Always wanted one but dont know what to choose. Just want to have fluffy rice like at my favorite sushi restaurant. I saw their rice cooker brand is Tiger

      • Thats the problem :(

      • +27

Yep. Just like how I don’t use a microwave. If you know what you’re doing, you can just build a fire out of fallen branches, light it with flint, then cook on that.

The convenience of just pressing a button and coming back to find things ready is totally overrated.

        • What you have to use force to press a button? Nah that’s too much

@Hinee: He would have my name if he was doing that.

          • @Hinee: Are you Hinee, formerly from the GameArena forums?

              • @Hinee: I can barely remember what handle I was using back then. I think it was probably Zer0_X or something equally teenage-esque.

It's funny seeing usernames/handles around that you remember from 10+ years ago. Another one I see around the place is WaLLy3K too.

                • @skittlebrau: Yeah good effort. I laughed while commenting on a Kotaku article seeing Soldant with his original username + avatar. I still have quite a few GA crew on FB but we were a pretty social bunch back in the day.

      • jv vs fluffy rice eater cult 😂

Depends how much you want to make. We have the cheapest 5.5 cup one listed above and it's one of the best things we've ever bought given how much rice we cook. If you just want rice you can't go past that one.

        • +2

Koreans eat rice three times per day. The rice cooker is never off. They seem fine.

Rice has been a staple of human development more than almost any other food.

Bread and Pasta on the other hand; less so.

A lot of times it has more to do with the rice you buy rather than the rice cooker…..

You just need to the right type and brand

We just use one of these, much cheaper and makes good fluffy rice.

That Plastic Container You Microwave In Could Be Super-Toxic | TIME Magazine
            https://time.com/4229503/plastic-in-microwave-is-it-safe/

^ you can read reports/articles like these, that say 'microwave safe' plastics are acceptable as glass/ceramic dinnerware,
but if you can use glass/ceramics … then why use microwave-safe then? Just stick to what is closer to the 'earth', i.e. glass/ceramics.

Sure, it all has approval of authorities, but weed-killers also had approvals too, before decades of use later, it's shown to cause cancer…but then, there's a whole system in place, that suppresses the rulings, the results, the verdicts, etc.

I'm just saying, that it's relatively better NOT to microwave food in plastics, if you can use glass or ceramics.

Then again, it's relatively better to cook fresh every meal and NOT to microwave.

So, every choice has a known risk and an unknown risk, and usually it's a compromised solution. Most of the time, we compromise our health.

            • +3

@whyisave: No offence but just about everyone of your articles indicated that containers labelled as "Microwave Safe" are likely to be OK as long as they are in good condition. The real issue is people using takeaway containers, plastic wraps etc.

The problem with glass and ceramics are
              a) they take a lot longer to heat up the foods, than the plastic containers, and can often be hot themselves when you take them out
              b) You need to make sure you get glass and ceramics that don't have any metal elements to them.

I'm certainly on the side of the angels when it comes to the misinformation that Governments and Corporations have put out there on the safety of various elements but I don't think the Microwave plastics is going to be the "Love Canal" of the future. I think you are much more likely to be struck down by the heat and eat packets of preprocessed foods than the microwave safe container.

If you are microwaving rice then you are preparing "fresh", it is no different to preparing it in the saucepan (which may be made of aluminium which has also fallen under a cloud at various times).

Plastics have certainly contributed to stuffing up the world we live in, but the problem is more "one use" crap that a reuseable microwave cooker.

        • So we should just throw away our microwave or only use non plastic containers to heat stuff up?

          • @onetwothreefour: you don't need to throw them away, because you can still use them as containers OUTSIDE the microwave.

in general, containers (bowls, plates, etc.) that 'earthenware', is supposed to be more suitable.

e.g. porcelain plates/bowls, glass containers, ceramic saucers, etc.

        • just use a ceramic bowl

          • @gringo: and what are you using as a lid to stop it "popping" food all over the top of the microwave?

            • +1

@try2bhelpful: I was going to be a bit of a smart arse and say that we use a microwave-specific cover for heating in the microwave until I realised… it's plastic.

              Not feeling so clever now.

            • @try2bhelpful: Um, an upside down plate (ceramic).

    • Just get the cheapest one. The secret is getting the right rice and getting the water to rice ratio right

    • I use the Breville Smart Rice Box to make sushi at least once a week, and results are incredible. And it's currentl under $100

    • I use the Breville Smart Rice Box to make sushi at least once a week, and results are incredible. And it's currently under $100

    • Make sure you use the correct type of rice too, as they're long grain, short grain, jasmine, etc.

Sushi rice usually uses short grain type and then you need to know which brand of rice is best for sushi to get that fluffy texture.

And as someone else has mentioned, need to get the water ratio right..

    Tiger Rice Cookers

Where can I buy Tiger Rice ???

  • are these pressurised?

    • No I don’t think so. I have the 10 cups JKT I didn’t go for the pressure one because it’s a pain to release the pressure everytime before you can open the lid.

      • How long does it take to cook the rice?
My pressurised one gets it done in 15mins.

        • There are a couple of cooking modes, the quick one is around 10-15 mins (depends on how many cups of rice), the longest one takes around 45mins I think but of course the longer cooking mode cook better than the quick mode.

I normally clean the rice and set the timer and when we get home the rice is cooked.

