Greetings everyone, I just got the camel alert on this set, back down again to an awesome price!

I got this set last time and can safely say it's my favourite ever purchase for a kitchen item, these pans are absolutely incredible and I highly recommend them. Never turning back from cast iron now.

It's also worth noting that the 10.25" pan is down to $21.73 on it's own.

This was about $115 yesterday, so a great price drop. Not as cheap as last time, but still an awesome price.

Good kit for someone starting out cast iron cookware at fraction of the price

  • These are very heavy but

    • +11

woudnt be cast iron if it wasnt

      • Lodge did come out recently with a new line that's lighter.

        • +11

Im not even sure that desirable. The thermal capactity of the cast iron (which is proportional to its mass) is why it cooks how it does - it means adding a colder item to it does not cause the temperature of the pan to drop as much compared to a less dense pan.

    • +11

      …but what?

      • +1

        But these are very heavy

      • +1

he must have meant to say "heavy butt"

      • Genuine question, I use this phrase a lot as well (ending a sentence with but or butt), is it a wog thing?

    • Doubles as a weights set!

  • I just check and these are coming up as $149? Can you point me to the $98 deal?

    • $98 will show up if you're signed in to an account with prime, otherwise you can see it in the Other Sellers page.

      • Good point. My prime membership had lapsed. Have ordered at $98!

  • Thanks
Try to get one but showing

10.25" pan (FREE international delivery on Prime international orders over $49)

good deal for the set but I am beginner with cast iron

    • +2

Yeah the minimum spend to get free shipping on the pan is $49 unfortunately.

Just my experience, I ordered the pan in itself during the no min spend offer (and gifted it to someone else instead), and also ordered this set. I'm definitely a beginner for cast iron and cooking in general and am still gathering an understanding. I personally would recommend getting the set at this price, it's really good value in terms of the type of cooking you can do.

The Dutch Oven is really damn awesome when it comes to making casseroles, stews or any type of baking, I made a shepherds pie in it and I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome. This oven is currently $65 on it's own on Amazon!

Definitely up to you in terms of what you want/need, but I personally really would recommend getting the set over the individual pan at this price considering the min spend requirement.

      • 100% agree! Yes very good value for the set ~

      • I bought the 10.25 inch skillet and since then I've bought a few more grills, dutch ovens, deep skillets.

Cooking with cast iron is the best thing for my style of cooking. I can move from stove to oven, cook meat and sometimes just put them in the camp fire or weber. Its easy to season as well. I just love Lodge products and have 1 Staub, which I really like it too but bought for $330

    • Yeah I think I will just get the pan not the set.

  • +4

If you ant individual cast iron pieces, Aldi also has it on special this week

  • Can they be washed in dish washer?

    • No

    • Do not wash cast iron with soap

      • +6

Myth. You can wash cast iron with soap perfectly fine.

    • +3

Usage of a cast iron pan requires "seasoning" of the surface. Essentially, that is cooking oil that has been heated to high temperature in the pan and polymerised. A well seasoned pan is highly resistant to food sticking. The high temperatures and caustic detergents used in a dishwasher would remove the seasoned coating. Cleaning usually just requires a quick scrub with a soft nylon brush in water and maybe a little dishwashing liquid (assuming the pan has retained its seasoning).

      • I have a question about this. So you blast the pan with oil at extremely high heat which will make the oil oxidise. Oxidised oil from my understanding is horrible for human health.

If you are seasoning your pan by applying oil and heating it, won't portions of that oil leach into the food that you are cooking? I guess this is something that I have hypothetically not been comfortable with regarding cast iron pans.

        • +1

          Polymerise, not oxidise.

          • @Aglet: Sorry, I don't think oxidise was the right word.

"When an oil is heated past its smoke point, it generates toxic fumes and free radicals which are extremely harmful to your body. When the smoke point is reached, you'll begin to see the gaseous vapors from heating, a marker that the oil has started to decompose."

I guess my question relates to the above quote as I have always understood oil taken past its smoke point to be harmful. So if you have effectively decomposed oil coating the pan, wouldn't this leach into everything you cook within the cast iron pan?

            • @fivespice: My understanding is that the seasoning is inert. You season it by superheating the oil without any food on it, building up several thin layers that are similar to plastic (hence polymerisation). So the smoke and associated substances have burned off during the seasoning process, and after that you just cook at normal cooking temperatures. When you cook with oil, it supplements the seasoning a bit.

