Hi,

I got fibre optic connection that I had contract of paying $40 per month for couple of months now, today I got an email from the ISP saying due to the increased of supplier cost we have to increase your monthly to $70 per month from next month?!?!
Anyone else got the same email from their ISP? crazy.
Thoughts?
Thanks.

I think they increased it by $30/month.

    • +1

thats almost double of what i signed up to, shocking.

      • +10

Are you under contract to stay with them? If not, you own this situation. You can do what they told ya or be a renegade of funk.

        • +3

yes, but these contracts dont mean a thing to them, if i wanted to exit the contract i would have to pay, but they wont pay me if they want me to exit the contract.

          • +3

@newbiesh: They don't want you to exit anything; they just want your moolah. Again, are you under contract to stay with them?

          • +8

@newbiesh: if you're in a fixed contract, they're obliged to supply the service to you at the agreed price
check the wordings on your contract

      • +3

        I would say it's closer to a 75% increase

    • It is a $30 per month increase.

      • +1

Or 75% if you prefer to think of it that way.

  • +6

They changed the price so they broke the contract? Not you.

    • +2

Every RSP include clauses that may allow them to increase prices after giving their customers a 30 day notice.

      • +13

Yeah, but you then have a right to cancel the contract.

I find it impossible to believe that a customer would still be bound by the original contract when the telco has 'broken' the contract by increasing the price.

        • +2

Yeah, but you then have a right to cancel the contract.

          That is what normally happens.

The RSP gives the customer a 30 day notice and the customer an opportunity to leave without paying an exit fee.

Op, could you please link the t&c?

          • +2

@whooah1979: correct except for Energy companies that don't need to give any notice of an increase in advance (in fact they can tell you 30 days after the change has happened).

            • +1

@singingwolf: Madness isn’t it! Oh by the way, the last month we increased our prices to a bajillion per unit. Sucks to be you. Happened to me, 77% increase (thanks click!) and couldn’t do squat boy did I kick up a stink!

            • @singingwolf: I'm in NSW, and all the energy contracts I've seen don't have any exit fees.

I don't know if exit fees apply in other states, but at least in NSW, a customer can always leave without penalty if they don't like the new rates.

      • +6

This is all strangely reminiscent of when premier Kennett privatized all of Victoria’s utilities because the competition will mean that “the consumer will be far better off”. Today, even if you do switch a provider/supplier for a better deal, you are still far worse off.

        • Worse off compared to what? 20 years ago?

          • +3

@gimme: Pick any day between now and then.

            • @Ozpit: How does Aus compare to the rest of the developed world, say UK or US?

        • Rubbish. Vic Prices are comparable to any government owned power supply states.

          • @diddy50: Ever wondered why the government-owned power supply states brought their rates up to parity with the privateer states? Apart from because they can?

        • +1

Privatization is a neo-liberal con. It only enriches mates of the government.

        • -2

This sort of stuff gets run off a lot, but I've never seen any evidence supporting it. What I have seen is evidence showing that the states who privatised their transmission and distribution infrastructure a while ago (Vic and SA) have significantly more efficient T&D operators than the states that didn't or did only recently, and therefore people in those states pay lower T&D tariffs.

  • +11

Don't like it? Call them and discuss.

    • +64

Such absurdly radical suggestions have no place on OzBargain.

      • +1

        Bikies should've been option 1

        • -1

This joke should’ve been the last option. I mean only when you desperately want to participate but cannot come up with anything funny.

    • I think the point is that they don’t want to leave to another ISP - they’d like to stay but at the $40 pricepoint which is no longer available.

      • Talking to your ISP about a email they sent you doesn't mean you have to leave.

    • Is this “my school is cooler than your school” kind of thing?

      • People b1tching about their ISP is what Whirlpool is famous for, so OP's post is much better suited for that forum rather than here. It's highly likely someone else has posted the same thing about the same ISP there already, so no need to start sh1t here.

        • You can only control what you own or tell your opinion nicely when asked about things that don’t concern you.

  • +2

What sort of fibre connection only costs $40 per month????

