  • Wow.

  • How much will they be in-store?

    • Hi fooobar,

They will be the same price in-store - $1798. This is the lowest price we've got approval to do, so it will definately be the same everywhere.

      Thanks!

saying that they are 800 off rrp is asking for trouble… what is your normal selling price before this sale?

    • JB's website has them for $2,500 but they aren't available and the cnet review has them at $2,800 RRP so i'd say it's quite accurate

    • +12

Hi wisc – We haven’t sold this panel for the last two months so we were only able to list the current RRP. We didn’t want to mislead our OzBargain shoppers so we also looked at the average street price now and this is still in line with the $800 saving. Hope this has answered your question :)

      • +8

Quite a few sites mention the RRP as being $2,799.00 - so your price actually represents a saving of about $1,000 off RRP. It is great to see a rep being honest and disclosing that they haven't sold the item for two months and also great that you are actually erring on the side of UNDER quoting the savings so as not to mislead people. Compared to JB the saving is still about $700 and even compared to my local retailer selling at $2,295 it still repsents a saving of about $500.

I'm keen to hear people's thoughts on this TV
Is there any motion blur being a 55" and only 100Hz?

  • I was about to buy a 55ex500.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the only difference between the 55ex500 and 55ex710 is CCFL vs side LED backlighting correct?

    • +2

Hi Chris, The backlighting is the biggest difference, yes. The EX500 series is not DLNA certified and does not have any internet features at all. Also, the EX710 has a presence sensor which is kind of handy.

  • I wonder how this compares with the run out Samsung model UA55C8000?

    • +1

with the run out Samsung model UA55C8000

      Link?

    • Sorry it was a smartphone blip (- vote)

    • Hi supercheap1 - The UA55C8000 is no longer available to us unfortunately. It does indeed have extra features like 3D and 200Hz (probably the biggest advantages) but it also has an RRP of $4899 and a street price of about $3500. Hope that helps!

  • +3

I'm yet to see any 100Hz that doesn't suffer motion issues. This is a good price, no dispute there… in reality though, a similarly priced Panasonic plasma will produce a much more satisfying picture with superior contrast and no motion problems. Especially for those who watch sport on a regular basis. If animated movies on Bluray are your choice of material, go the LCD.

    • +4

Having bought a plasma 6 months ago, I wouldn't recommend them due to image retention issues.

      • +6

And the price of power keeps going up.

        • +3

they are becoming more efficient than the plasmas of 5 years ago

But I'm gonna wait for the OLED TV to turn up, the PSV has a 5" one, 2-3 years might come up to 40" which is the ideal size for my room

        • More and more people are buying this media propaganda about power bills etc… It's rubbish my friend. If it wasn't shoved down your throat via the media you wouldn't blink and eye to the extra $10-$15 a year. The price of power is never going to down, not while our salaries are going up(w/CPI etc). And yeah… a little sad if power consumption is the decider between current LCD and Plasma technology for anyone. Again, an LCD selling point that is almost a fallacy these days.

        • +1

Ok well I guess the plasma can at least help heat your room at the same time this time of year. But you will pay for that in summer.

        • +4

Marto - you probably don't use much power. :)

      • Wow - I thought that wasn't a problem anymore. Was it an older model?

        • No a Samsung 50C7000, just recently superseded.

Most movies are fine, but TV is the problem. Those f'n channel "bugs" or logos in the corner burn into the screen. PayTV is the worst with some channels using full non-transparent bright white bugs.

After a hour long show, I'd have "Cartoon Network" burned into the screen for a good 10 minutes or so.

I've got "burn in protection" turned on in the menus, but it's still an issue.

Given the choice again, I would get an LCD.

        • Samsung?? meh… I've owned 3 Vieras going back 7 years, never have I seen image retention. I wouldn't even know what it looks like. Panasonic is worth whatever extra $$ their charging over the Samsung panels. Their quality and service(especially) is considerably better than Samsung. Not to say Samsung make a bad panel, I just think the cost difference is worth the upgrade.

        • +2

in that case Panasonic plasmas are made by Pioneer, if you really want a perfect plasma, get the Kuro
which is fantastic to say the least.
Of course Pioneer don't make Tvs anymore, so you would have to buy second hand

        • I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but my LCD retains images. I thought LCD's couldn't do that.

Hooked up to the htpc, I can see (on the plain black desktop background) where the white explorer windows were.

And whilst it takes a while to occur, it also takes hours to go away. Even when powered off.

In context, it's a reasonably new* too. Series 5 or 6 Samsung.

*so far as that when I bought it, burn-in was allegedly a thing of the past in plasma's. And from what I'd always heard LCDs were never supposed to suffer from burn in. So I'm defining that as new.

        • +1

LCDs can suffer from image persistence/retention, but plasmas are susceptible to burn-in. The difference is that retention is temporary and burn-in is permanent.

