Uses his powers to save people $1 at Aldi instead of winning the lotto.

      Real MVP.

    @RichardL you were right!!!!

    Edit - Ha too slow!!!

  • Anybody who has one of these, what's the cooking time like on plain long grain white rice?

Anecdotally I've heard that the super basic style rice cookers (e.g. the $14, 7-cup Kmart one) are faster than the fancier ones. Has that been your experience as well?

    • +5

I have this, upgraded from a cheap woolworths rice cooker that was horrible, always spilt over the lid. This is really good, usually 2 cups takes around half hour on normal mode. Fast mode is ~ 15 minutes.

Comes out nice and fluffy if you adhere to the recommended cup/water ratio. Haven't tried brown or other rices, haven't tried the cake option either. For white rice this has been awesome.

      • +1

Same for me.. Love it.. for me it takes ~40 mins.
Haven't used Fast mode though.. Does rice comes out to be same in fast mode?

As someone mentioned, yes, no condensation catcher.. but it's much cheaper than known brands.. I got it for 10 or 20 dollars cheaper on clearance!

what's the cooking time like on plain long grain white rice?

7-8 mins on the stove top…

  • I got the Tefal Induction Rice Master and slow cooker as a product test. It is different like day to night, but it will do if the Aldi device is only within your budget. If you want more, spend more.

  • -1

    WiFi?

  • Normal mode is too long for me. 6 cup Cuckoo sold in Costco cooks much faster.
Bad design too: no condensation catcher at all.

  • Who actually makes this though?

Where can I buy Digital Rice ?

  • I need opinions from the asians who cook rice daily. This good?

    • -1

24 hour keep warm and preset timer

Asians who cook rice daily don't need, 24 hour keep warm and preset timer

    • +2

Not this junk-ware. Asians invest in top-of-line rice cookers - first purchase after leaving nest-egg. Second is water.

      • -1

        "after leaving nest-egg"?

        What does that mean.

        • Typo, … “nest.”

    • Get yourself a Zojirushi or Cukoo

Got myself a induction Zojirushi and never going back

      • +3

Bit of a difference in price there though, isn’t there?

Like comparing a Camry to a BMW?

        • Buy once, cry once.

      • I'm guessing tastes miles better than microwave packet rice and Kambrook rice cooker rice?

Asking for a friend that can't cook for shit but wants to be at the top of his rice game.

        • +1

          Way way better.
Rice breed/brand also makes a difference. We use rice from Hokkaido, Japan.

    • similar. has the same condensation issue.

      • how does this affect the rice?

        • It's more the mess when you open the lid and water pours down the back onto the bench.
I guess if you didn't open the lid fully then it would drip the water back onto the rice and that wouldn't be great.

          • @Tiggrrrrr: The trick is to tilt the whole appliance to it's side before opening, then have a chux in your hand when opening the lid to wipe it.
            Problem solved, winning.

      • +2

Interestingly, I’ve found there is less of a condensation issue when I put a couple of drops of oil in the water before cooking (brown rice).

  • What’s it like cleaning it? Comments from a previous brand put me off because apparently the lid doesn’t seperate from the cooker and is a nightmare to wash it.

    • +2

The lid doesn't separate but there is an aluminium insert in the lid that clips out, and on the top the vent thing pops out and has a little clip to open it up and get the condensation out. I wash the insert, and give the lid a wipe once insert is removed.

(Since the Kmart one is essentially the same you can look at that to see what I mean)

      • Thanks for the response and the links mate. That’s a well thought out design. I’ll consider buying one.

  • I should get one. Not sure if my tiger rice cooker is busted or not but it takes ages to heat up. Takes like an hour to cook rice when my older one would take like half an hour

  • What to buy for $150-200?

    • three of these ones

  • +2

Induction Heating rice cooker gives the best outcome but costs $$$$.

  • Got the KMart one recently & was disappointed. Normal mode takes an hour for 5-6 cups & rice came out gluggy. Then we found fast mode works just fine! 30 mins, good quality rice. No idea why.

    • 5 to 6 cups is a lot. Did you try stirring it around once or twice before the water absorbed too much? This might help it heat up more evenly.

      • 6 cups is apparently enough for 12 people. In my house 2 cups barely feeds 2.

  • If anyone doesn't like the teflon or plastic steam tray that this has, I found https://www.unclebuffalo.com.au/products/acook-boilsteam-6-c… which seems to be the budget option of stainless steel rice cookers. The Buffalo brand seems to be the more premium option. THANKYOU5 for 5% off the order.
Just ensure you follow the instructions about leaving the rice in there for at least 5-10mins after cooking has finished to avoid sticking (and add lots of butter 5 mins before it's finished!)

    • I would rather have molecules of teflon than kilos of butter over a year.