    • Probably just talking about NBN.

    • -4

trust me, back in the day when i joined fibre connection, like 2 years ago all of them were around 40$ and 39$ i dont know whats the price increases with all ISPs

      • +14

You say $40 per month for a couple of months and also that you got the connection 2 years ago.

        Confusing

      • +1

If they kept it at $40 per month they would probably be bankrupt. NBN charges high prices to the RSPs.

    • +1

      Opticomm.
OP apparently went with the cheapest plan possible with a paltry 90GB data allowance (because it's an "invesement proeprty") and is now being pushed onto an unlimited plan, hence the price increase. Basically having a whinge about having to pay $70/mth for unlimited data over FTTP.

  • is it for the same plan? are they discontinuing the old plan and want to migrate you ok a new plan?

like from the old 12mbps plan to 50mbps plan?

    • -4

the 40$ plan i have has limit data and the 70$ is unlimited

      • +6

Ahh so it's not simply a price increase, it's a complete plan change.
Are you actually on an NBN plan currently? This sounds like when a person is migrated to NBN for the first time. Usually it involves a price increase.

      • +3

That is actually a very different story to your post. So they haven't increased your plan price, they have said they are discontinuing the plan you are on and hence you would have to move to the unlimited plan. That should also mean though you can terminate the contract and go elsewhere should you wish.

  • +22

Your last post said you were paying $80/mth.
    If you're on $70/mth now that's a $10 discount so stop complaining.
Edit: OP's posts are basically all troll posts, suggest everyone ignore.

    • +2

Yeah he was on $59 plan then moved to NBN which was $80. Now he's saying the plan is $40 going to $70? Think he's lost his mind.

    • -7

mate this one is an invesement proeprty, the other one was my own.

      • +18

Poor investment strategy to pay for tenant's utilities.

        • +2

Or decent human being? Sometimes keeping tenants happy and in the house is cheaper than squeezing every dime out of them, having a high turnover and a ruined property because no one gave a toss about it.

It’s like those morons that keep a house on the market waiting for that extra 5 grand they wanted for it. Not realising they are paying 1500 a month in interest, actually losing money over the 6 months it takes.

          Side rant over lol.

          • @Jcww: OP was paying $40/mth for only 90GB of data and is now complaining about paying $70/mth for unlimited… Does that sound like someone who cares about their tenants?

        • -6

we not talking about investments here.

        • maybe the OP is operating a share house or an AirBnB

    • I got fibre optic connection that I had contract of paying $40 per month for couple of months now

So, OP had this contract for a couple of months?

trust me, back in the day when i joined fibre connection, like 2 years ago all of them were around 40$ and 39$ i dont know whats the price increases with all ISPs

Or is it a 2yr old expired contract?

      ..

I think ssquid might be onto it.

      • yes less than a year.

  • +2

nbn Co did increase the cvc
If you are happy where you are, stay
If not, go elsewhere, but check their prices too as they would/will go up as well

    • +1

      they all went up

      • +1

        Nope! Not all.
At least not all so far.

In fact FlipConnect reduced the cost of their cheapest (Value 12) plan to $39.95 for NBN 12 with unlimited data as long as you pay one month in advance.
And its a no lock in contract (month to month)
Its now the best value NBN plan on the market!

And currently Belong's 30 Mbps unlimited Starter plan is still $55/mth on a 12 month contract representing the best value plan offering 25 Mbps or more.

        So there you have it.
2 ISPs with either unchanged or reduced fees and currently offering the best value plans on the market.

So if you have copped an increase here is your chance to switch to much better value.

  • +9

    crazy.
    Thoughts?

My thoughts are that this post is so full of holes that it should be taken down.

  • Tell them to stick it! Go back to dialup and save big $$$$.

  • +2

Exetel was featured here a couple of months ago for thier $59/mth unlimited NBN 50 plan.
A couple of weeks ago I saw it increased to $65 and now its $70

Spintel too had a $45/mth deal for NBN12 / 500GB and its disappeared.
Now their cheapest plan is $50/mth for just 200GB on NBN 12.
But their unlimited NBN50 plan is presently unchanged at $65 which now makes them a better deal than Exetel.
I have been with Spintel since 2012 and never had a price increase so a much safer deal too.