You should be able to speed up recovery on an LCD by displaying full white.

I work at a one of the power companies. Capital works program atm is a big target which we have to reach by 2014. If we don't achieve that, expect frequent power cuts, load shedding and other methods be implemented before 2020.

You have to spend money to improve that and obviously, it gets passed on to the customer.

We faced minimal power bill rises from 1990-2005 due to the govt. being insufficient and we are catching up with those price rises now.

        • +1

I'm doing it so tough… gosh money is tight.

TIME TO BUY A 55" BIG SCREEN TV!!!

          :)

Great bargain by the way, if only my current TV would die!

    • Power bill comments are load of crap, however i personally like the sharper more vibrant PQ of the LCD/LED compared to what IMO is dull PQ on plasmas. People who prefer the originality of the PQ without it being enhanced, then plasma is definitely the way to go. Overall, no set is perfect. Both plasma and LCD/LED have their positives and negatives and it is up to each individual to weigh those up before making a purchase.

      • +5

        thats why i prefer CRT…

        • -1

          55" CRT?

When CRTs where still available mainstream, the biggest I could ever remember was around the 32 - 40 inch mark. Was a 1080P or better CRT ever created bigger than 40 inches?

  • excellent.. would buy in a heartbeat if i didnt have a 55 inch already

  • This is just to help buyers: If you want the TV for the looks, get this one as its thin and sleek and has internet connectivity. But if you want a TV with a better PQ, get something else like the EX500.

    • Is the PQ better on the EX500 because of higher refresh rate?

  • Just awesome. If I didnt have the 55EX500, I'll be all over this. If you are in the market for a 55" LCD, this is a no brainer.

    I upgraded by KVHR36M31 to KDL55EX500 and I could'nt be happier.

  • Has anyone here dealt with Videopro before? How are they in terms of after sales service specially warranty?

    • I find their after sales support to be better then most companies.

I regularly deal with their business centre but the few times I've called them as a regular customer they seem to have the same helpful happy staff :)

    • I bought a sony camera for my dad and we returned it after two days because it wasn't the 'right' one for him. Videopro were great in accepting the return without any restocking fee. So yeah, great company to deal with. I initially decided to go with them because of the great feedback from ozbargain in the first place.

  • My dad's looking for a 3D LED TV - any of those on sale?

  • Anything 40% off from rrp is a good deal.i want one but not really need one.will wait 2 more months.it will cheaper by then.

    • +1

…if you can find any stock!

    • Agreed - I doubt you will find this televison for 40% off RRP (ie: even cheaper than Videopro) anywhere that actually has stock - Videopro has the last stocks in the country…

  • Good price but c'mon guys! Plasma surely would be a better value for money choice. Read quote from Cnet review of this TV:

"While prices have crashed in the past 12 months, we're still not convinced that large LCDs are able to deliver the best picture for the money. Sony is currently at the top of the pack when it comes to delivering impressive visuals to LCD, but just a smidge off the pace at sizes over 50.

Nevertheless, the Sony 55EX710 is an elegant television which will no doubt grace many a living space. It's a true all-rounder, but obviously not at the pinnacle of performance for the size."

Not much else to say, really?

    • -2

Give up mate, people get their hearts set on an LCD/LED and that's that. It's like those who buy Volvo or other similar Euro cars… they full know that without doubt there's better performance for the $$ available, but will be influenced by other mediums in making their final decision. You won't find a convincing argument to suggest that panels over 50in are favourable to LCD/LED technology unless the use is very specific. Plasmas are truly one of the great electrical 'bang for your buck' products available atm!!

      • +1

I just bought a 58" Panasonic plasma last month for the office. The image quality was poor - I could see 'dancing dots' on solid colors, and the entire screen flickers. LCD definitely wins for me - hands down.

        • +2

I love the plasma lovers like Marto

Try running a plasma in a room with sunlight coming in - you wont be able to see the picture on the screen.

That's why they have the plasmas in dark corners of the stores and in special cabinets….

Having said that I would prefer 200hz motionflow in a tv of this size….

I wish people still had Samsung UA55C7000's because at around $2100 at Xmas with bonus 22" and blu rays there were a steal…

        • @EUG
Why? You got 1 faulty unit so you make a decision that all plasma panels are no good and LCD wins hands down? What sought of gorilla logic is that?? Pfft… ????

        • Wow, you really need to tone down your plasma fanboyism. All display technologies have flaws. Plasma is no exception.

Perhaps you'd like to check out these two links.

          http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&biw=1037&bih=833&q=pla…

          http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&biw=1037&bih=906&q=pla…

Now, repeat the searches with "lcd" instead of "plasma" and you'll notice that the problems are inherent to plasma display technology.

