Credit Card with Low Annual Fee + Good Rewards Program?

Any good ones out there? Thinking about changing from my Commbank one which is absolutely useless!

  • Probably your best bet atm is the the Westpac Altitude Platinum. 60k sign on bonus, annual fee waived for the first year ($50 if you want Qantas/Velocity) and $150 a year (plus the aforementioned $50) after the first year should you continue. Maybe consider getting a $0 annual fee Amex (Qantas Discovery/Velocity Escape) as well.

Edit: Actually I forgot the Westpac Amex which is $49 a year, get 1 point per dollar and will bet you another 15k points sign on bonus.

  • which rewards program?

If Qantas, Have a look here.

As a general rule of thumb, you should have the following cards:
1 American Express Card - for highest points earn + AMEX statement credit offers
2 Mastercard/Visa - as a backup where AMEX is either not accepted, or only accepted with a ridiculous surcharge
3 Travelling Card/International Transactions Card - to avoid having to pay Overseas Transaction and forex fees

I personally have all of them.

    • I have a fourth card that gets me unlimited Lounge access

      • Please do share what it is kind sir

Started with AMEX platinum charge when it came with 120k points that offset the effective AF of $500 ($1200 AF - $700 Travel credit) after travel credit. This came with AMEX global lounge collection and Priority pass unlimited membership. However, AF went up and no bonus points in subsequent years to offset the effective AF made me cancel the card.

I then used Bankwest More World Mastercard which gave unlimited lounge access for you and a random guest through LoungeKey programme ($270 AF).
However, as of a few months ago, they limited it to 10 visits per calendar year.

Now I have Diners club Charge card directly through Diners international ($135 AF without rewards). This provides unlimited lounge access for cardholders only through the diners lounge network (No lounges in AUS). Guests are charged around ~$40, depending on the lounge. Additional cardholders get free access too ($50 AF per holder).

In terms of lounges that you can access, AMEX has the best coverage, however, they recently stopped support for non-lounge experiences such as Airport dining credit (was popular in AUS).
Diners collection does not support this either, but it has similar coverage as PriorityPass, which is more than LoungeKey.

LoungeKey and non-AMEX PriorityPass still supports Airport Dining in AUS.

  • Thanks guys!

This might tick the boxes, the Latitude Affinity credit card:

    • I like this card, $1 spend = 1 point. 10,000 points = $100 giftcard.

Anyone have this card? Any cons with this card??

      • Main con is you can't transfer points to airline points.

So you're limited to endless kitchenware, gift cards, or whatever else is on offer.

But the earn rate is decent - this lives in my wallet.

Also, I've never seen them offer a promotion for signing up (bonus points) and ongoing there are not many promos to boost your points.

I ended up applying and getting the card. If that's the only con then I made the right decision.

          • @BellaWii: Nice. I've had the Infinity card since it was released and use it if I am not trying to bump points on other cards I have :)

You have to roughly spend Over $14,000 yearly on it to make it better than Coles no annual fee one.

        • Annual fee is $69 so have to spend $7K to cover it. Not sure how you got the $14k spend.

@BellaWii: I mean better than something, not just cover annual fee.

        • What do you mean? Coles no annual fee is 1 flybuys point per $2 on eligible spend

Infinity is 1 point per $1, and can be used on a variety of things

I have both cards and Infinity is better value for gaining points.

          • +1

@blueyez: Due to annual fee, points balance on Infinity card starts from -6900 every year. After you spend $6,900, you just make it zero.

Meanwhile, Coles one already yield +3450 flybuys points.

Another $2300 spent on both cards, Infinity increases to +2300 points while flybuys to +4600 points.

Infinity +2300 points = flybuys +4600 points in value. So that's $9,200 yearly spend to make it even. I correct my figure above now.

If you factor out $69 annual fee, Infinity is better of course. Infinity is better than Coles Black Rewards card due to less annual fee, with both being 1% cashback.