    So in reply to OP

YES we are seeing prices increasing for NBN plans

Cheapest alternative presently is to consider going with a 4G/ 250GB / Up to 12Mbps home wireless broadband with either Exetel or Spintel for only $40/mth
And you can take the 4G modem with you anywhere in Australia so long as you can plug the modem into a power point and have access to the Optus 4G 2300Mhz network.

    • I signed up with Exetel in May for $59.99/mth on 500GB NBN 50plan which is on monthh to month basic. Last week I want to sign up a year contract with this plan but I couldnt find it anywhere…. I so just stay like this until I got an email like OP

    • I has considered Exetel but I would now be no better off than I am with TPG (prices haven't been jacked up yet; still $70/month for 50 MBit unlimited).

As others have mentioned, greedy government owned monopoly NBN is the villain, not the resellers (ISP). NBN is the new Telstra.

  • +1

In general ISP's are struggling with the new NBN pricing and putting their prices up

  • +1

Now this is the problem with Month to month and why ISPs are now making it so attractive.

  • +1

I almost think the NBN co plan was to make internet slow and expensive just to get us outside more to try and reduce the obesity epidemic or something. It literally has made no sense since they switched from FTTH to this multi techno bullshit.

  • Post is a bit confusing. But you weren't on a contract that gave you x % off for the first y months were you?

Perhaps increase your tenants rent by z amount to cover it if you're paying for their internet? Or maybe next time don't cover their utilities to make sure you aren't stung like this again.

  • +1

You should be able to get out due to significant changes in cost.

NBN is spearhead of rip off Australia. Substandard services for premium prices.

  • -2

Who vote for liberal this should be hang, if my memories is correct, labour said that they will fix this shitty situation and bring Australia back on technology map

    • +1

Who vote for liberal this should be hang

      English?

      • +1

I dunno, it's about average for this forum, where many people are apparently well-off / owners of investment properties / fly in business class / etc, but still spell or use grammar as well as a year 10 high-school dropout.

        • +1

I didn't have to save up for a house, Daddie bought me mine!

    • so you believe what the pollie say they would do? doesn't matter which side…

    • +1

This isn't an NBN issue, OP is connected to an opticomm network.

      • +1

they just follow NBN's pricing though =/

  • will move to 4g if this happens to me when its time to get nbn

    • +1

Guessing you don't use that much data then. For many people this is not a possible alternative.

      • 250GB for $40 may be enough for someone that doesn’t stream.

        • For a single average user (or 2 light users) 250gb can be more than sufficient.

        • which carrier is 250g $40/pm ?

I still stream mostly at 360p .. so I can survive on 30-40g/pm.. video is mainly in the background as I'm too busy doing other things so I don't need 1080p or anything..

        • OP's plan was only for 90GBs. He just wants the cheapest, crappiest plan because it's for his tenants.

  • UPDATE:
Called the ISP, they said we can't offer you the same price as we will lose money we will offer you the same plan for 59$, or 70$ for unlimited data.

Called telecommunications obudsman they said they can't help if the ISP wants to increase the price.

  • +1

    Original email:
We wish to advise that unfortunately, your current plan is no longer available due to speed and price changes from our suppliers. We have therefore had to review our plans on offer.

As of the 1st October 2019, your plan will be upgraded to our Standard Plus Unlimited plan, with faster speed and unlimited data. Your monthly fee will be $69 per month. This does not include the cost of our home phone plans.

If you have an existing home phone plan, there is an additional cost depending on your phone package.

Please contact us if you wish to discuss further and thank you for being a valued customer of Harbour ISP.

    Warm Regards,
    The Harbour ISP

Perfectly reasonable. You were on a great deal while it lasted and now it's over. Nothing that would warrant any outrage. You have the option to stay or move to another RSP. Pretty simple.