  • Do I cancel my order for the Breville rice cooker from amazon and get the cheapest one of these, or just wait for the Breville? Anyone have any comparison?

    • +10

Tiger is way way better than Breville.

      • Even the cheapest? Is it worth going for the $159 one or spending extra and getting the $223 one?

        • +4

          $223 of course!

The inner pot is a thicker material which makes the rice cooked more even.

The $159 one is a very old model which my parents used to have 30 years ago… and the inner pot is an older material they used to use.

          • +1

@pearl2013: Ok great! Thanks for that, I’ll do that.

          • @pearl2013: Any idea how long the JAX-S10A takes to make 2 or 4 cups? We have a korean cuckoo and it takes like 40 minutes for 2 cups.

            • @xelfer: That's normal time to cook 2 cups if you choose the "Ultra" mode with the JAX-S10A.

Does the cuckoo has a "quick" mode?

          • @pearl2013: The old one is tried and trusted…lol… that's why it's still popular.

            • @hippyhippy: Yes the older pot is very versatile you can cook all sort of things in there.

        • +2

Here's a good break down on the difference between the models: https://www.pressurecookerportal.com/tiger-rice-cooker-model…

    • +1

FWIW, I've had a Breville Rice Box for many years and it's been great. We were cooking rice at least 2-3 times a week at one time, we don't use it quite as often now. Agreed that Tiger is likely going to be a lot better in the long run. YMMV

      • Thanks for that. I suppose the tiger might be more a ‘buy it for life’ sort of thing.

        • Bear in mind that the Breville Smart Rice Box is a model "above" the standard Breville Rice Box.
And the Breville from yesterdays deal holds 10 cups, while the tiger only hods 5.5.

          Just some things to consider.

          I love my Breville :)

      • I don't mind my Rice Box, either, and have used it maybe twice a week for over a year. When I wanted a rice cooker, it was on sale and the Tigers and Panasonics weren't, and my Chinese colleague said she had one and it makes good rice, so I went for it. Better than my older, smaller Zojirushi that was only ever happy with certain types of white rice, and much better than the $15 K-Mart ones.

      • Reviews seem good too. I’d like to get the Tiger but we just don’t eat enough rice to justify the absurd price.

    • +1

I just ordered the ~$90 breville and I'm glad I did, otherwise I might have dropped 3 x the price on a Tiger, which surely can't be 3 x as good.

      • Where did you get it? I think that’s the one for me.

        *edit

        Myer. Got one, cheers.

    • +1

Even though I love Tiger. Just looking at the most recent Choice reviews, the Breville Rice Box topped it.

  • Got JKT-S18A from last year. Best upgrade ever, easy to to clean, perfect rice all the time, fully recommended!

  • Does anyone know if any of these have a stainless steel pot without the non-stick coating?

    I cannot find any.

    • +1
      • How are these compared to Tiger etc for quality of cooked rice?

        • Don’t know seriously. Buffalo is famous for its stainless steel product… not sure about rice cooker.

  • +3

Genuine question, I have a cheap, $15 k-mart rice cooker that has been absolutely amazing and a revelation over the last 2 years in the kitchen after having watched my parents microwave their rice for over 20 years.

How does something like this justify the price? i.e. what at the major advantages between a cheap and an expensive rice cooker?

    • +5

The rice is more fluffy and more evenly cooked. It stays perfect even after being left on “keep warm” for hours.

If you just have rice once per week and dish it all up once it’s cooked, it’s probably not worth it. But some people cook rice every single day, so a good rice cooker gets as much use as their microwave.

    • +1

You will know it once you get one! Just kidding!

I used to have an older model Breville which I was still in school so had no money to buy an expensive one. The problem with Breville is the rice doesn't cook evenly or they burnt the bottom of the rice.

Then I upgraded to a $100 Panasonic rice cooker which cooked the rice much better but the inner pot is a thinner material so the rice is cooked evenly but it is just not as good as the rice I tried in Korean / Japanese restaurant.

Last year I tried my friend's $600 Panasonic rice cooker (which does not sell in Australia, she carried it all the way from Asia) and it is restaurant quality so I purchased the JKT which is a similar grade to the Panasonic.

It's like coffee, many people are happy with starbucks, but I would very much rather make my own.

    • +1

Like comparing instant coffee to barista made coffee.

    • +1

Ha! You probably have the same one I got a few years ago, that I replaced with a better rice cooker when its fuse blew.

A better rice cooker, for starters, doesn't get rice stuck and clumped on the bottom.

    • +1

I had one of those, it used to bubble over and get water and rice starch everywhere, particularly with brown rice. I think the fact that it wasnt sealed meant that it lost a lot of water during the cooking process.

Also, because it wasnt sealed, the rice dried up and became unpalatable very quickly.

I cook my rice in a pressure cooker now, much better.

  • +1

Bought the S10A during the last deal. Extremely happy with it, nothing short of life changing!

  • +1

Do these rice cookers have FUZZY LOGIC?

    • -6

The cooked rice does, if you leave it out of the fridge for a week or two.

    • This new one is smarter than fuzzy logic I think. I first heard this term more than 20 years ago in rice cooker…

    • Most if not all microcomputer controlled rice cookers use fuzzy logic to cook.

  • +4

Wow rice cooker have gotten expensive.
What magic does the $500 one do?

    • Don't eat rice enough to justify it but by all accounts it's the Ferrari of rice cookers
