  • 2 in my local went quick, there are 2 sorting in the next store but size medium and I'm 183 tall. Worth getting?

    • Think I'm going to put mine back. I'm too tall for M….
      Edgeworth nsw

      • No L left in edgie?

        • Nope, someone took the last 2 as I was entering. I made the mistake of going Cardiff first who only had 2 bikes total

          • @Click_It: I was in Newcastle first thing but grabbed the wrong size. 😫

            • @jakerowland54: Ah bummer. They needed more L sizes. But anyway…

            • @jakerowland54: Do you have M mate? I’m in Newcastle and need M

              • @AmiDh: Sorry mate didnt end up buying it. Did you get a L?

              • @AmiDh: They had M at hamilton, newcastle and jesmond when I checked this morning. Wallsend was sold out. About 2 in each. L sold out in a couple of minutes at Newcastle then I drove around for an hour and nowhere else had any. Was go a check kotara but gave up.

              • @AmiDh: I got sent to Wolli Creek for 2 x L's and they had about 5 M's this might suit you as it is right next to a main train station. They actually had no large at all. You would probably want some sort of trolley or wheels for the box though, it's enough of a walk to be annoying to try to carry that far. There is a lift for the platforms you would need.

  • Only had 2 bikes at Top Ryde. sold out by 8:33am

  • +1

There were 3L and 3M in Maroubra, got a L.

  • Toombul,QLD - SOLD OUT

    • Got there at 7:45, and scored 1 L for me and 1 M for my daughter :-)

  • +1

For those looking, there is nothing clear and obvious about the sizings on the box. Medium is size 44 and Large is 48

    • User manual says:
      - Medium frame: Rider 170-180cm
      - Large frame: Rider 180-190cm
I'm 175, went for L, happy with that.

      • does the frame feel big to you? or do you think the user manual is incorrect

        • Feels just right. I have to put the saddle at max height already, I think a M would be too small.

  • Ringwood (vic) sold the large fast, I asked and they pulled out 2 more from the store room. I think maybe 1-2 mediums left.

  • VIC
1M and 1L at Werribee Plaza
    0 at Werribee

  • If anyone around Newcastle got L and had a change of heart I'll buy it off you + throw in extra $ for your trouble.

    PM me

  • Whats the value like for the other accessories that they have there? Bag, Lights and bike rack?

    • Don't look the best. Can get better online.

For those wanting to know the box size it’s 149Lx82Hx23W

  • I checked 4 Aldi's before finally grabbing one at North Rocks. They had 2 or 3 left at 11:15 and I saw both L and M.

  • 2 mediums left at Coorparoo QLD

  • Front chainring is 30T :(

    • What does that mean?

    • No good for the TT ? :)

    • 30T to 11T: At cadence 90 speed willn't be more than 35 km/h

  • Anyone ridden this MTB yet and can you review it for a range of riders including newbies and commuter users?

Two left at Thornleigh NSW 2120 if you're still looking this late in the day.

I bought the Camelbak clone and it fit in 1.2Kg of digestive biscuits! :)

  • Any ideas for adding commuter tyres for these? I'm looking at something like this (mentioned previously)
    https://www.wiggle.com.au/schwalbe-g-one-allround-raceguard-…

  • There were 2 of each size at Scoresby VIC. I’m 174 and gambled on a Medium. I hope it’s ok! I should have grabbed one of each :p There were 2 more behind me in the register at 8:35

    • It will be. I got a M and measured it up and it has an effective top tube of 61cm which is the same as my Giant M (I am 175).

  • Thanks all, got to my local Aldi at 7:30. There was already a queue of people but they were all after some kitchen appliance. I went back at 8:30 to do some grocery shopping and there were still three left. Sounds like other stores sold out quicker.

Anyway, bike looks reasonably good for the price. Need to find a magpie-free street to ride it in.

My only gripe so far is that the front brake caliper lightly scrapes the disc:
    Pic
    Anyone else experienced the same?

    • Mine is the same must be bent slightly but its only a light touch.

      • Im having same problem. How did u bend it ? it seems pretty solid

    • My rear brake was the same. Loosen off the mounting bolts at the caliper, squeeze and hold the brake, retighten and check that its centered itself and not rubbing. Should be all good after that.

      • Thanks mate that sorted it out. Would suggest everyone else checks this before riding it as I ended up scratching my disc a bit.

