1910

Just saw this on the Valve FB page!
(Link is to the press release)

June 23, 2011—Valve, creators of bestselling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), announced today that after four years and over 200 updates, its popular and critically-acclaimed online action game Team Fortress 2 (TF2) is now Free To Play (F2P).
The F2P announcement comes as part of the "Über Update". Released today, it is the largest content pack delivered to TF2 since it shipped in 2007.

New players interested in experiencing what PC Gamer calls "the most fun you can have online" will have access to training and offline practice modes, so they can hone their skills before jumping into the ever-expanding TF2 universe.
To celebrate the launch of the Über Update, Valve has released "Meet the Medic," the latest in its series of TF2 animated shorts.

TF2 is now Free to Play for PC & Mac players via Steam.

    OMG I just wasted $20!

    • +6

Can't believe you spend $20 on this game. Last year only $2.50

      • He probably got it as part of the Orange Bundle, together with Portal 1 and Half Life 2.

    • +4

This game is awesome, so don't be too upset. Worth more than $20 easily.

    • +2

Don't worry, at least you didn't spend the $20 on hats :P

    • +2

At least you didn't blow $350 on the Hat of undeniable wealth and respect in game.

      • Guilty as charged =(

        • Someone picked up my unusual hat for $240 USD.. TF2 got to be the best hat simulator in the world.

  • Good news for those who wanted to play TF2 but can't pay… but sucks for ppl, like me, who had paid for the account, and recently just bought another one for my sister…
This gonna upset those 'new buyers' in the last few months!
But I doubt Valve gonna give any crap about it! They earn enough money by selling hats already~

Counterstrike is still an old game and total ripoff
virtual items are a scam and people accessing special items
    makes the game unbalanced
steam has strong pros and cons
they are so damn rich they dont need to make half life 3

    • You know how much the Call of Duty franchise made before Call of Duty 4 right? And how many games have followed?

  • have access to training and offline practice modes

Does that mean you don't get free multiplayer?

  • Nice! I can now play TF2 and AVA for free along with Combat Arms, if my "new" X300 128MB can handle them. Great news for FPS players like me.

EDIT: Just realised AVA is 5GB and TF2 is 10GB. I might give TF2 a miss for now, or download it when I feel like it.

What's with the negative? It's Australia, people, Internet download allowance is not unlimited (yet).

      • it is for me :)

Hulu, Espn and this, oh my, I need more internetz soon :D

      • Living under a rock?

TPG Broadband OffNet. And it's not the first.

8Mbit TRUE unlimited, at any ADSL-enabled exchange (ie: doesn't have to be TPG)… $70/mth!!

I get rock-solid 750KB/s. 50GB/day is nothing to sneeze at.

  • nice!

this is crazy, I guess it will be the best free to play game ever.

  • +2

Fun game , loads fast , frequently patched , runs on almost anything and you can always find a low ping server . Their economic model of selling virtual items is a load of crap though . Still for nothing it's all good . I arc it up a couple of times a month and kill a few people , takes the edge off .

  • I've had it in my Steam library for ages, never had to time to download and play

Part of the fear is just the thought of logging in and getting curbstomped around the place by people who have been into it since launch since I don't know anything about it, other than the Aussie character fights with urine.

    • Choose Pyro, and run around madly with your flamethrower on.
Chances are you will get more kills than half the team. (More deaths though too :P)

    • Don't let that put you off from playing this great game!
If it helps in anyway, think about the other new players who started after you. :)

The learning curve isn't very steep especially since it's so fast paced.
If it was something like BF then it would be harder to get into.

  • Bummer! I bought it when it was $50 during the beta with Orange Box. AFAIK, between f2p and p2p in TFT, the only difference is the lack of cosmetic items such as hats. The hats economy goes for $300 USD per "rare" hat as well.

  • Here's an ad for Team Fortress 2 (30 secs)

This game was already playable by anyone anyway,

since… you know… it doesn't involve any skill.

But at least its free-to-play status now represents the type of game it is, playable by everyone.

A team of skilled players with or without good communication will beat a team of bad players with or without good communication.
A mediocre team with good communication will likely beat a team of good players with bad communication.

There is skill involved in the game, especially team and communication skills.

mostly a comment in reaction to how TF2 compares to TFC, and the xboxification of it.

    • +1

so what's up with the neg? Did someone knifed you from the back like 20 times in a row?

  • +3

I think this is a good move. While Valve are continuing to support the game with updates, it's a 4 year old game. Making it free just added value to using steam so it's a smart business move. It's a great game that I've played casually on and off over 4 years. It was basically free with the Orange Box anyways :). I mean I paid $50 for Orange Box when it came out (imported), and it's still one of the best value purchases to this day!

  • YES!!!!!! FINALLY A DECENT FREE MAC FPS!!!!!!! yes i know i could use parallel desktop to use windows but it's not that good!!

  • +3

nice, more fodder for my rockets

  • +1

best game ever, would have happily payed $100 for it given the amount of gameplay I've got out of it :D

  • HOLIDAY time!

  • LOL my friends only bought this a few days ago

    • A friend of mine only got it a few days before this as well, but the f2p isn't completely without catches, people who bought it before became "premium" users. Fortunately the difference between "premium" and f2p users is pretty much a cosmetic and convenience one. (like less item storage)

  • Great game, been playing on and off now since release, now my friends will finally download it and i can blow the begezzers out them too :)

    • +3

This is Team Fortress 2 you noob, not Team Fortress 1 Sherlock.

Gabbylicious in 8 minutes you have made 5 ridiculous comments that you have been negged hard in each one. That is the only 5 comments you have made. You are obvioulsy a fool. Don't lash out at us because you were dropped as a baby. Either be constructive, or find a friend (both of which you may struggle with).

      By the way. Good post.

    • OZbargain so darn popular now, 24/06/2011 marks the history of this site, for the first true troll to appear.

Broden wasn't really a troll, Broden was Broden.

Also, Team Fortress first came out in 1996, not 1984, sadly trolls don't really have brains.

      • that's why they are called … trolls.

      • They live under bridges and not aware of time elapses!

  • +4

This is the best war themed hat simulator currently available.

  • Excellent. I've been waiting a long time to play this game and now that it is free I have no excuses.

  • I was about to download it then WOWZERS! 10GB!!

    • Here take it > gives monkey 10GB of my surplus download quota

    • +1

A decent chunk of it is the source engine and source engine 2007 files, but yes the game is massive.

  • Pity nobody talks on this game.

    • I have found heaps of chatterboxes…

  • Which servers you guys are playing?

  • So when is MW2 and anything pumped by Activision going to be free?

  • Seems very interesting.

    • 300 (if you add up my total time based on classes) or 400 (if you believe steam) hours of game time in, I can tell you that I find it a lot of fun :)
