The new iPhone's have Wireless 6 but do not have 5G support. Definitely a skip year unless you can upgrade with your plan for relatively cheap. Across the board 2019 has been a gap year for mobile phones, 2020 we will see the good stuff.

    • +1

Except… everyone said the exact same thing last year…

      • I am not sure about last year, but I definitely said the same thing earlier this year when Samsung(?) released its 2019 models with no 5G capability. It's a lot more significant if you live in a major city as 5G will get to those people first and relatively soon.

People like myself in the sticks will need to wait longer before we have something better than NBN and the need for a 5G enabled phone becomes more appealing.

If you are on a plan that allows you to upgrade each year I would do it, always nice having the latest and greatest. For me, I buy phones outright so I will wait for one that has Wireless 6 and 5G so I know I am ready when it rolls out.

  • I am staying with my XS Max 512gb for now.

  • +7

iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max
    Starting at $1749

    Seriously, just wtf.

    • +9

      thats for 64gb too..

an extra $250 to jump up to 256. What a joke

      • And yet people still buy them….

    • -1

Yeah I know I mean Samsung’s and high end Huawei’s are
      Much cheaper…… oh wait…. 🙃

      • +6

To me, those are equally wtf.

    • +4

We spend more time on/using (about 10x) our smartphones than watching tv. We can’t justify paying $1800 on a tv, but may for a smartphone.

      • +5

I've actually thought the same thing myself too. Maybe I'm just old and stuck in the 90's/2000's paradigm of a mobile phone being a tool/appliance, than what it currently is, which is an extremely miniaturized high power computing device.

I wouldn't balk at a $1,800 price for a laptop, and I should maybe start thinking of mobile phones in the same way.

        • Btw. We use our smartphones for work. An instant $1800 write-off is a bonus.

          • +5

            @whooah1979: It’s not an instant $1800 write off….

I’m not sure if you’re talking about yourself or generally for everyone anyway

      • -1

While what you say makes sense.
I think the big difference when spending $1500+ on a smart-phone is it is a mobile device, meaning you take it out with you all the time, and therefore there is a much higher risk of damaging it / breaking it or losing it.
A $1500+ TV stays indoors, is rarely moved and stays put with the least likelihood or accidental damage. And a $1500+ laptop (as HighAndDry mentioned) is a larger device which is easier to handle and less mobile / portable compared to a smart-phone therefore less likely to be lost of damaged.

From my part, I just find it difficult to justify spending $1500+ on something which is easily misplaced / accidentally damaged and ‘droppable’.
As you said we spend a lot more time on our phones, and each time it is taken out of the pocket or placed somewhere, there is that risk of it losing its value.
I am a happy owner of an iPhone SE since 2016, which was the cheapest model at the time and just find it hard to understand spending any more than necessary on a portable device which goes out with you on a daily basis.
It may also be worth mentioning, even if I had the iPhone X etc since 2016, my use of the phone would have been exactly the same as it has been with the iPhone SE.

        • All of your concerns are alleviated by getting AppleCare+ or equivalent on other devices. Being afraid of damage isn’t a reason to avoid enjoying something. Every time you cross the street is a potential life altering/ending experience.

I believe if you had the X over an SE your use would not the same. The hardware and large screen will lend itself to you using it more and more for more and more things. Possibly not but quite likely.

Simple example: I didn’t watch Netflix on my 5S. I do on my X.

          • @Hybroid: From my memory Apple Care was quite expensive & on-going cost (and on top of the $1500+ initial cost), and all it does is reduce the prices you pay for repairs.

For me it is more about the cost of something, and it’s basic function.
I am sure there are a few young ‘tech’ entrepreneurs who have the top model iPhone, and actually use it to the edge of its ability (App’s / business tasks / creating media / publishing content etc).
But I am also quite sure most average consumers will be using it as a phone mainly, and perform common tasks like reminders / banking / social media etc.
And the rest would be occasionally take a photo a day, and edit it maybe once a week.