      • Thanks heaps for this suggestion. It worked a treat.

  • Any medium bikes left in Newcastle?

  • two mediums left at Engadine.

  • Managed to get one. Any ideas for a helmet?

Blue Ribbon Ice cream bucket 👌

      • KFC bucket, the greasy leftovers is twice as effective as MIPs.

  • Maribyrnong (Vic) still had 2 or 3 as of midday Saturday, so not too much demand here, may still be around if you're lucky.

  • Anybody got any tips for prepping this bike for a maiden voyage on the trails?
    -loctite bolts?
    -chain lube?
    -slime etc?

    • My personal thoughts on chains are to keep the factory installed lubrication until it's dirty or washed off, then clean and put on new stuff.

But everyone with have a different opinion. Apparently hot wax is making a resurgence, with high efficiency and stays clean and dry, but you need to clean the chain perfectly before applying, then you need to mess around with melting wax…

    • Just make sure everything is tight. My son took his one out the trails in Kalamunda (WA) and had a blast yesterday. Great bike for the money.

  • No bikes left at Portland, Vic. They said they called Hamilton and both Warnambool stores and none of them had any either.

If anyone ends up with an unwanted bike near Mount Gambier I'd be interested

  • My rear brakes rubs as well. Had a go at adjusting the pads, but still rubs once every revolution and I can see it not rotating straight. Only off by half a degree or so. I'm not sure if it's sitting in right, or the disc brakes Rings are bent, or if it's kinda normal. Probably gonna take it to a shop tomorrow to get checked.

Had thr same experience with both front and rear discs. Firstly make sure your wheels are aligned. Losen the nuts and reseat the wheels before tightening. Losen thr caliper nuts, then a shine a light on the brake pads. Adjust the calipers so that the pads are centered and not touching the roter. Then tighten thr calipers. Spin the wheel and listen for any scraping. This fixed thr disc rub issue for me. Tightening and holding thr brakes while tightening the bolts did not help for me.

  • For anyone curios about the size. This bike is on the larger side. My inseam is about 81cm and the medium fits me perfectly.

This is a very well thought out bike for the money! Whoever specced the bike for Aldi definitely know something about mtb; 29er, suspension weighted nicely for 75kg, 1x10 Deore gear, chain guard, internal routing, neat cockpit, stealth black bike for the price of 399 is a steal.

Just installed the bike at home and no further adjustment to hydraulic brake, gear and even saddle angle. As I said it’s really well thought out and adjusted before packing. I have bought different bikes from $50 subway bike to 2k hard tail and 5k carbon dual suspension mtb and carbon rd bike. This is the best bang for the bucks. I would compare this to bike shop bike in the range of $800 - $900 and I would still choose this.

I am 172cm and bought a Medium. Recommended is 170 - 180cm so I think the sizing is correct. Don’t over think this get it if you can.

    • The chain guide is nice, but shouldn't be required at all as the chainring is (or attempts to be) a narrow-wide design.

  • +1

    So my thoughts FWIW.

Overall, great value. A proper derailleur and hydro brakes is what really makes the deal. Like others, my brakes needed to be adjusted out of the box, but I immediately swapped the rotors to 180mm (I had them spare). Stealth black is the best option, no crappy stickers in sight.

    Downsides;
    - I'm a heavy rider (100kg) so I will no doubt be replacing the forks at some point to something a bit more supportive. I'm eyeing these (unless something better suggested?) https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32814282797.html
    - I dislike the crankset on principle. I mean it's better than the stamped and riveted chainrings of old but I'd much rather a single chain ring on a 104BCD 4-bolt crank. This uses a proprietary direct mount (or just pressed on?) 30tooth ring. So to change the chainring size (or replace due to wear) I'll have to replace it all.
    - 27.2mm seatpost. Essentially no dropper post options (at least internal with a worthwhile drop)
    - The internal cable routing exit point near the BB is just a big hole, no grommet to keep the crap out

The downsides are opinion and all a consequence of meeting a price point.

    • +1

Agree good value and the consequence of meeting a price point.

Check the steerer tube before ordering your fork.
I suspect it might be straight rather than cone.
Agree chain guide not required and can be removed for even cleaner look.
I will keep it there for my wife to ride with the kids.

