  • Can share/pool data with family member?

    • yes, include data to share 80-gb in the Critical information Summary

    • +1

Can, if all accounts postpaid and on the same bill.
      If prepaid… cannot

      • Can, if all accounts postpaid and on the same bill.
        If prepaid… cannot

Prepaids can. Even if none are on postpaid

hi there is there a link to this deal cheers

  • +2

Could I use this as home internet via some sort of modem/router?

    • yes ….easiest is usb wireless modem and just leave plugged into a usb charger if you have small home physical footprint.

it’s faster and better coverage than some data only sims which don’t give you access to all the bands eg no access to band 28.

      • Is this better than compared to using your phone as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot? Also what USB wireless do you recommend? I see that the Huawei wireless usb modems are a popular choice on eBay.

        • +3

Prob shouldn't have any issues with wifi hotspotting your phone, just a matter of coverage.

My own setup is a Huawei B525 plugged into a good home router (tplink ac5400),

My old outdated Wifi Card in my computer at this point is a bottleneck, the Huawei B525 itself may be another bottleneck being Cat 6 LTE whereas a Note 9 is considered a Cat 18 LTE.

Note 9 as a USB modem data share gets me 25-26 MB/s (200-208 mbits) downloading crap on steam, at home, close to midnight vs the 10 MB/s via my wifi card to the router > Huawei B525 - Forgot what I usually get on speedtests at home, right now however its ~30-40 megabits in Box Hill which would be fairly saturated with people/etc.

The 4G modem in phones are by far quicker than anything available in terms of 4G modems (except something like the HTC 5G hub/modem)

I think if I could redo my setup ; purchase an ASUS router as these have native usb tethering or a router with dd-wrt/open-wrt that supports usb tethering and leave an older phone tethered to it.

Interesting, been wanting to disconnect my adsl and use wireless instead.

Out of curiosity, why would one sign up for data only sim plan if the data+voice sim plan works out cheaper (data-wise)?

        • If you look at their mobile broadband, you can get 500gb per month for around $85 per month (or $65 for 200gb) with the Optus ac800s modem included, so it is better value if you go for the data only mobile broadband (only if you get the modem, it's expensive without it). I recommend the ac800s modem, I get 240mbps off peak and 120mbps during peak and I've got it docked into an aircraft smart cradle for the 4 gigabit Ethernet ports. The ac800s has a better modem than the Huawei on the same plan (450mbps top speed vs 150mbps). I don't plan on going NBN. Keep in mind that these new mobile broadband plans don't data pool anymore

Connection is quite stable too, no dropouts with hours of non stop gaming on destiny 2 and division 2, and with three of us on the same connection we've managed to get over 40 kills between us in fortnite 20v20 matches.

          • @DangerNoodle:

with the Optus ac800s modem included

Is that something I just missed? I thought it was the B525 they were offering. I'd much rather have the ac800s.

            • +1

@NeBlackCat: Go to the Optus website and click on mobile broadband. If you tap the 'at home' button, only the b525 pops up. If you tap the 'on the go' button, you get the same data deals but with an ac800s instead.

  • That 4gb of roaming data. Is that per day, or per trip or per the life of the plan?

    • +3

      per month.

      • Ah, that makes sense. So if I go on a one week holiday, I can use 2gb, and then I go away for three days in the same month, I can use 1gb, or whatever. Nod

        • +8

If you go on holidays across the last few days of the month and first few of the next month you could have 8gig.

          • +1

@Flattop: Just confirming month relates to bill cycle month and not calendar month. Don't get caught out! Roaming costs are quite huge

    • +2

      Per month

      • Thank you! Given I'm only overseas about 10 days a year, this will be useful! And my early termination fee from Telstra is only 85 or so right now.

        • +3

Convert Telstra postpaid to prepaid before you port to avoid the porting out fee too.

          • @kipps: Is this a recent thing, the porting fee?

    • Per month

  • Really want to switch to this but I'm on the $55 plan (discounted to $41.25 per month), from january this year. Can't get a straight answer out of anyone from Optus as to whether they'll try to slug me with early termination fees as even though I'd be paying more per month than I currently do, the plan is technically a downgrade ($50 plan down from $55).

    • +2

if you're ultimately paying more, I'm sure they'd accommodate it

    • +1

Optus don't consider it an upgrade for a sim onl y plan unless you move to a handset plan. You can find the current plan cancellation cost you will be charged on the optus app. If you do have success changing plan and getting the fee waived let us know.

    • +2

I'm on a lower level sim only plan with Optus ($40 for 80G) with plenty of time left on the contract. I asked about upgrading to a plan similar to this during end of financial year sales and I was told I'd get an early termination fee. Though they will happily start a new 24 month contract with hardware.

    • In the same boat - same plan also started in Jan, and they told me $160 termination fee.
This is very good offer, but unfortunately - pass…

    • +1

I agree , their chat reps know nothing more than customers and in most cases less than many customers. Pretty useless and I have provided this feedback too. Don’t bother chatting, they just read from website

  • +8

Am I the only one who can't see the offer?

