I was thinking of getting the Sony WH-1000MX3's that everyone is raving about, but now this comes up.. very tempted

Anyone have any comparisons between the two? (except that its missing ANC, butI dont care much for it)

    • +3

Do some quick research. When those who know about these come by they will be gone (assuming they think the deal is good enough).
Sound quality wise the XM3’s are significantly poorer, they will sound like Bose speakers vs proper speakers compared to V-Moda.
XM3’s are ANC Headphones, these are Mid-Fi bordering on Hi-Fi (when wired with proper source).

I have both the Sony WH-1000MX3's and the V-Moda M100s.

I do a lot of commuting and the Sony noise cancelling is a game changer ever since I bought those. Cannot travel without them anymore.

But boy I miss my M100s, I have had them since 2014 and they are still going strong and I love their sound signature. Sound quality wise and durability, no question about it the V-Modas win. I always use them at home.

Only reason I haven't purchased these yet is that they tweaked the sound signature so its not as bass heavy anymore which is a shame because I already have good neutral headphones and I want the fun sound signature of the M100s

      • Thanks for sharing your experiences.
I was aware of the thundering bass of the earlier V-Moda’s, I omitted that from the description in-case these newer models were different in sound-signature.
I think the more balanced sound will appeal to a wider audience, as music & sound preferences can vary. I still expect solid sub-bass from the Crossfade Wireless 2’s according to their frequency response.

    Yeah v Moda is good….

Are these good for planes - noise-cancelling?

    • Nope. Get the Bose qc35 or Sony xm3'a for that.

    • If you want good noise cancelling look elsewhere, these are if you like high quality audio, or if your really care about audio quality.

Ive had vmoda m80s since 2012, they still going strong, except the earpads need replacing.

  • Why does no one talk about the sennheiser momentum over ears in these posts.. They sound better than bose and sony

    • -1

What about in ANC. Is it on par or better than the Sony or Bose?

      • These headphones are more focused on audio quality than anc.

        • But that's the thing. Of course people want the best sound and the best anc and the cheapest price.

Since that's not possible. Consumers compromise.

Just like why I chose Bose over the Sony. Because if Sony can switch between devices and it's mic is better. They can take my money. My compromise is the bose doesn't sound as good as the sony but it's my compromise.

          TL;DR

People choose or prefer Sony or Bose over sennheiser because of people's priority. They rate anc higher.

          • @xoom: Yep, if you want anc you are pretty limited by sound quality. Even more so if you want a good mic and connect to multiple devices. I would pick Jabra 85h over bose qc35 if you want multiple connections and mic quality as the mic on qc35ii and xm3 are so bad. There isn't a perfect set like you were getting to, if you want anc you compromise audio quality

    • On a technical level they don't sound better, and they have less ability when tuning. Their controls are some of the worst, and design is very specific. The Sony xm3 is great for tuning, but if you are after a specific sound and soundstage look elsewhere. Glad you enjoy the momentums, they aren't for everyone though and not are they better than the majority of cans out there for the price.

Lol at this guy talking about technical level for discerning how good headphones sound… Almost all. Professional reviews place momentums sound quality as superior to bose and Sony

        • I had 4.40, 4.50, and momentum 2 wireless. They are all based off the same hardware, including the 4.3 which I haven't tried. They all lack treble, they all are incredibly uncomfortable with the least padding possible on the headband, they exhibited exaggerated bass. The controls are the same on 4.4, 4.5 and momentum 2, so again you are paying a massive premium for crappy ANC and design, and the Anc is worse than my old qc34i by miles, especially on a bus or train. Whatfi rated them 5/5, I'm assuming this is what you are referring to? Their reviews are opinion based and not technical. My best advice is to look at the specifications and technical reviews rather than opinion. I am lucky enough to be in a workplace where my employer buys us headphones to use in the workplace, we have so many different kinds lying around it's great fun to compare.

Also if you didn't know, the momentum range is for casual listening. They are design over substance. Literally what they are designed for.
*HD = Open or closed headphones designed to deliver great and balanced audio quality.
*Momentum = Versatile and durable headphones for everyday casual use.
*MM = The travel series. Compact and noise isolating headphones to easily carry around on a flight.
*PXC = Also a travel and commuting series but with more full-size over-ear headphones.
*CXC = The in-ear and earbud variation of the travel series. Typically very portable and noise isolating.