I will resist any temptation to upgrade this bike.
The fact that people are considering upgrading shows the potential of this bike.

Btw the bike 'feels' like 12-13kg.

My personal review (first time mountain biker):

    The Good
-value for money is awesome. I compared this with a $800+ Merida big 9 and from a non MTB background I feel like this bike was just as good if not better in some aspects
-the 1x10 gearset in my option is great. Only having to worry about one gear lever makes things much more simplified and probably stronger. I found the 10 years provided plenty of range on the tracks
    - The overall quality seems to be of a high standard. The frame and components feel premium and gave me confidence hitting some pretty intimidating tracks. Considering it was the only hard tail on the tracks I thought it did really well. Although the overall quality seems good there are a few things to look out for (see the bad).

    The Bad
-My front forks seals started to leak after my first outing which is a shame. Not sure what I'm going to do because I love the bike and there doesn't seem to be any stock left to just swap the bike at Aldi
-The geometry is a bit off. I'm 182cm and have a 180cm wingspan and the large just feels a tiny bit big (definitely bigger than the Merida big 9 large). I tried out someone else's medium and to me it felt pretty good although the seat post needed to be extended quite a bit. The recommendation in the ambmag review about those people taller than 170cm going for a large doesn't seem accurate to me but hey that's just my opinion with no MTB experience.
    - The front handle bar clamp was missing two washers. I haven't checked the reset of the bike for any other missing washers.

I highly recommend this bike to those looking to get into the sport and if you're lucky enough to find some stock.

    • My bar faceplate too only came with two washers, so probably standard. Also the threads were not great so the screws needed some work.

      • That's what I thought but the other one I tested out had four washers. Easy fix though.

      • Same here re: washers and threads.

        • just to be sure, do you also have a couple mm gap in each of the four corners on the plate? i couldn't screw it any tighter.

      • Same here I got 3 washers for 4 faceplate bolts. I thought it fell off when I took the first one out. Where can we find such a washer? I think the thread was not so great is because of the blue loctite it's normal.

    • If you are in Sydney I would consider going and buying a brand new medium and swapping it with you for your large.

      • I think I'll stick with the large.

    • I bought a bike too and noticed the front forks leaking as well. I had a quick look around and I don't think there's any oil inside the fork? They are just greased. Still not great that there's a lot of grease coming out, but not fatal to the operation of the forks.

Edit: thread I found on servicing the forks. https://forum.bikeradar.com/viewtopic.php?t=12659951

  • anyone elses stem not line up straight with the fork/wheel?

also had issues with brakes rubbing. will look to adjust as mentioned here.
and the derailleur wasnt tuned properly. panicked when i saw no cable adjuster at the mech but adjusted at the shifter.

and the chain guide rubbed so have removed for now.

    • My stem is very slightly misaligned, but easily adjusted.

    • Yeah my derailleur wasn't adjusted perfectly, but that's an easy fix. Front disc was rubbing on the caliper - fixed.

One Large left at Morley WA recently.

  • Anyone know the narrowest width 700C Tyre will fit on these rims?

  • Looking for a dropper post… Anyone found a better/cheaper option than this one from Brand-X?

    https://www.chainreactioncycles.com/au/en/brand-x-ascend-ii-…

    • I just bought one of these https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/362605874840 to replace my old faulty Giant Switch on my Trance. Picked it up for $160.65 using an eBay coupon.

Heaps of good reviews. Yet to fit it, but think it should be good. The cartridge isn't serviceable, but apparently the Ascend II cartridge is which is a good thing. Heard good things about both droppers.

    • I've got a brand x and xfusion dropper. The xfusion lever was super fiddly to get setup right it also didn't keep as much tension on the cable so it was harder to setup at the dropper end too. Once setup they behaved equally.

There are dropper posts around the $100 price (see Aliexpress/ebay). Personally, if internal is not an option, I'd opt for one of the ones with the underseat lever (eg https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33055829524.html) to keep it neat.

Snagged a medium (last one) at Warwich WA today.

  • Sigh, Ozbargainers remorse; buying something because it is good value is not always the best reason.

Large available for sale in Ringwood (victoria) if anyone missed out. Send me a message if interested.

    • Just take it back???

      • Will do. Just thought I'd raise the option as returned items do not always become available to others for purchase.

  • Any bikes on the Central coast NSW 2259?