Of course, you'll come up with some excuse like "that's what you get when you buy cheap plasmas. Get a Kuro or something" … but those problems don't happen on cheap LCDs.

It's OK to admit that a technology you're soulmates with has some flaws. Your choice isn't necessarily the best for everyone.

        • edit - wrong thread

      • -2

I never said Plasma didn't have flaws champ. I also stated clearly that LCD/LED are useful for specific needs. But the FACT remains, and any videophile will tell you the Plasma generally produces a more 'true' video experience. You make up all the BS stories you want about Vieras you've owned.. makes no difference. While your on Google, go and research Plasma V LCD/LED and learn about it.

Plasma is all-round the better technology for those who value image quality over anything else. Bottom line.

        • -1

I gave you an example of a flaw.

You pretended the flaws I mentioned did not exist. You said it was because my unit was faulty, even though the flaws I mentioned is inherent to the technology.

          That's fanboyism.

HIGH-END plasmas screens are good. But when you bring the price level down to what most people can afford, LCDs are better than plasmas. Flickering, buzzing, and dithering all come into play with "normal-priced" plasmas. Entry-level plasmas are the absolute worst with their 1024x768 non-square pixels, flickering, and washed-out colors.

But it's OK, I can tell you're the type of person who will never ever see things from another angle. I'm just more used to seeing that sort of behaviour when it comes to fruits and little robots. :)

        • So now you're using 1024x768 panels to try and somehow enhance your argument? A viera can be had in that resolution for under $500… try again champ, that has no relevance here. And washed out colours?? BWAHAHAH!! No clue at all! Plasma kills LCD for black level and contrast as a rule and LCD is often considered washed out, too sharp/bright/harsh. It's coming clear that YOU are an LCD fanboy. I own 2 LCDs(32inch) and 1 plasma.. yet I'm a plasma fanboy? You talk about pricing too?? Plasma is also cheaper as a rule. Name a plasma that out prices an equivalent LCD/LED? It seems you're one of these fools who payed 3.5k+ for 50inch(or so) Bravias in recent years and got their ar$e torn out with a rubbish motion blurred, artificially bright LCD.. you seem very bitter, well get over it.

Shying away from the FACT that Plasma as a technology outperforms LCD/LED? You're a joke. Accept it. I've said before that I agree Plasma isn't perfect yet you return to that same pathetic stance in the argument. You say I don't see this from more than one angle? I'm the only one of the 2 of us that has accepted both panel types are advantages in 'certain' circumstances(LCD - bright sun filled room). In any other circumstance, it's a big win for Plasma. Accept it muppet.

        • lol, it's like talking to a little kid.
Enjoy your plasma. You're right, it's way better than LCD in every way. :)

        • You often lose arguments to little kids then I assume… :-)

Way to pull out of this with sarcasm that doesn't even correspond to any of my posts. Fail… Dumba$$.

        • Yeah I do… for some reason these little kids are always right. It's like they invented technology. They always know everything and are never, ever wrong. They often end up just maturely throwing insults. Trying to explain anything to them is like talking to a brick wall. Usually once they grow up though, they start to see their silly ways. But not all the time. :)

Enjoy your plasma! Plasmas are the best. Nothing else even comes close.

        • The very fact that you keep replying so quickly shows how much this is getting to you… Humerus to say the least. :-D

And again you keep up the sarcasm, which is totally unfounded?? Childlike.

        • smiles at the exact reaction I expected to get

  • This 2010 released TV is now an archived (discontinued) model in the Sony website and the rrp is not shown. So we should expect a massive discount.

    http://www.sony.com.au/product/ProductComparisonWizard.actio…

  • A silly question. My couch and TV bench distant is only 3m. Does this TV view alright at that distance?
(rephrase: do I get the cinema effect or do I get cooked by the heat and radiation?)

    • I wouldn't go bigger than 50inch at that range.

  • I have bought this TV from their website. When I tried to order with my credit card it came up saying "Our website is down for scheduled maintenance" or it would time out. When I called them they said that my order went through 2-3 times, as I had tried 2-3 times. They were able to easily sort it out over the phone, but if anyone else has any problems ordering over the internet give them a call.

    • Hi Everyone – Was going to post this morning to let you all know what was going on but we’ve been proactively resolving the issues. Due to the massive spike it traffic last night there were instances where shoppers would see ‘System Maintenance’ – All orders actually came through and this was a front end issue only :). This only happened to a few customers and all issues have now been resolved. If you experience any problems please let me know, otherwise everything should be smooth sailing from here on in. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

    • my order went through 2-3 times

Hope you didn't get any overdraft fees due to that. An unexpected $4k wouldn't be welcomed by many.

Due to the massive spike it traffic last night

      "2050 clicks" - couldn't have been us. :D

  • My TV arrived Tuesday and so far, very happy with it.
