50% off Castrol Edge Engine Oil 5W-30 10L $69 @ Repco

290

Catalogue item, Ozbargain favourite engine oil. Can’t see any limitation on number of items, tried putting 4 in my cart and wasn’t any issue, unlike SCA which is limited to 2 per customer.

Edit: Thanks mods for updating the price, with this its officially $2.78 cheaper (Thanks @Rakddon) compared to SCA equivalent (2 X 5L)

This is part of Father's Day deals for 2019.

Care to elaborate? I would have thought it would be fine given its multigrade and as long as it is as recommended by the manufacturer

Well it's only really rated up to 35 degrees afaik. I'm only going by what I was told by a mechanic mate but he recommended 40 for Aussie summer. I don't believe Castrol make a 40.

          So if it’s 45 you’re screwed anyway?

@Laziofogna: Maybe google for yourself before negging?

            • +4

@[Deactivated]: Nope. I just followed you reasoning. If 30w is not enough for 40, then 40w is not enough for 45. Also I remind you is not an anti boil, it’s related to viscosity.

              • @Laziofogna: 5w40 is not optimal for 45 deg celcius, but it will still work. Interesting though as manufacturers don't specify a winter and a summer oil viscosity recommendation - just the one.

              • @Laziofogna: Actually I said 30 is 35 so by that reasoning 40 would be 45 or more.

There is a lot more factors than just ambient temperature…

        • Yes because engine oil doesn't get hotter than ambient temp when put through an engine…..
The number in the oil gradings don't refer to ambient temperatures.

        • 40 is more drag for the moving parts. Using a 40 in place of a 30 on a car that states to use 5w30 or 10w30 would probably do more damage I'd say. The most important part is to use a fully synthetic oil that's designed for extremities and longer service life

Stupid question, but when you buy this does it come with the tap?

I see the connection down the bottom, but for $1 extra I'd rather the convenience of 2x 5L containers from SCA.

    • +2

yes. cap is inside lid if I remember correctly.

      • Yeah it is, but how do you use it? are you meant to use a drill into the plastic?

        • Don't drill or you will leave plastic chunks.
I just used a similar castrol bottle and used a screwdriver and hammer to make a hole, only issue is that it makes quite the mess (obviously lay it on its back with the lid on).

          • @pipster11: Yeah I tried lightly with a screwdriver and hammer but the whole thing deformed a little so didn't try any harder. Ended up not using the tap but still curious if there's an easy way to use the tap..

            • @rev29k: There is a plugged hole on the bottom side of the 10L container. Just unscrew the plug and screw the tap in.

              • @Sleepycat3: there is no hole under the plug. you have to make one yourself.

  • $2.78 cheaper than the 2 x 5L.

    • Thanks, you are genius, fixed

  • Thought I'd post this now but I picked up these 10L bottles at SCA for $2.99 when this special was on.
