The i3 mega is a damn good printer, and anycubic's support isn't too shabby.

    • Always good reviews, so thought would be a good starter printer

I have this printer and think it's much better than the Ender 3 for people starting out. I owned the Ender 3 for about 8 months beforehand and got tired of messing around with the V roller wheel set up. The Anycubic linear bearings are so much better plus you can flash it form the get go without messing around with having to load a bootloader like the Ender 3.

    • Do you have more info on the flashing part?

      • Yep comprehensive step by step instructions here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3249319

        Read everything carefully first!

        • Thanks

          • @asa79: was able to flash the new firmware via CURA but couldn't get any of the other apps to connect to get a terminal.

Tried on both mac & PC.

Which apps are you using to get terminal?

            • @impoze: Octopi

              • @asa79: Unfortunately don't have a spare RPI available, had a browse earlier though, will wait for next deal.

                • @impoze: getting much better results after doing mesh levelling and adding the necessary g code to the start.

                  currently printing a Flexi rexy

  • Friends, do I go for the mega-s or i3 mega? And are these pretty much the best ~$300 primters?

  • Also consider the anycubic photon SLA printer for $330. Post print workflow is messy and a PIA but the prints come out awesome.

    • Looks good, might be next purchase ;)

    • Messy is understating things. And there's many extra things you need to buy besides the printer - solvents for cleaning, spare FEP sheets, containers for waste chemicals, filters for reusing resin, gloves, safety glasses (dont get resin in your eyes or on your skin!)

  • I just brought an Ender 3 yesterday. How does this compare as they are similar prices?

This can do abs where ender 3 can't be default. From what I have read from reviews

  • How does this compare with the Ender 3 Pro? Having trouble deciding what to buy. (in terms of print quality and support etc.)

    • I dont think the ender can do ABS by default by might be wrong, only based on reviews

      • I believe the Pro can. just seeing if its worth the extra $50 or so

        • the pro alot of reviews werent happy with the magnetic plate

Seems anycubic has one of the best plates around for the price

    • This has dual Z axis, and the glass coated bed. Both are great additions for minimal extra cost.

Received my Mega-S today, new to 3D printing, put in the 4 screws for the frame, connected the 3 cables, and inserted SD card, selected the defauly owl print and clicked print, and it printed perfectly first go. So did another with cura a flexi dinosaur, and same, just clicked print no setting anything, just plug and play

    • nice, how long did shipping take? I just ordered today.

      • about 3 business days from syd to brisbane, it came in two orders since i ordered the 2KG, 1 was the printer with 1KG in the box and the other was the second 1KG which came by normal mail

  • anyone done the TMC2208 mod?
did you order the steppers from ebay?

    • I have the Mega-s set up and to be honest i dont find it that loud, so would be interesting how quiet it makes after the change

      • from the videos, it makes quite a difference but I guess if I put it in the other room it won't matter

        • +1

I have been watching the videos and it sounds louder in the videos then in person

  • Ordered mine on Tuesday and it just arrived, will set it up soon and report back on my first print :)

    • Which one did you get? I got the Mega-s and looked good first print

  • I set up Octopi and works good for these, can see what is on the SD card and can control the arm and see the status of print jobs. Can run a print job from octopi but i think the run out detection doesnt work

    • just using a rpi3?

and does that give you wifi?

      • yep Pi3, they have wifi builtin

      • +1

Also aldi have logitech c170 webcams for $9 work good with octoprint

        • thanks for the heads up.

just waiting for a rpi4-1gb deal

          • @impoze: Bit of an overkill when it runs off a pi zero

            • @asa79: ah right, cheapest place to get one?

              • @impoze: have a pi zero w on the way and picked up the $9.99 C170 from Aldi just now

                Thanks for the heads up

                • @impoze: had any issues with your Zero W setup?

Octoprint recommend at least a Pi 3B

please note that the Raspberry Pi Zero W is not recommended since severe performance issues were observed, caused by the WiFi interface when bandwidth is utilized (e.g. the webcam is streamed), negatively impacting printing results. See also here.

                  • @impoze: seems to work ok and not too slow..

are you using a separate USB Hub to add the webcam since it only has 1 USB port?

  • did anyone have any issues with their extruder?

doing the filament in but it's not going all the way to the hot end.

I found there was some furry stuff in the tube which I've now taken out but it still won't load all the way in

    • it looked like there was some white filament in there when i did my first print, did you use the filament in via control panel

      • I think it just needed an extra push to clear out the test QC filament. Made it to the hot end now.

  • just like to ask what best practices are when powering down,

are you retracting a bit of filament before letting it cool down with the fans before powering down or it's ok to just turn it off and let it cool down naturally.

    thanks