  • +2

Is there a link to the offer? I can't see it on the optus site

    • Can't see it either. Only the $50 for 80g offer

  • Can’t find anything online regards to this deal any help appreciated

  • +1

Online chat were not able to find the deal for me.

  • +2

    Does this offer even exist?

    • -7

above OP has quoted the CIS with the $50/80GB offer…idk how that translated to $45/100gb lol

      • Because it's considered as bonus data and discount on the plan? No telco is going to make a new cis everytime they do a 'limited offer' deal

  • Can anyone actually see the offer or sign up? Would be a killer deal if it is actually an obtainable plan!

    • +2

Can't see the deal either, but I can actually tell you that I'm on this plan right now. I signed the contract by the end of June promotion event and it's exactly the same deal as this thread. I guess it might be a backend system error so the expired deal page accidentally popping up again when OP found it. And obviously they removed it very soon.

      • That's true. I did sign up to the $40 / 80GB / 4GB Roaming deal and would love to sign this up to another in the family so we can pool the data. Both the $40 / 80GB and $45 / 100GB are killer deals on its own.

  • -4

Can’t find deal and neither can Optus chat

  • +2

Weird, it was there at 1am… Now gone

  • Darn, it's not on the site. Was hoping to switch

    • Don't worry, this deal comes back regularly.

  • You can get $50/100GB if you check via being a Virgin customer, but I'm not sure where the OP has gotten the extra 10% off though.

    • Could be student discount by using .edu email address with targeted offer.

  • must've been a glitch in the matrix. The deal is gone lol

  • Definitely a glitch on the website, the deal displayed EOFY offer and expiring 30/06/19. Then the website said we are busy now, and now it’s been removed.

  • Yes, definitely a glitch. They dont do 12 hour flash deals. I figured if it were legit, it would stay until the morning which it did not !!

  • -1

    Average deal tbh

    Wait for 80GB $40 again

  • $50 still is not bad for 100gb

  • +1

site was up mid night but promotional date was June or something, probably a glitch

anyway ebay is offering 150 giftcard for the $50 80G plan, check that out if you are in a rush
    https://offer.optus.com.au/ebay

    • Wow, did not even know they offered it (or something like this) on eBay!

    • Thanks. This one actually cheaper than the previous 20% off deal. It brings the $50/Month plan to $37.5!.

  • How exactly does the data sharing between eligible plans work? My wife and I are both with Optus, both have been on sim only plans for 12+ months so can easily Upgrade, I pay $30 for 15gb and she pays $30 for 3gb lol. Can I essentially get the $50 plan with two sims/numbers and share the data?

    • put both plans on the same account and you just get it is my understanding.

    • $50 only gets you one plan though. You'd still need to keep the second number on some kind of plan.
I asked the chat earlier if they could do anything for me where I wanted something similar, wanting basically this plan, but a second SIM somehow (free or low cost) to use the data as well but the cheapest they offered was $25 for 5GB.

    • How do I get 15gb for $30?

      • Old plan, signed up in Dec '17 on a promo

  • I am planning to switch my network from Vodafone to something much cheaper option, currently i am paying $40 for 50GB data. 1000 mins International Talk for Zone 1 and 150 for zone 2.
Just want to know that what other options I can go with without sacrificing data and reducing monthly bill?
PS: I can wait for offers too, like new year offer or Christmas.

    Thanks.

    • I think you are already on a good plan. Let's see what others say about it.

  • Damn it I don't check Ozbargain for 24 hours and then all of sudden I miss out on this… sigh

  • +4

Not only has this offer disappeared. They have jacked up all the SIM only plans and reduced the roaming data to 2gb.

    Poor form by optus

    • Well this took a sudden turn for the worse.. disappointing!

  • I want this

  • +1

Was lucky to get the mrs and myself on the last offer $40 80gig and unlimited calls international with 4 gig data…. happened 3 weeks before she went OS.
Made calls of 30-40mins almost daily to and from Europe, she ran her business from OS over the phone
    $0 extra cost. Fantastic plan.

  • +1

I just talked to optus. The 150 eBay card is only for new numbers. I'm already with them so unless I wanted a second service, no go.
However, here's what interesting: the 50$ for 80g plus unlimited text call pls four G of roaming in zone one plus 12 months of Apple music is still a goer. It's the 4g per month of roaming that interests me. I'm headed to Japan for almost a month and they wanted 10$ a day for 100M on their old plans with an add on pack or only 2G a month on the new plan

So post paid it's min cost 600 for the year which is reasonable considering I was paying 360 for 15g a month.

    • However, here's what interesting: the 50$ for 80g plus unlimited text call pls four G of roaming in zone one plus 12 months of Apple music is still a goer.

So you managed to switch over to the $50/80GB with 4GB roaming data, just without the eBay gift card?
I'm out of contract next week so wondering if it would work if I switch to Optus prepaid, then do the upgrade from prepaid to postpaid to get the $150 gift card.

      • Yes to the first.
Not sure to the second. I'd reached the end of my post paid and was switching, and the rep said because it wasn't a new service/number I couldn't get the voucher.
