    and random salt is applied.

Too much salt is bad for you.

    • +2

      How salty of you, jv

    • +1

      Where is the pepper?

      • With the doctor.

        • +2

Random salt is applied, so different encryptions of the same file will produce different results.

File size will increase by exactly 32 bytes.

They have their own custom format which uses AES-256.

Thus, files encrypted by GoodSync are only decryptable by GoodSync software, same goes for the file and folder names.

    This actually works !!!

It's allowing me to do things with onedrive accounts that I can't get working using Microsoft's tools…

    Thanks BA…

    • +2

      Like what?

      • +1

Backing up his porn to OneDrive

But all jokes aside, this was the only thing that works well syncing backups correctly.

      • +1

Like accessing and copying files between different onedrive accounts without sharing the folders.

        • Oh right, so if you have multiple onedrive accounts this helps. Why are you backing up files to multiple accounts??

          • -2

@onlinepred: I'm not backing up files. I'm copying them.

            • @jv: Copying them between accounts?

              • @onlinepred: Between different folders in different onedrive accounts.

                • @jv: Why?

                  • @onlinepred: Because I need a copy of those files.

                    • +1

@jv: Since you are doing a terrible job at explaining your use case for this, I will leave this here.

Since you are doing a terrible job at explaining

I guess if you don't understand what 'copying files between folders' means, you should leave this here…

                        • @jv: Oh that makes sense, you need a product to copy files in folders. Cool….

                          • @onlinepred: Yes, but between different one drive accounts which can't be done without a third party tool.

                            • @jv: But why would someone want to do this - between multiple accounts

Because they need the files copied to a different folder in a different account.

                                    @onlinepred: They don't.

The accounts belong to different people.

@onlinepred: Because they are different people and they don't want to share one account.

                                        • @jv: why do the people want to be different?

@jv: So why do you need GoodSync if it's in your DNA?

                                                  • +1

@onlinepred: That's exactly why GoodSync is needed.

@jv: Because you need to backup your DNA. We got there in the end

No need. I already have clones.

@jv: …wtf is going on here

                                                        • @jv: But are the clones replicated to an off-site universe?

  • Is this any better than InSync?

    • isn't that only for Google drive?

      • Correct, so I should rephrase, how does this compare for Google Drive functionality.

  • +1

    Rclone. That's all.

  • Is there a solution for similar but running from a Synology NAS rather than a desktop?

    • I assume Synology is Linux? Rsync?

      • Thanks. I will have a look and see if there is a package available for installation.

        • Be very careful with it. It’s command line and could wipe your files if you get it wrong.

      • Thanks, will take a look.

    • There is a GoodSync package for Synology - I'm running it after I picked up a free copy of the client in the last deal, and liked it. Supports local and remote connections, so you can backup to your NAS from offsite or onsite. If the backup destination is only written to by Goodsync you can radically improve performance by not doing a full compare for each sync, which is nice.

I've been happy with Goodsync. I've tried a number of backup / sync clients over the last few years since Crashplan killed their home product. FreeFileSync, Cloudberry Backup. The former is pretty good, but limited only to local / SMB / FTP. The latter supports a number of cloud services, but it's clunky and CPU intensive by comparison.

Does anyone know of a clean means to browse the history to retrieve a given version of a file? I'm currently versioning by other means, but would like to understand how this works, and docs are pretty light-on for detail.

      • Thanks. Do you have a link to the package by chance (assuming its not a native offering and needs a 3rd party community repo)?

        • The package is from GoodSync themselves.

          https://www.goodsync.com/for-nas-synology

Unless you purchase and assign a licence to it, it runs in a cutdown fashion (maybe with a storage limit). OK for try-before-you-buy at least. I paid about $50 AUD for it.

The free client giveaway (ie this offer) is a pretty crafty one; it's one free client per account, but there's no percentage in signing up more than once to claim multiple clients, as you need to have the clients on the same account to communicate with other registered services on the account (not an issue if SMB or FTP are the only protocols you want to use).

That said, there is a 'merge accounts' feature in the admin ui, so maybe it's possible to sidestep the limitation.

  • Just a note 1 license per computer

Which i found a bit weird haha If I am using 2 laptops and wanting to sync files between them

    • you can get the portable licence version.

      • thanks ill take a look

The support staff said 1 license per computer only

        • they have a usb version, but check that it has all the features you need.

          • @jv: I checked the sharewareonsale.com site but could not find the usb version? Where do i download the portable one?

            • @jeeg: You need to pay for it on the Goodsync site.

              • @jv: Ahh ok. I misunderstood. So we cant'd download the portable version from the Goodsync site and then use the registration code from this sharewareonesale link to register?

                • @jeeg: I don't think so, but nothing's stopping you from trying…

                  • @jv: cheers mate

    • Just grab another using a different email address for the other ones.

  • +1

Can it back up non-financial documents?

    • No, it only backs up financials

  • It was $29.95, not it has increased the price ?

  • Wishful thinking but is this the Server OS version?

I have been using an older version of Goodsync on Win Server 2012 for years and it's great.

    • I doubt it.