By all means do some more research, but that's what I've picked up over time looking into them.

    • +2

No to dishwasher but detergent and hot water with a nylon brush are fine.

Do not wash cast iron with soap

      Never wash with water…

Properly seasoned cast iron isn't affected by soap and water, as Aglet mentioned it's a polymerised coating. Stuck food can generally be lifted by boiling water in the pan over heat for a few minutes. Every now and then when I stuff up and get food really stuck (generally from not letting the pan heat up enough) I'll clean with steel wool and detergent. Pan just gets a new seasoning and ready to go again next time.

Acidic food (eg: tomato based stew/sauce) will eat your seasoning but it's easy enough to reseason. Enamelled cast iron are fine for these.

    • It's not ideal but you can get away with it every now and then. Best to take it out and dry and oil as soon as the cycle is done.

  • Great quality pans. Got one in the last sale and after a quick season im onto about the 6th cook and food does not seem to stick to the pan (unless its crumbed which I dont cook in it now).

    • +1

Even crumbed food shouldn't stick, what I didn't do before I finally figured it out:
Add food to pan only when it's hot enough, it needs a while to get to cooking temperature.
Never wash with water, clean with oil, coarse salt and kitchen paper while the pan is still/already hot.

      • +2

Right, Will try this next time thanks.

Random question, I have read somewhere that cooking with Cast Iron is good for iron deficient people due to iron leeching into food or something? Know anything on this?

    • Do you fiddle with the crumbed food while it's cooking? Theoretically, if the pan is seasoned enough, the crumb will release from the pan once it's ready and cooked enough. Fish skin will act similarly.

  • Thanks OP, was waiting for the price to drop again, don't forget cashback!

  • +3

Chef of 30 odd years chiming in,
I bought one of the pans in the last sale for home and it's awesome.
Make sure you get it hot before adding anything to it and you won't find better at this price

    • Unless you want to render fat (bacon, skin-on fish) in which case definitely add when pan is cold.

  • You can't cook acidic stuff in it, right?

    • You can but it will likely damage the seasoning depending on how long it's in contact. Frying halved tomatoes would likely be fine but a tomato based stew would probably remove some of your seasoning.

That said, reseasoning is fairly straight forward.

    • The seasoning comes off and you get little black bits in your sauce if cooking acidic food .

  • I would have been all over this but the only thing in this set I don’t have yet due to the earlier individual deals with free shipping is the Dutch oven.

Great pans - don’t think, just buy. You won’t regret it.

  • +11

I want you all to know that I believe this deal is a direct consequence of my $126 4 pan Lodge order shipping yesterday.
    You're all welcome.

I also ordered this https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B000N4M0Z6/ stainless steal pan for $66.53, so I'm guessing this will be 1/2 price as soon as it ships.

    • Nice ….. Deciding if I go fissler pro or demeyere Atlantis for my stainless refresh.

    • Bought it at that too

  • Thanks. Been wanting to get some cast iron cookware for ages and bought this one.

  • AHHH CRAP. Just spent $100 on a combo cooker from Kitchen Warehouse and used it on the weekend. This would have been perfect.

  • +1

Potentially stupid question - can you use these on an induction cooktop?

    • +3

      Yes, you can

    • They're heavy as hell though so you'd have to be careful not to drag it across the cooktop and scratch it

  • Do we season the cast iron straight away before using it the for first time?

Or has Lodge already pre-season it and we only season it after using it for a while?

Don't really want the hassle of seasoning it first time..

    • +2

      They come pre-seasoned :)

  • I wish you could these these unseasoned, I have some food allergies and a major phobia of the unknown. I would feel a lot better if I could do it myself.

    • +2

Technically you could just blast it on high for an half an hour with something acidic in it to strip off the seasoning. Or just use oven cleaner, that stuff can clean anything.

  • Does the cover fit on the skillets?

    • The seller said in the comments section of the item page "Lid fits both 26cm/10.25" Skillet and 4.7Ltr. Dutch Oven" so I would assume just the 10.25"

  • Items: $98.33
    Delivery: $131.31
    Order Total: $229.64
What am i doing wrong here guys? Do I have to have amazon prime for this?

    • Yes, you need prime

      • +1

DUHHH.. I missed the word on the title. Thanks!

  • +2

got no place for them but bought nonetheless! ozb spirit
