Plus bonus $100 for new HSBC customers

"$100 Bonus for new HSBC customers
$100 Bonus9 when you deposit $2,000 or more each month for 3 consecutive months, within 6 months of opening your Everyday Global Account."

  • Can't bother to open another account (besides ING) for this now.

    • 2%?

  • Just tried to apply for this and the submit button on their application form for existing customers does not work.

Either that, or I’ve just opened a few hundred accounts.

Second worst bank in Aus in my experience. Their sub standard online banking systems and app makes this 2% almost not worth it for the hassle.

    • I found my ad and cookie blockers stuffed things around but Microsoft Edge was ok. Pihole didn't affect anything.

    • Not working either for me in both Chrome AND Edge :(

    • I think I succeeded by using Chrome in Incognito mode (extensions don't apply there?).
It still wasn't a smooth signup experience for me though!

    • FYI, existing customer will not get $100 bonus. My friend is existing and told me that his relationship manager said so.

      • his relationship manager

        Uh havin an affair?

  • In my eagerness to take advantage of this offer, I opened my account on the 30th (as soon as OP posted about this offer) and missed the $100 bonus by two days. :'-(

    • You should still be OK provided you weren't an existing customer and you make the $2k x3 consecutive month deposits

    • From HSBC's website:

[9] The AUD100 bonus paid in AUD to new HSBC customers who open an HSBC Everyday Global Account before 31/03/20 and deposit AUD2,000 or more per month for three consecutive months within 6 months of opening the account.

    • +1

Should still be eligible? That offer doesn't list a start date.

  • Do they have Osko/PayID?

  • +1

Their fx rate is a joke, big rip-off, this so-called global product is BS with such a rip-off rate, you'd better use ING to withdrawal fund oversea.

  • So those who signed up, are you guys able to immediately add your debit card to Apple Pay (or Google Pay)?
    "Unable to Add Your Card"

I wonder if I have to wait until I receive the card and activate it before I can add it to Apple Pay.

I was hoping for an experience similar to UP Banking.

    • +1

You need to wait until you receive the card. Having said that, I signed up Tuesday night when I saw the original post and received my card yesterday. I transferred the $2000 at about 4:30PM yesterday and received the email last night telling me I would be eligible for the 2% cashback from now until September 30th since it is for the remainder of the current month and the following month. I had to call them to be able to verify the card when I added it into Google Pay.

  • Has anyone done the calculations to determine whether it's better to use amex card (or another card) to get points to buy gift cards or if it's worth getting 2% back?

    • For WISH gift cards I get 5% off and 3ppd on my AMEX Platinum Edge, which convert to 1.5ppd when I send them to Velocity since April 2019. If I use the HSBC card I can't get the 5% off as it is only on Paywave, Google Pay and Apple Pay transactions that you get the 2% cashback.

For Coles gift cards I get 5% off and 2ppd on my Coles Rewards Mastercard, which convert to around 1ppd (during the 15% bonus Velocity transfer periods) when I send them to Velocity. If I use the HSBC card I can't get the 5% off as it is only on Paywave, Google Pay and Apple Pay transactions that you get the 2% cashback..

      • Not concerned about the buying of the gift cards, more just saying if o had a small purchase, should I use this to get 2% or use my AMEX card to get the points to buy gift card or flights later.

        • +2

In my eyes 2% is better value than accruing points. I value my frequent flyer points at 1c per point, ie. 1%. But for someone redeeming first and business class flights and upgrades they'd value them higher.

        • +1

          This 2% is instant cashback
          Amex cards
Can only get 1 airline point (2 amex points, Flexible program transfer) via amex explorer
Or 1.25 Qantas points via Qantas amex

You can get 1.5 airline points (3 amex pt via amex plat edge) via Woolies or coles, and also use it to purchase gift cards.

For supermarket spends, I'd stick to discounted gift cards purchased with amex.

For everything else, use the HSBC 2% cashback

  • Is the verification/ setup process simple or tedious?

    • +3

Teddious. they want to know your chickens first high school and your favorite cars date of birth.

Activating Apple Pay requires a call to HSBC. I've been listening to generic on hold music for the last 7 minutes, and am reminded of the lengths i'd go to for free money.

    • omg. i just received my card and was about to happily add to apple wallet.

    • +1

I received my card Friday, I loaded it on Apple Pay from their mobile app? There’s a slot there and I just clicked. Just need to activate first tho, but haven’t spoken to anyone.

  • +1

Has everyone received an email after depositing $2k confirming that the 2% cashback has been unlocked? I haven't received the notification…

    • I deposited the $2000 on the 1st of August and the confirmation email came at 8am the next day.

      • when did you open your account?

        • +1

          Back in April or May.

  • +2

Used Apple Pay today. Cash back is instantaneous.

