Plunge

Was looking for a carplay headunit to replace my stock double din unit in my car. Has a front USB for ease of access. Is at $398 at the sca website, the coupon brings it down to $338.30.

Not the cheapest it has ever been but a decent discount to the usual $399 price it's been this year.

Price is for click and collect, delivery fee a little more.

  • How do you install these things

    • +2

You could get someone to do it for you, or you could buy a wiring harness that you just plug and play, which I think sca sells. Think it's made by aeropro. I would just splice the wires from the new headunit plugs onto the existing wires from the car, shouldn't need anything but a wire stripper and tape.

The aeropro harnesses make it easy. Depending on your car you might need a fascia kit as well. Took me about an hour to do mine (Xav-ax 5000 model) and I've never worked on cars before. I didn't grab a steering wheel control harness though, so I have to use the unit to skip/change volume. Might look into getting one (first world problem)

      • I always wanted to try to upgrade my car stereo - I think it's beyond me 😅

        • +1

In some cars it's a piece of piss. What's your car year/make/model/variant?

          • @PinzVidz: @PinzVidz: 2001 Hyundai accent. Is it easy? 🤔

            • +2

@DangerDave11: No go. That model Accent uses a single DIN chassis radio, no space for a double DIN, which the Sony is. If you plan on keeping the car, get a nice single DIN unit so you at least have hands-free and Bluetooth audio functionality. Alternatively, one or two manufacturers make a single DIN with fold out screen that has ACP/AA.

              • +1

@PinzVidz: You would need a single din unit with a pop out display. I think Alpine make one, but it might be carplay only.

              • @PinzVidz: How do you find this info, I wanna see if this is suitable for my car?

      • +1

I’m about to find out how hard it is. I bought all the aerpro harnesses though, although I have made it harder for myself by:
*Buying a wireless carplay unit which requires connecting to theVSS wire (might try if I can do the GPS antenna as a less risky substitute )
        *also buying a reverse camera
        *also buying a dash cam
These two cameras integrate with the Kenwood head unit to give you lane guidance, too close to the car in front, in front car departure warnings.

        • Depending on the vehicle, a lot of newer vehicles feed a speed signal to the radio to lockout certain functions when the vehicle is in motion. Alternatively, the speed signal can be picked up from the loom running into the instrument cluster.

          • @PinzVidz: Unfortunately not my car is a 2011 Mazda 3 SP20. So the stereo is fairly basic and straight forward but is Bose amplified so the harnesses cost a lot more.
On the upside it has a completely seperate GPS high up on the dash and I suspect there will be a speed sensor wire connected to that which I should be able to get at when I remove the original head unit. Otherwise I will have to take out the instrument panel to get at the VSS wire behind it.

          • @PinzVidz: I can confirm that I have one of these and it doesn't lockout anything once the initial warning message goes away.

            • @NotJohnAU: The wireless carplay message saying you must connect to the VSS wire or you will have to connect via USB?

  • Hello readers, can this head Unit be installed in Honda HRV 2019? I'm after a head Unit for my HRV and hoping advice from the community pls. Thanks

    • Don't you already have Apple CarPlay/Android Auto?!?

      • Unfortunately no :(

        • +1

Fair enough. Good ol' Honda cost-cutting. Have a look here for parts required. You'll need fascia, ISO to radio, ISO to factory plugs, camera retention, antenna adapter and a little bit of soldering/insulating.

          • +1

@PinzVidz: Mrs has the HRV its the worst infotainment known to man, its literally a piece of shit

    • According to aerpro, yes it will.
It must be one of the diminishing passenger vehicle models that still has a double din

That said, any model above the base LX has carplay and AA anyway.

      • No HR-V in AU has AA… such a shame… the stock head unit is easily one of the worst in market too.

        • 2019 ODYSSEY Vti-L has no AUX in, no AA, no Carplay.

        • HR-V Sport, EX and EX-L have AC and AA as of 2019. The base LX does not.

          • @entropysbane: New trims?

Currently vti vtis lx RS and luxury.

Literally bought a MY19 vtis 2 months back. AA was not offered across the range.

            • @[Deactivated]: I believe the new updates came through a few months ago. Just have a squiz at the Honda website.

    Thank you Entropysbane and PinzVidz

  • Hello readers, Can anyone recommend me someone in Sydney who can install this headunit in Honda HRV 2019?

  • Heh, there's an Aerpro fascia for my Accord which retains the dual climate control, but the controls are reversed because its made for LHD cars. So driver side controls passenger side climate… Wonder if a bit of soldering would solve that. Probably integrated into a single board.

  • +1

Just wait for them to claim it's out of stock and start refunding even though their website and stores still say they have stock!

    • that is exactly what happened to almost a year ago on the XAV-AX100

  • Can this support two Bluetooth devices?

  • +2

Shame this unit doesn't do Android auto.

    • Is there any reason Sony can't be updated to included Android Auto?

      • +1

Other Sony units have Android Auto, it's just this unit in particular does not, most likely because it's part of their low-end range.

  • looks like this is a 2018 refresh. anyone know, on average, how often sony updates their head units line up?

p.s. its a real shame their higher end ax3000/5000 gets rid of the volume knob…

    • Yeah, I'd buy the 3000 or 5000 right now if it kept the front mounted inputs and controls as this model. Sucks. This product even looks nicer, in my opinion, but sadly need Android Auto.

      • yeah. neither compromises are acceptable… so I'm waiting on their next refresh and hoping there's a suitable model then.

        • Welcome to 2019, soon every 'smart' device will be bezel-less and without physical buttons, it's only a matter a time so you're better off just accepting the change.

      • The 3000 has cotrols on the front, albeit via button not dials. Also 3000 has rear usb. You could run a USB extsnsion from the rear to a less obvious spot than right out of the head unit. This would be better than a cord hanging from your dash (in my oppinion anyways). I'm actually loking at the 3000 for a 2013 Hyundai i30 at the moment. I'm hoping the existing USB in the car will still work. Anyone know if I need a specific Aerpro wire to do this??

  • Can anyone recommend a cheap android auto head unit

  • anyone got any advise on installing this into a honda jazz 2007? thank you! i just really want the aux function lol

    • Go to the aerpro website, put your vehicle down and the xav-ax1000 headunit down and it will come up with harnesses that would suit your vehicle. Then purchase it at supercheap or repco or ebay etc. I did the same thing and ended up buying the app9sp4 harness from ebay for my Toyota.

  • How easy is it to replace the stereo in a 2011 Hyundai Imax?

I would like to keep the audio controls on the steering wheel but would really like a digital radio tuner as the analogue tuner in my van completely sucks ass.

  • personally I'd only bother to install a unit that did carplay and Android Auto.
