. Dash through beautiful arenas vanquishing vampires, rescuing hostages, disarming bombs, hacking servers and much more.

Nintendo Switch Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZZDhjHcqZY

If you enjoy challenging platformers, games that feel awesome to speedrun or you're about maximising that score then you may want to sink your teeth into Damsel!

Awards:

Finalist - The Guest Plate, NZ Game Awards, 2019
Winner - Indie Scene Award, DASH Awards, 2018
Finalist - Independent Game of the Year, Australian Game Awards, 2018
Finalist - Australian Developed GOTY, Australian Game Awards, 2018
Winner - PC Game of the Year, Brisbane Game Awards, 2018
Official Selection - Made with Unity, Unite Melbourne, 2016
Official Selection - PAX Rising, PAX East, 2016

Also we're not a fan of the 'Switch tax' or 'Australia games tax', so we made the game the same price on all platforms as well as the same here in Aus as the US. ;)

If you have any questions about Damsel please feel free to ask. Being a small indie team is very challenging so we really do appreciate the local support.

PS if anyone is going by PAX Aus be sure to come and say hi!

Cheers,
Kaydos (Marketing, PR and Community Management - Screwtape Studios)

Well done!, I will be picking this one up. :)

      Thanks <3

Not sure this is my type of game but have an upvote anyway for what looks like a well made Australian game at a good price. And being up front about association.

    • Thanks we appreciate it! :)

Looks like Celeste + Dead Cells! Well done guys. Love to support Aussie developers. Will grab a copy… even though this is not my kinda game.

    • +2

Aw thanks! Hopefully with a bit of time it can become your kind of game. :)

Looks good but I'm not hardcore enough. I see "challenging gameplay" and run away these days

    • +3

The main focus is hard but we have implemented a 'chill-out mode' that stops you from dying (although you can still fail a mission by shooting a hostage or a time bomb exploding) making the game easier. I'm in a similar boat personally - I prefer to always feel like I'm making progress. :)

+1 for the pricing on the switch, I've not looked into it but I'm assuming Nintendo takes a larger cut of the pie than other platforms and that explains the unusually high game prices?

    Buying to support the boys

The SamuraiPunk devs posted in a thread yesterday that it's 30%, which is pretty standard.

    • +3

Hey, 30% is standard across the board (Epic being a notable exception), however usually games are marked up on the Switch because 1) typically higher development costs and 2) traditionally Switch/Nintendo fans are willing to pay a higher premium - although this seems to be shifting as the customer base increases.

      • Does the Switch have higher dev costs? I know nothing about game development or coding but I thought unity would help make switch ports a similar process as other consoles. simplifying all the hard work I figured unity helps with porting it while you need a Switch dev kit and add in all the switch API stuff.

I'm not a programmer myself, but what I gather it may take longer to optimise, as well as earlier games on the Switch (or games a long time in development) wouldn't have the compatibility compared to recent games. With the success of the Switch I think it also altered the plans of many game companies so they could bring their game to the Switch, which led to the more business-sided development costs.

However I think my second point (earlier Nintendo Switch fans willing to pay a higher price) probably is the most dominant reason in most cases.

  • Thanks, I bought it. Hope myself or the kids enjoy it

    • +1

Cheers, hope you all do! (Maybe try chill-out mode for the kids)

  • Met you guys at PAX last year! Psyched to pick this up for Switch now!

    • Aw thanks so much for stopping by our booth last year! :D

  • Wait, from what I can see this is $16.99 USD and also $16.99 AUD. You are losing out on some USD/AUD conversation rate profits there.

    • +1

      Yes, absolutely we are.

We're Australian, we're gamers, and we wanted to give back to our local community. Australia seems to often gets the short-end of the stick so this time we decided to give ourselves a victory of sorts.

    • we made the game the same price on all platforms as well as the same here in Aus as the US. ;)

      • Yeah, I read that but I’d have assumed that meant more along the lines of “it’s the same price as the US with currency conversation”. Most games are converted and still dearer. Take borderlands 3 on Xbox store for example, it’s ~$89 AUD in USA but is $99 AUD in Australia.

        • $9 of that is straight GST though, so I feel like Borderlands is actually pretty even in that respect.

          • +1

@Alzori: You might be right. I forget that America likes to advertise their prices without sales tax. $59 USD might be the price without sales tax.

  • Awesome to see the game dev scene is growing in Australia.

    • +4

Hey, sorry this might be a bit too in depth for a simple comment, but speaking for Brisbane personally it seems to not be growing, nor shrinking but in a weird state of flux. Unfortunately we had Half Brick (Fruit Ninja devs) lay off a large part of their team, and more recently Defiant Development (Hand of Fate devs) shift into caretaker mode. However we are seeing some success with smaller teams such as Witchbeam with the upcoming title 'Unpacking'.

      • Thank you for that informative response.

      • My kids enjoyed fruit ninja and myself assault android cactus.

      • +1

Yeah, hearing the Hand of Fate devs step back was a bit of a shock. They’d been doing interesting stuff.

        • Yeah it really shook the local Brisbane community (and Aus as a whole). It hit close to heart to our team as our two key members had previously worked quite a bit with Defiant.

As the ACCC points out, it's hard to see why any international companies would base themselves here with the atrocious electricity prices and the severe damage to the entire economy that this is causing.

  • Bought it, thanks guys

    • Thanks! Hope you enjoy it. :)

  • I just bought it. I like to support local and small devs prodcuing good games. Also Hollow Knight is making me pull my hair out so might need to give it a rest and play some Damsel instead :-)

    • You sound like a real Game Dev Tycoon. You seem like you have some real City of Brass. The type of person that really enjoys some quality Golf with Friends.

      • Lol. I just reminded myself that I still haven’t played Paradigm.

    • Thank you! Haha tell me about it - I used to have a full head of hair and now nothing!

  • Bought just to support the Australian game dev scene!

    • Thanks, we appreciate the support! :D

  • bought just because its local too ;)

    • Awesome - thank you!

  • Add another to the support because they're Aussie!

Well done lads, look forward to playing it.

    • Thanks, hope you enjoy it! :)

  • Really dislike platformers at my age (too difficult) but I'll pick it up to support local indie developers.

    • Thanks, really appreciate your support - PS there's a chill-out mode that can make it a bit easier. :)

  • Very cool looking game, thanks for posting.

    • Cheers! :)

  • bought it! cheers!

    • Thanks! Enjoy!
