    • got the link for original thread that did this?

looks cool but missing RGB lights

Here it is. He's customised heaps of different models.

  • Options for turning this into a gaming rig?

    • +1

I don’t think it’s ideal for gaming in the SSF model. Most of the YouTube and whatever guides I’ve seen use the DT (desktop) or MT (mid tower) for gaming as you can fit a gtx1050ti or gtx1650 low profile graphics card. And even then there are still reports of heating issues thus fans going supersonic.

      • SSF model?

        • I meant SFF - small form factor

        • Super Street fighter!

        I don’t think it’s ideal for gaming

        Works fine for me.

      • I see, thanks, wasn't after any hardcore gaming though, just light stuff

      • +2

I have the 9010 SFF with a 1050ti LP and haven't run into any issues.

        • just built one for the nephew (with the 1050ti), and with the 1650 just being released and about 30% faster, you cant go wrong…

plays fortnite, just case 2 no problems at a high frame rate, (didnt have time to test much more) albe it not on high settings, but at medium settings i think its still getting 60fps…i7 3770.

        • I keep on getting black screen flickering on my Displayport (and DVI) monitor with a 1050ti LP and Optiplex 9010. Worse when playing youtube videos. I thought it was PSU power supply issue but it is fine when playing 3D stuff (!?!). Have even bought a replacement monitor and same thing :(

          • @bdl: Finally fixed this issue. Nvidia Control Panel -> 3D Settings -> Manage 3D Settings -> "Power Management mode" … change to "Prefer maximum performance". Seems like the SFF PSU can't supply enough power when the 1050ti switches to low power mode.

    • add a graphics card the low profile 1650 for 279, add an ASUS PCE-AC58BT for a bluetooth headset and wireless, and away you go.
16GB of RAM would also help…

240+279+~79=600, still better than anything you could buy new. (and thats if you want the wireless and bluetooth)

      • Not strictly true. Have a look at the Tech Fast deals that pop up on here all the time. Recently had a Ryzen 2600 + rx570 deal for $579 delivered and ryzen 3600 + rx570 for $699 delivered. I know what I'd go with for that price.

Not saying these are a bad proposition but depends if you can get cheap second hand parts etc.

        • No windows :(

          • @bazingaa: If you know where to look you can get windows very cheaply.

            • @combatant: not genuine retail (or even OEM) windows… IE legitimate, the dells usually have a license key with them.

thats true, I keep looking at intel boxes and nvidia cards, there are some decent AMD, but your forgetting apples to apples, the amd wouldn't have wifi and bluetooth, so you could take 79 off the dell, so realistically closer to 500….vs close to 700 which is about 40% more… then when you add on a legitimate windows license…

(not talking VLK or visual msdn license either that you can get for 10 bux on ebay)

              • @wisc:

                • sorry i was comparing the Ryzen 3600 though, the 2600 is pretty damn good value… still 520 vs 579+ the cost of windows…

that said id go the amd.

the CPU is good enough, unless you are going to run some intensive CPU heavy AAA games
      https://www.techradar.com/reviews/pc-mac/pc-components/proce…

use an external GPU, the chasis looks like those low profile PCs your see at customer service centres, so it will not be able to fit a regular size graphics card

well, that's IF the motherboard even have the spare PCI-E port, because dell motherboards are proprietary

      • lol, yes they have PCI-E usually 2x and 1x 4x, the biggest issue for the dell is power and height…not worth it though, if your going to spend a couple hundred on an external GPU , might as well just put it into a decent new PC.

  • Where can I find the cheapest Office type PC that has 4GB of RAM and built in video card?

If no operating system makes it cheaper, then its better.

I am just looking for the absolute cheapest option for someone surfing the Internet and watching Kayo sports, Netflix, etc and typing stuff in Wordpad.

Will not be used for games at all.

      Facebook marketplace.

      • +1

+1 @Jv - not sure why you were negged but the Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree are your best options

        • +1

Sometimes you can get them for free !!!

        • they see him rollin' and they be Hatein' sometimes seeing JVs name is enough to make people neg!

new raspberry pi 4 with 4gb ram …… runs linux so no OS costs, $125 plus cost of monitor, keyboard and mouse.
hard to get at the moment, suppliers reckon back in stock end aug early sept and it’s very low power consumption, about 15w when running, less in standby so you can let it run 24x7 even if downloading torrents.

you can hook it up to the TV is on a budget which is even better for watching netflix ….

size of 2 cigarette packets stacked on top of each other, and gets regular software updates.