Myself I am probably on the light-side of smart-phone use, consisting of Phone, messages, common tasks (reminders / banking etc) and listening to music.
For the rest like web-browsing, YouTube and editing photos, I do with the budget iPad.

        • Easily misplaced? Who just leaves their smartphone somewhere.
Me personally, I have a conscious awareness whenever it's not in my pocket.

I wouldn't say they're easily damaged either. With a case they generally hold up from the most thoughtless drops.

          • @Sage: Just saying compared to a Television or a Laptop.
I am a very careful person myself, but you would be surprised how many clumsy / forgetful busy people there are out there, and on top of that the new glass back design means it’s twice as easy to crack your phone.
The only way around it is with an expensive bulky case, and most will go for the sleek minimal case due to its low weight / bulk & appearance.

Here are a few I can think of:
            - taking your phone out of your pocket at a wharf to take a photo and having it drop in deep water.
            - leaving your phone on the roof of your car and driving off.
            - having your phone fall out of your pocket and running over it with your car.
            - leaving it on a table, only to have children get their hands on it and drop it.

    • more storage and it costs $2,499.00.

Im very confused about apple tv+ as well. The morning show and for all man kind look like they could be really good. The others all look really very meh. SEE looks like an absolute joke of a show as well. Im wondering what kind of non-original content they will have, especially compared to netflix - or what will leave netflix to go to ATV+.

At least its bundled so that you dont actually need to pay for it - but from the shorts i cant imagine ill be using it an awful lot.

Dont think ill be looking at Arcade either.

  • +11

Iphones are starting to feel like text book ever year a new edition comes out but nothing really changes….

    • +1

Yep, they certainly haven't had any real innovations for some time.

      • So, CPU upgrade still being fastest in the industry, new materials and process for the glass unit, additional ultrawide camera, ability to record with all cameras at once, faster charger, night mode improvements, U1 chip with item tracking, always-on Apple Watch etc are all deemed not innovations? They may not appeal to you or be a big deal to you but they’re, by definition, innovations. They may not even be industry firsts and could be superseded by other cheaper products but that doesn’t mean they’re not innovations. We’ve just gotten used to the annual gimmick addons.

        • +1

I was mainly referring to new innovative products.
Whilst these changes are great, I suspect the average person doesn't see the value in changing & its "just another iphone".

        • -1

when you have to convince someone that a slight change is "by definition, innovation"….. you're justifying why you continue to rip yourself off

I am planning to buy Apple iPhone 11 pro (256GB) + Watch series 5 (GPS). Just want to know few things.
    1) Will there be any discounts/offers if I wait 1 more month to buy?
    2) I am a android user and never used iOS before. Will it be worth for me to spend approx $2648 on iPhone compared to android?
(Just forced to buy iPhone because of it's watch, no current and upcoming android watch can beat apple watch).
    3) Upon checking iPhone and watch tech config, I cannot able to find mAh of the battery. Can anyone tell the battery size. Why apple mentions battery size in terms of hours only?

      1. wait till they hit gumtree.
      2. if you have other apple products ie mac, ipad sure. i got sick of my AW4 just sold it, bit of a nerdy thing imo and everyman and his dog wearing the same watch now lol.
      3. If you get the max battery will be better than the smaller, same as the 8/8plus and Xs/Xs max. Or just the 11, Xr replacement will be good.
    • 3) Upon checking iPhone and watch tech config, I cannot able to find mAh of the battery. Can anyone tell the battery size. Why apple mentions battery size in terms of hours only?

    • Yeah this is a troll comment. Don’t bite guys.

    • -1
      1. Apple don't do their retailers any favours.
      2. No. Ditch the watch, not worth it for $2648
      3. Generally so you can't compare Apples with Mangos. eg Retina Display.
  • +2

Ugh. Not planning on updating from my X for this - those 3 cameras at the back are just fugly.

Funny, prior to the X I used to update religiously, every year - buying outright. Now I'm like… yeah, nah.