  • The app and website are complete sh*t but I at least have the 2% functional now. Looks like a promising offer.

  • +1

HSBC mobile app is pure rubbish.
I tried to bank with them and closed all account because of crap app and site experience only. Even despite convenience of multicurrency account. It just doesn't worth my nerves dealing with stone age technology wrapped in absolute paranoia.

  • Which atm can i use to withdraw money for free?? Is it just hsbcs atm??

    Regards

  • Can't add the card to Google Pay. Called HSBC which then asked me to contact Google, who directed me back to HSBC… Smh

    • Was on the phone with them for 40+ minutes, apparently their Google Pay provisioning system has been broken since yesterday & there's nothing to do except to wait…

  • Setup was a bit annoying but the cashback is coming in while we wait for the $100 bonus. Hopefully they don't end the 2% cashback in a ridiculously short time (I can't see an end date).

    • If they do I'll close the account and go back to what I was doing before (and have one less card and an easier set of rules for the wife of which card to use when - which will make her happy). Until then, make hay while the sun shines.

    Experience

    • Existing customer
    • Applied online on Tuesday 20/8 and was approved straightaway and got provided with BSB and account number.
    • Got SMS on Wednesday 21/8 morning advising the debit card is on its way.
    • Debit card arrived yesterday.
    • Transferred $2000 from another HSBC account under my name last night.
    • Received email from HSBC at 8:02 this morning advising that I have unlocked the benefits of HSBC Everyday Extras.

    Questions:

    1. Does anyone know how often they do the sweep to check for the $2k deposit? Daily? Trying to minimise the time the $2000 sits in this zero interest bearing account.

    2. The email from HSBC states "HSBC Everyday Extras is a feature of the HSBC Everyday Global Account. To continue to be eligible to receive Everyday Extras you will need to deposit AUD2,000 or more into your HSBC Everyday Global Account before the last day of each calendar month.".
Does that mean one can tap and pay for the first 27/29/30 days of the month, only to deposit $2000 into his/her Everyday Global Account on the last (working) day of the month and still earn 2% cashback?

    Thank you!

    • +1

Based on their Disclosure Statement, this 2% Cashback offers:

applies from the moment the deposit is made until the last
Banking Day of the calendar month, as well as the following
      calendar month;

Essentially, it means you can deposit the $2000 anytime during the month, if you have also done so from the previous month - and still have uninterrupted 2% cashback.

There is no stipulation how long the $2K must remain in the account, so it should be OK to withdraw immediately after it hits the account.

      • Cheers, withdrew most of it today, leaving a few hundred in it for the weekend.

  • Well I have to say forever in my life, I couldn't open a bank account, and that is with HSBC. It's not because of eligibility, it's because the rude and arrogant attitude of HSBC employees towards new customers. Here is the story. My mum was trying to open this global currency account with HSBC. We did online application and all went well except need to go to Canberra branch to verify her identity. We went there with all supporting documents and expect it is a simple and quick turn around, but HSBC Canberra branch employee completely pissed us off and shocked us that opening a bank account could be that complicated and difficult. The lady serving us was not verifying my mum's identity but rather telling us something we already know from the web (like this fee that fee, interest rate blah blah blah) and also asked a lot of questions which are stupid. For example, why my mum wants multiple foreign currencies in the global currency account? I reminded her please verify the identity and those information we already know and my mum has the right to open up to 10 foreign currencies in that account so please speed up the process. The lady said to us every customer wanted to open account with HSBC has to stay there and listen to her for minimum an hour. I said to her, fine but please hurry up a bit as I do have to go to work and can't stay that long. Then she refused to serve us and said if we want to open the account, we have to make another appointment. Then she walked away and left us with her branch manager. I talked to HSBC Canberra branch manager but that lady is even more rude and asked us to leave. I was shocked HSBC employees could treat new customer like that. Such thing never happened in other banks. I have to say, HSBC, look at how empty in your Canberra branch. If that is your service standard, how could new customer come?

    • Wall of text crits you for everything.

      You have died.

      • -1

        vagayjay used Textwall.
        It's super effective !

    • you're quite rude and arrogant yourself.

      • +2

They believe customer service enjoys asking "stupid questions". It's not like banks have any protocol or processes to follow. Telling customer service to hurry up definitely makes them work faster.

  • "… when you tap and pay using Visa payWave, Apple Pay or Google Pay™ for eligible purchases under AUD100."

Sounds like the only requirement is (1) under $100 and (2) via Visa payWave, Apple Pay or Google Play. Right?

Technically speaking, this should include any in-app purchases through Deliveroo where the app accepts Apple Pay … and my dinner is under $100?