      • Can I put Windows on it?

        • +2

no. you can emulate it in a VM on top of a Linux distro, but it would be excruciatingly slow. Is there a particular reason you need Windows?

          • @xrailgun: Just that the people who will use the system are most familiar with Windows. They are for my parents and so they don't want to relearn anything new at this age.

            • +1

@ElCheapoo: You don't, I switch my grandparents to Linux. All they do is web browsing and some word doc. Browser(Firefox) doesn't change when you switch to linux (Linux Mint/PoP OS/Kubuntu/Manjaro).

            • +1

@ElCheapoo: should be able to fool them with one of these distros!

      • Been waiting to get my hands on one for ages. Wanted one to finally build a decent Nas on raspberry.

      • +3

Why wouldn’t you pay $100 and get this? More storage, performance, etc.

        • A variety of reasons. This one is not a bad choice at this price. But for $100 dollars more. I will get a pi4 and a good Nas drive then why not.

          • @nico8amy: Besides being smaller, a Pi is not as powerful as something like this.

            • @cnut: I doubt its power will give any noticeable difference in a Nas performance test.

    • +1

Sounds like you want an iPad. The energy savings of an iPad vs a mini tower over a few years will probably add up.

      • No, definitely not a tablet, iPad or notebook.
        I want a desktop system.

        • +1

Why not a notebook? You can plug a keyboard, mouse, and monitor into a notebook just like a desktop.

        • if it's 24x7 then a used notebook is worth a look. A good laptop idles around 8~10W and used ones can be picked up on eBay relatively cheap (go for Intel Gen 4 or later). Boot from SSD and pair it with a large external drive then you'll have plenty for general use.

A desktop will generally idle at least 30W if not 50W. Mostly due to power supply efficiency at low power draw.

To get similar low power draw as a laptop you'd need a NUC which is a bit more expensive.

All of this assumes no gaming capability.

    • Raspberry pi.

  • Thanks OP. I’ve been hanging out for a deal on a 9020 with i7 but for <$240 this was hard to beat so I took the plunge.

Also: one question. How is the 240gb ssd installed? In a tray in the 3.5mm spot? Is it a double tray in case I want to add a 2.5 regular hdd?

    • It is tapped down with double side tape between the side panel and internal case structure.

  • Is it shuckable to a new case?

    • +2

They are very shuckable with some caveats.

The power connector is not a standard atx type, but there are cheap adaptors available.

Also the fan connectors are not standard, they are a flat 5 pin connection. However they are still standard 4 pin pwm fans and there are adaptors available. The sff model has cpu fan and case fan, and you get bios errors if a fan is not connected to either.

The power and reset switches are also a bit tricky with small connectors. You might have to be good with a multimeter to tap some wiring if you want to replace those.

Finally the io shield on the rear of the case is not removable. You dont need one, but going into a new case will mean a big hole around the connectors if that bothers you.

Otherwise, the mb fits standard matx mounting points. Ive shucked one, put in a new atx case and turn it into an openmediavault nas. Works great!

  • Would this be good for plex server?

    • i5-4570 Passmark = 7150. So can do some minimal transcoding. Always easier to stick with Direct Play if connections allow.

      • If your plex plan user will use the gpu, but agree shouldn’t need to transcode

  • +3

eBay has similar for cheaper https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9020-SFF-Desktop-I…

The price differential will get you a much bigger SSD.

    • Now I'm torn between this and the above.
I wonder if there's any warranty offered as they're both refurbs.

    • all gone now.

  • Can these things be made silent?

    • Anything can be made silent with a pair of sidecutters!

    • That's very true, but the BIOS will probably bitch at me if I did that. I was thinking of removing the front fan and putting a low profile CPU cooler (possibly passive) this would be a low use home router

      • Low profile cooler set to only kick in at higher temperatures will get you close.

  • With this Dell Optiplex 9020, will I have any issues reformatting from scratch?

I mean, I've come across a few name brand PCs (HP, Dell, Lenovo, etc) where if I reformat, it doesn't detect the drives properly, or needs additional drivers on boot, had hidden recovery partitions, etc, to be able to install Windows from boot.

Does this Dell Optiplex 9020 have the same issue?

I've found that no brand PCs have no such issue, and all I've ever used is no-name PCs.

    • I've build a few 9010s no issues, id assume this would be much the same, drivers would be on the dell site if there is anything odd though.