I do have to upgrade mum's 6 as it will no longer be supported, so the 8 dropping in price is the only good thing to come out of this new phone release.

    • +1

Same have had every iPhone since the 4S, sold a XR and XS max in last month got sick of the sizes, using a $50 SE now lol, apart from the screen size and camera this little guy does the same as newer ones. With CarPlay now it's all i need in a phone.

    • +2

Bought the 256Gb X on release day expecting it to last 3 years. It’s still as fast as day 1 so it may last even longer…

      • A sound policy. If it does the business why not keep it rocking. I won’t less go of my XS until the 12 comes out and only then if it’s 5G capable on only then if I can think of a reason to use 5G other than 4K pron.

    • Nevermind

    • Same here. In fact after seeing this I went into Apple yesterday and got my battery replaced for free so it'll happily last another year.
Before this I had changed my phone yearly!

  • +2

Those are pretty slick product pages.

    • +1

I was thinking the same thing. Clever.

      • Me three - very fancy!

  • I still use my second hand $120 Apple Watch Series 1 from Facebook marketplace and second hand $240 iPhone 7 32GB that was supposedly locked to Optus but it isn’t haha and these prices for flagship to keep up with the Jones’s mind boggles me. My 32GB internal storage is really a tight storage situation. 64GB is still doable on my Meizu SamsungS7 specced android phone. But I do wish I could splurge on a new iPhone XR or the new 11 and upgrade my Apple Watch. My iPhone 7 32GB cost AU$1,079 when it released :O

    • +3

The good thing about iPhones, and Apple kinda shoot themselves in the foot, is that the iPhone 7 is still a really usable phone because of the constant updates.

      • 100% I got 5 years out of my 4S, and my 3 year-old 7 is looking like achieving that easily!

  • According to GSM Arena, the only difference from the iPad 2018 (6th Gen) and the iPad 10.2 (7th Gen) is the screen size

    • Its true. The 7th gen also has a dock connector, if you are into that. The entry price is higher though.

  • Merged from iPhone Price Increase for Australia

I don't use iPhone but I'm very angry at this, why does aus always get screwed? Now every other phone will follow. Exchange rate barely moved, still the same 0.68-0.69 thats been around for years. We get gouged on every electronic, are the retailers or the manufacturers behind this? Sky high real estate $$$ bubble and price gouge on almost every imported product. Maybe labour should of won and curbed this (profanity) real estate BS thats rebounding.

alot more honorable than having a masters in debating

        • +1

I thought it was a mass debate as to whether should have a masters in debating?

    • +2

maybe labour should of won and curbed this f***ing real estate BS thats rebounding.

      Shoulda, coulda, woulda…but didnt

      • Is the op telling us that the labor party had an hidden agenda - to introduce price controls to mobile phone pricing?

        Of course not.

So how would electing them have fixed this first world issue?

        • +1

because last time labor were in govt we had the best exchange rate to usd?

    • +1

When you add sales tax and then multiple by the exchange rate, the base us model comes to 1600aud for the 11Pro; whereas we pay 1750aud for the local version. So i don't believe we are getting ripped off when you take into account our minimum wage level is much higher than the US. But thats my take, you may of based your reasoning on something else

      • Wouldnt the 1600 to 1100, difference of 500 account for this difference in salary? Isnt that why the US dollar is stronger? They get paid less because the curreny is stronger?

General living expenses in the US are also a lot lower than Aus.

        • Short answer Not really
Long answer it forms a part of the parity but not a main factor

    • You need a long term memory refresh

13th Sept last year it was .71 Not .68

      https://www.xe.com/currencycharts/?from=AUD&to=USD&view=1Y

(from that you will see with ups and downs its also trended down in last year)

    • -1

doesnt matter what price they put, there will be people camping days and nights in front of the store on 1st day

    • +1

      Solved: Don't buy it.

    • +4

Consumer guarantee law in Australia might be a cause of higher prices.

