  • It seems from reviews online these are sub-par in sound quality, and noise-cancelling to the older Sony XM3 and Bose QC35II.
Only real positive of these is call quality, they have extra microphones which properly isolate your voice from the background, just like the new Bose NCH-700.

    • Yep more so an option for those that make calls regularly. Still reviewed quite well for sound, but none of these will ever have great sound stage.

      • I think we discussed the 85h’s in the past, but one more issue was it only supports one codec - SBC.
Of course this only tells part of the story (same deal with frequency response measurements).
SBC can sound great sometimes just a spin of the wheel really with Bluetooth standards (varies between source devices and headphones).

        • Yea true!

        • My boss bought pioneer s9, audiotechnica m50bt to compare for work headphones. We already had qc35ii and 1000xm3. We ran some highly subjective tests. I bought the m50bt straight away. Hopefully long term they will be good.

          • @onlinepred: Interesting. The m50x (wired version) failed to impress sound wise IMO.
Overall though AT may be making a solid product.
Could you give some feedback on the S9’s? Comfort / function / sound etc.

            • @thebadmachine: Comfort seemed high, good padding on headband and cushions with depth. Sound was imo better (for rock) than the AT m50x, but they were very bulky and I wasn't a can of the huge cups. The difference in sound wasn't enough to convince me to put up with the design. Didn't test functionality too much, just straight listened to music. The s9i sounded much better plugged in than wireless.

              • @onlinepred: Thanks for sharing. I guess for someone looking for ANC as a feature would lean towards the Pioneer’s.
By huge cups I assume you mean they were deep and roomy, I actually prefer that.
I think most headphones sound better wired, especially when you use a decent dac/amp. Pioneer S9 has Apt-X HD codec, the price is back up to $279 now though so it’s too expensive.

                • @thebadmachine: The design of the cups were huge is what I meant, definitely roomier than m50bt, the quality and build were no where near as sturdy as the m50 and also didn't fold flat or up for travel etc. Yep I can't stand NC, makes me feel ill. Also factor in 24 he's battery life for pioneer vs 40+ for m50xbt, and m50xbt has by 5.0 with extended range and connection stability protocol confirmed, while pioneer has by 4.2.

                  • @onlinepred: Goes to show there is a lot to consider for headphones.
S9’s 27 hours (NC off) is quite short as well (in JB’s description they say battery-life is 12 hours they gotta fix that).
Well it sounds like you found your ideal pair.
Thanks again for feedback on the S9.

                    • @thebadmachine: Time will tell, I thought that the Sennheiser 4.40bt was going to be great too….

I think the 45mm driver in the m50xbt also made a difference. Requires more juice, but the s9i has a 40mm driver. Also the mic on both are terrible. So bad.

                      • @onlinepred: Thought I’d give you a heads up https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/476053

                        • @thebadmachine: Haha everyone rates them so highly! Nice find. The sub 20hrs battery life kills it for me 😭 and not a fan of the design, what about you?

                          • @onlinepred: I just added notes to the description. There are minor differences depending on colours.
From my part, it’s a pass. Prefer listening to speakers anyhow.

                            • @thebadmachine: Yea closed back headphones pale in comparison.

                              • @onlinepred: I actually prefer closed-back Headphones. From my part that isolation is part of the experience.
For me it’s just a courtesy thing, I use them when speakers may disturb others.
                                I always still prefer speakers.

                              • @onlinepred: Just thought to add, I can appreciate semi-open. Still prefer closed-back but can stretch to semi-open if it is a good product.

                                • @thebadmachine: Hahaha. I got an old stereo system my old man gave me, it's huge. Tube amp. Floor speakers. When I sit at the right spot, the soundstage is incredible. It's the one thing I miss deeply from closed headphones and earbuds. They offer the best experience for commuting and office, so that's why I want a pair hehe.

Seems $350 is becoming standard price for any headphones that are even a tad better than the $50 ones. I would be careful buying anything without company reputation & reviews.

Jabra has made some great headphones in the past. Which $50 are as good?