    • Looks like no.
It seems like HSBC can tell what's contactless/in-store Apple Pay vs in-app Apple Pay

  • I just closed my ing account and informed them that HSBC is providing the 2% cashback. The lady hinted, that ING will come back with similar offer very soon.

    • CBA is offering 10$ cashback on their credit card. How about a 5% ING? Just like old times back when you used to be good?

    • +1

It's been over a month and ING have not responded. Their platinum credit card has 1% cashback (up to $30 per month) but attracts a $149 annual fee - lol.

      • yeah really lol.

        • I really would like ING to step up. Save some coin on the Izla ads.

  • I finally got my HSBC card after a really frustrating sign up process. I'm an existing HSBC credit card customer, so naturally wanted to sign up as an existing customer.

    • I first had to get the app loaded on my phone to generate a security key. This required a 30 minute phone call to get it activated.
    • Then I went through the sign up form, put all my details in (why does HSBC want to know your entire life history, it's a debit card FFS) and… the button to submit the application didn't work. I put my details in again, this time using my PC. Nope, no go. Then I read on this forum the system was broken months ago, and is STILL broken.
    • I had to sign up as a new customer (enter all details in again, sigh) and this time it worked, and HSBC linked the debit card to my existing log in details.

HSBC: Your IT system is almost completely broken. Years ago you forced all existing credit card customers to set up a new online banking login, as the existing credit card login no longer worked. Now you have a system that has a password but doesn't enable all features once logged in. A security key needs to be generated on a phone for every login (which requires another password).

  • +1

    Just my 2c.
Signed up to HSBC for the bonus and to consider using it permanently. No, just no. Sign up process, activation and setting up the app and online were so frustrating. The app itself, is just terrible compared to other banks.
Only good thing I can say is that they came through on the bonus. In Oct, Nov & this morning, I transferred $2000 in from Up Bank at around 12-2am in the morning. The money usually appeared in HSBC at around 2pm that day, then I transferred the money straight back to Up, where it showed up at around 8pm. Only difference is that today, the $100 bonus appeared when the $2000 did.

Unless they get PayID/Osko for permanent transfers, I won't be continuing to use the account as I don't want my money sitting in their bank.

    • I use "Beem It" to achieve instant transfer, $1000 daily limit. The trick only requires you always leave about 5 cents on HSBC account to avoid failure.

  • Hi guys, since december i have not received my 2% cashback.. i have been receiving the 2% cashback for the last 3 months,..

Is this the same with youguys??

    Cheers

    • I am still receiving the 2% cashback - latest transaction came through yesterday.
Have you been depositing $2K each month?

      • Ah that must be it, i have forgotten to transfer the 2k. Last time i deposited 2k was on october. Thanks bluesky

        • +1

If you transfer it now, it takes effect as soon as it hits the account - so for the rest of Dec and next month, you will be able to enjoy the benefit.

        • Very sorry that you missed in November. Apart from no 2% cb, you may not get $100 bonus ?

  • +1

Has anyone’s 2% cashback stopped since the start on the new decade? Just all of a sudden I’ve stopped getting cashback on all purchases.

    • +1

All fine here (n=1 and transaction still pending, so cashback also pending).

Did you deposit $2000 last month?

      • Argh, yeah that’s what it was, fell just short on my transfers. The good news is I deposited again and the 2% activated again straight away, no need to wait until next month.

    • All good here

  • I already have active Hsbc accounts , But I have to admit defeat , I have tried Opera , firefox , edge and chrome in both normal and incognito modes with no success. how can it be so hard to open a account ?

  • Anyone shopped in Wesfarmer Group stores and did not get the 2% cashback as I heard Coles rerouted "Tap and Go transaction" to EFTPOS?

    https://7news.com.au/lifestyle/shopping/coles-secret-card-fe…

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7897683/Coles-shopp…

    • Not experienced, but I use android pay as much as possible rather than the physical card to avoid Least Cost Routing and getting processed on eftpos rails instead of Visa.

    • Ensure you use Apple Pay or Google Pay so that it's processed as a Visa transaction, rather than an eftpos one.

  • Any experience whether transferring money into the HSBC account via Been it (so it processes as an EFTPOS refund) counts towards the minimum monthly deposit?

  • With the $2k transfer, does it have to be lump sum (it doesn’t say so in t&c). Can I do 4 times of $500?

    • Correct, it just has to total at least $2K in the month.

      • Ta

  • New HSBC AU App was released. It seems easier to use. NPP/PayID may be available soon.

    • It's pretty much joint worst of all the Banking Apps along side Citibank. Awful

    • Thanks for the heads-up. A much improved app (although that wasn’t hard to beat) and it’s great seeing my savings from the cash back….it sure adds up over time!

  • Just got my bonus $100 immediately after my third $2000 transfer. Cheers OP!

  • No samsung pay meh