Apple might need to be responsible for warranty for up to 3 years on phones where they have a 12/18 month responsibility in other markets.

    • +3

      "Maybe labour should of won"

What is this 'labour' you speak of?

    • Why so angry ? Don't buy it.

    • I know in today's culture everything is an outrage but its a product you're not going to buy so why care?

Just leave more $1000 monitor stands for everyone else.

    • +3

iPhone 11 Pro is USD $1000 = AUD $1603 + 10% GST or Sales Tax = AUD $1763. Apple AU is selling $1749.

Yeah, expensive phone, but Australia isn't getting uniquely screwed. Blame the exchange rate.

    • +5

iPhone 11 is USD$699 - does not include tax - roughly AUD$1020. WITHOUT TAX. With tax, it's roughly USD$750 in California.

      It's AUD$1199 in Australia - roughly USD$825 with tax.

So we're looking at maybe an additional USD$75 for the Australian product, which comes with far, far superior Consumer Law protections than the USA does. Not too much of a trade-off for me, personally ¯_(ツ)_/¯. Not that I'm going to buy this iPhone, I'm just saying, the rip off ain't that bad!

      • Stop your logic and let the kid have a political rant.

        • +1

Woah, I could never disagree with a "Labor should [have] won" comment, but I just wanted them to know the prices aren't actually that ridiculous, compared to the USA.

  • -4

    nice paperweights

    • +1

You must be pretty damn rich to use an iphone as a paper weight

      (i didn't neg you)

  • +2

I was pleased to see Apple Arcade having a reasonable price (8 AUD monthly). Not sure if I am going to use it but still seems to be a good value who is into mobile games.

    • Though I wonder what the price of In-app purchases will be?

      • +1

Apple Arcade has no in app purchases. There is also a 1 month free trial.

  • +1
  • -1

Damn $1750 for a pro is ridiculous, even with the decline in the value of the Australian dollar.

Also that camera bump is hella ugly

    • It is getting slammed on various sites, but it is just a square - big deal, cover on and you won't even notice.

    • +1

The pixel 4 is getting the same square.

  • Received an email from Studio Proper (I'm a huge fan of their cases) advertising the new iPad for $440 ($529 at Apple).
Is this a legit Aussie version iPad ? Or are they doing some grey import dodgy thingymadealio ? (Bit of a noob with this stuff)

    https://www.studioproper.com.au/products/apple-ipad-10-2-7th…

    • Now its at $510aud. Would have been a good buy at $440.

Mixed reviews on trustpilot etc. Think id get from apple or a b&m

  • +1

Well, Apple will have to try hard to attract new customers in the next years. They locked their customers in Apple eco-system pretty well but I am not sure if it is enough with huge innovations in Android smartphones.

    • The screen is great on the XR, people get sucked in to OLED*/DPI too easily.

      *I'm a huge fan of OLED TV's.

      • -6

The problem is calling last year budget phone as this years current flagship line

        • +2

The 11 isn’t a flagship. It’s more a midrange and the Pro max the flagship.

  • -4

The iPhone really did die with Steve didn't it

  • Anyone know if any JB stores in Melbourne are going to be taking pre-orders for the new iPhones? And if so, when? Do they usually take full payment up front or partial payment until you pick up from the store?

We now know Trump protected Apple by banning Huawei. For sure its products are no longer interesting nor have any innovation with high price points.

The more repeated disappointments drive people away to go to android

    • +2

Trump is protecting American jobs. There is nothing wrong with that.

      • Are Apple products made in America?

      • +1

There is nothing wrong with that.

in fact, it’s his job, given most Americans need jobs in America.

      • Yeah but if Apple was still the old one we knew probably don't need to

If your products are competitive and price correctly and gaining sales that's no need to put tariffs or ban on imported products.

It's cause Huawei exceeds Apple on smartphone and the Americans are scared of losing jobs

Using politics is a dirty tactic to win over trading wars and artificially boost employment over protecting own population.
